Read previewAn uptick in disciplinary actions during Emma Tucker's reign at The Wall Street Journal has unnerved the newsroom, and now a former Journal reporter has filed a lawsuit challenging them. The lawsuit, filed by Stephanie Armour, alleges that she was fraudulently targeted for dismissal starting in April 2024 despite excelling in her job. Some said they saw the moves as a way to get rid of high-earning employees who are protected from being fired without cause by Journal publisher Dow Jones' union, IAPE. It was formed after Rupert Murdoch's acquisition of Dow Jones in 2007 to allay concerns of Dow Jones' longtime former owners, the Bancroft family. Dow Jones and editorial leadership haven't immediately responded to requests for comment from Business Insider.

GE stock has been on a tear, outperforming the market over the past year, as investors bet that the company's break-up will unlock still more value. Since the health-care spinoff, GE shares have risen above $170 from the $60s. He expects anyone buying GE Vernova shares in April will get "a 50% move over the next fourteen months." GE's aerospace business benefits from a dominant market position where it leads in both widebody and narrowbody jet engines. Still, GE Vernova was a weak spot for the company since 2015, according to analysts.

Jane Garrett, who as an editor at the Alfred A. Knopf publishing house guided seven books to Pulitzer Prizes for history but watched another book lose its prestigious Bancroft Prize over scholars’ criticism of the author’s research, died on Oct. 12 at her home in Middlebury, Vt. She was 88. Ms. Garrett worked at Knopf for 44 years, initially as an editor and special assistant to Alfred Knopf himself, who had a strong devotion to publishing history books. At first she steered his projects to completion, but she soon began acquiring books on her own. In 1973, “People of Paradox: An Inquiry Concerning the History of American Civilization,” by Michael Kammen, became the first of the books edited by Ms. Garrett to win a Pulitzer. Ms. Garrett was at a book party in Boston when she met Alan Taylor, who was starting to work on a book about William Cooper, the founder of Cooperstown, N.Y., and the father of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In the US, prosecutors are given enormous power to apply the law as they see fit, choosing who to charge and what to charge them with. Evidence of their misdeeds can secure convictions and allow for strict sentences that otherwise couldn’t be imposed. Bill Bramhall/Tribune Content AgencyThe 97-page indictment unveiled by Willis last week cites a lot more evidence than could be arrayed against a sandwich served at lunch. “We are the chief law enforcement officers in each jurisdiction, with the weighty power to deprive others of their freedom,” Aronberg observed.

Greater stability will boost Australian hopes, says Labuschagne

June 3 (Reuters) - Batsman Marnus Labuschagne believes Australia will benefit from increased stability in their Ashes squad as they prepare to face England in the first test of the series later this month. "In 2019, we weren't as set on the team and there was probably a lot more questions about people coming back in," Labuschagne said. "That was Steve, Dave and Cameron's first entry back into test cricket, there wasn't that much stability, even with our bowlers. He helped the Australians retain the Ashes before playing a prominent role in the 4-0 series victory over the English in Australia in 2021/22. I really feel like we let one slip last time we were here, and hopefully we can amend that."

The Roy children’s individual ambitions are sometimes risible, but we’re never asked to question why they would be ambitious in the first place. What’s not acceptable, within the moral logic of the show, is the ambition of those characters who were not born into money and power but want to achieve them. In an episode midway through the final season, Tom admits to Shiv that he cares about these things. I do.” He tells her, “If you think that’s shallow, why don’t you throw out all of your stuff for love? “You’re a hick,” she says, “your whole family is striving and parochial.” Striving — that’s the biggest insult of them all.
CNN —Taylor Swift fans have rallied in support of a fellow fan who was killed early Saturday after leaving Swift’s Houston concert. Jacob Lewis, 20, was hit and killed by a drunken driver after The Eras Tour show at NRG Stadium in Houston on Friday night. Karyn and Steve Lewis, Jacob’s parents, told CNN that the money donated will go toward a scholarship for theater students in the Katy, Texas, area. “If we could have him back that would be our choice but that’s not an option so we need to move forward and do what we can do to support others,” Steve told CNN. “We’ve gotten support from people who don’t even know us and now we’re able to honor him in a special way,” Steve said.
CNN —Think Dracula and the cape, the fangs and bloodlust come to mind. Nic Cage thought Dracula and saw Anne Bancroft in “The Graduate.”That’s according to Nicholas Hoult, who plays the titular servant to Dracula in “Renfield,” a new take on Bram Stoker’s characters. “I don’t think it gets more iconic than Nic Cage playing Dracula,” Hoult told CNN. Dracula is a character that requires an actor to go big or go home – and with good reason. “Nic Cage describes this idea of love in exile, and Dracula being someone who’s in extreme pain, because he has to watch everyone that he loves die,” said Hoult.
