AdvertisementFew cases win outrightBusiness Insider analyzed a sample of nearly 1,500 federal Eighth Amendment lawsuits — including every appeals court case with an opinion we could locate filed from 2018 to 2022 and citing the relevant precedent-setting Supreme Court cases and standards — and found that a settlement like Smith's was exceedingly rare. BI was able to identify just six cases that settled for $50,000 or more; half of those, including the England case, involved prisoner deaths. A New York prisoner won $2,000 for claims that he suffered debilitating pain while prison officials delayed treating his degenerative osteoarthritis. BI interviewed 10 attorneys who represented prisoners or their families in cases that prevailed; they all said the cases would have struggled to succeed without counsel. The underlying Eighth Amendment claim, he said, entailed abuse with the potential to infuriate even jurors sympathetic to law enforcement.

“DNA has been really extremely helpful for us, with the Rapid DNA,” said Alison Galloway, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of California-Santa Cruz, who helped identify remains during the Camp Fire. “If you don’t have that … then it’s a lot more difficult.”In general, forensic experts rely on DNA, dental analysis, fingerprints, medical hardware or circumstantial evidence to try to identify remains. “We’re still diligently working trying to make sure that we can identify (remains), and that’s why that DNA is so important, because we got fingerprints from three,” he said. Central Europe's rate setters were the quickest last year to begin raising rates and accelerated the pace this year as inflation surged, but some are starting to slow, or possibly end, tightening cycles. The National Bank of Hungary (NBH) raised its base rate by 100 basis points to 11.75% last month, but Virag has since raised the prospect of a halt to the bank's rate rise cycle, which totals more than 1,100 basis points since June 2021. Emerging markets, led by Latin America, powered 6% growth in global payments revenue last year, according to a brand new report from McKinsey. Consulting firm McKinsey & Company published its 2019 Global Payments Map report on Monday at the Sibos conference in London. It flagged strong growth in areas of global payments revenue, and drilled down into changes that legacy financial institutions may need to make to capture some of the broader space. Emerging markets driving revenue growthMcKinsey expects payments revenues to top $2.7 trillion by 2023. One key factor of growth here is the increase in electronic payments, especially in emerging markets, the report said.
