CNN —No food has entered northern Gaza since the start of October, putting 1 million people at risk of going hungry, the World Food Programme told CNN on Friday. In August, approximately 700 hundred aid trucks entered northern Gaza. No food trucks have entered northern Gaza in October, the WFP told CNN. Earlier this week, the UN’s OCHA said: “September saw the lowest volume of commercial and humanitarian supplies entering Gaza since at least March 2024.”Israel’s military launched a new ground operation in northern Gaza on October 6, after seeing signs of Hamas rebuilding. The military has issued fresh evacuation orders for residents in northern Gaza, adding it had expanded the scope of the “humanitarian area” in Al-Mawasi in the south.

☆ J.M. Smucker is buying Twinkies maker Hostess for $5.6 billion

New York CNN —Hostess, the maker of Twinkies and Ho Hos, is being purchased by J.M. Hostess stockholders will get $30 in cash along with .03002 shares of Smucker’s stock for each Hostess share they own, with the deal expected to close in 2024. Hostess was founded in 1919 and started making Twinkies in 1930. It filed for bankruptcy in January 2012, and stopped making its products, including Twinkies, in November of that year during a strike by Bakery Workers union. The firms of Apollo Global Management and C. Dean Metropoulos & Co. returned Twinkies to store shelves in July 2013 after acquiring the asset from Hostess.

Deli, auto center and bakery workers will continue to receive higher starting wages as they are higher-skilled roles, she added. The Wall Street Journal, which was the first to report the wage structure changes that went into effect in mid-July, said the changes mean paying some new store workers less than it would have three months ago, citing documents seen by the Journal and store workers. Walmart pays its employees different starting wages based on where the store is based. The new wage structure will not change Walmart's minimum hourly wage of $14 or result in any pay cuts for existing employees, the spokesperson said.
