My wife, four kids, and I have been to 33 states together including Hawaii, California, and Maine. Still, Oregon is our favorite state we've visited, and we recently spent eight days exploring it. To date, we've been to 33 states including famously scenic ones like Hawaii, Maine, California, and Montana — and we've found many things to love about each one. We appreciated the picturesque beaches and were happy to find them uncrowdedOur favorite Oregon beach was "Secret Beach." The Trail of Ten Falls at Silver Falls State Park was our favorite because its 7-mile loop took us to or behind 10 beautiful falls.

The wildfire shut down the main highway to Yosemite National Park as red flag fire warnings and high temperatures continue throughout the state. Wildfires are blazing across western U.S. and Canada, prompting thousands to evacuate, shutting down highways and fouling the air quality over several states. In the U.S., wildfires are raging in Oregon, California and Washington, illuminating skies with bright orange flames and haze. In California, the Apache fire sparked Tuesday evening near Highway 33 and Apache Canyon Road in Ventura County in the Los Padres National Forest. The blaze, estimated to be 250 acres, led the county to order evacuations for residences on Apache Canyon Road, local fire officials said.

Mr. Mawhinney, who served in Vietnam from May 1968 to March 1970, had 106 confirmed kills and another 216 probable kills, averaging about four a week — more than the average company, which comprised about 150 soldiers. As a sniper, Mr. Mawhinney filled a number of roles. He would stay up all night with his rifle and night scope, watching the perimeter of an encampment for incursions. He would go out on patrol with other Marines, ready to support them if a firefight broke out. But mostly he and his spotter, a novice sniper who helped him identify targets, went out alone, looking for individual targets to kill as a way of sapping enemy morale.

Fewer than half of rural hospitals now have maternity units, prompting government officials and families to scramble for answers. The closures have worsened so-called “maternity care deserts" — counties with no hospitals or birth centers that offer obstetric care and no OB providers. Ultimately, doctors and researchers say, having fewer hospital maternity units makes having babies less safe. “It feels like you’re held in a way.”Some states and communities are taking steps to create more freestanding birth centers. It was a novel and “innovative” idea to request federal nurses to boost staffing at a rural maternity unit, Wyden’s office said.

The deadliest Marine sniper by number of confirmed kills is Chuck Mawhinney. The Vietnam War was a brutal conflict that left many of the service members who survived it with invisible scars. In Vietnam, Mawhinney "figured he'd never make it home alive," according to "The Sniper," a new book by Jim Lindsay written with input from the marksman. "Chuck" Mawhinney poses with a replica of the M40 sniper rifle he used during the Vietnam War. Another author of a series of books on snipers, Peter Senich, was able to use his connections with the Marine Corps archives to access Mawhinney's kill sheets showing 103 confirmed kills, officially making him the deadliest Marine sniper.
