London CNN —Against the backdrop of a challenging economic outlook for many brands — big and small — the 40th anniversary of London Fashion Week last week was certainly a time for reflection. Even Carly Marks, founder of avant-garde New York label Puppets and Puppets, chose London this season. But all eyes were on Burberry, undoubtedly the biggest brand on the London Fashion Week schedule, yet one that has been battling against sharply declining profits. To see the best bits of London Fashion Week, keep scrolling. Talia ByreErdem Jason Lloyd EvansSophistication, elegance and femininity were key themes at TOVE's third show at London Fashion Week.

Waiheke Island, off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand, is a vacation spot for the rich and famous. Go to newsletter preferences Thanks for signing up! AdvertisementWaiheke Island, off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand, is known to attract a wealthy crowd. In 2017, Vogue journalist Amy Louise Bailey coined Waiheke Island, the "Hamptons of New Zealand," and called it an "escape that is high-end but low-key." I was eager to see if Waiheke lived up to its Hamptons reputation, so on a trip to Auckland in 2022, I planned a two-night getaway to the island.

Earlier this year, Bailey promised to turn out $100 million and 5 million votes for Trump. Hoyos-López, Bailey's neighbor, had been recently orange-pilled, and was anxious to help out any way she could in getting Trump to Nashville. At the conference, Hoyos-López, Fabiano and Bailey worked to stage a second roundtable with Trump. To Fabiano, Bailey, and Hoyos-López, the stakes couldn't possibly be higher, as Democratic nominee Kamala Harris gains momentum in the polls. Less than a week after leaving Nashville, Fabiano, Hoyos-López and Bailey were back together closer to home to process all that had happened.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday declined to intervene in a long-shot lawsuit brought by Missouri attempting to block legal proceedings in former President Donald Trump's hush money case in New York. Brandon Bell / Getty ImagesNew York Judge Juan Merchan issued an initial gag order in March ahead of Trump’s trial. Bailey took the rare step of trying to sue the state of New York before the Supreme Court, which has jurisdiction over disputes between states. It would have been highly unusual for the Supreme Court to allow a state to interfere with judicial proceedings in another state. Before the trial, Trump was fined for violating the original gag order, especially as it related to Cohen, one of the key witnesses.

CNN —Athing Mu’s hopes of defending her 800-meter title at the Paris Olympics ended in heartbreaking fashion on Monday as she fell to the floor at the US track and field trials. The trio of Nia Atkins, who won in a time of 1:57.36, Allie Wilson, and Juliette Whittaker completed the podium to make the Olympic team. Mu’s fall underlined the sometimes brutal nature of the US Olympic trials, which dictate that only the top three finishers will make the team for an individual event, regardless of an athlete’s pedigree and past results. Despite her lack of races due to a lingering hamstring issue, Mu appeared in good shape at the trials, winning her semifinal in a time of 1:58.84. “I don’t know if my season’s over yet,” Wilson told reporters on Monday.

London CNN —UK inflation plunged to its lowest level in two years in October, allowing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to declare victory on his pledge to halve the rate of price increases this year. Services inflation fell but remained high, at 6.6%. “The UK economy is still very much facing stagflation and, in our view, the road ahead will likely continue to be bumpy,” said Julien Lafargue, chief market strategist at Barclays Private Bank. Stagflation refers to a toxic mix of high inflation and low, or no, economic growth. There is also evidence that higher interest rates are placing an increasing strain on the economy.

London CNN —The Bank of England downgraded its forecasts for UK economic growth Thursday and kept interest rates unchanged, even as it warned that the Israel-Hamas war could push up energy prices and inflation won’t return to target for another two years. “There are increasing signs that higher interest rates are weighing on economic activity and we see that in weaker activity data and in a range of business surveys,” Governor Andrew Bailey told reporters. Inflation is still too high,” Bailey said, also pointing to the risk that the Israel-Hamas war could lift energy prices. “We will keep interest rates high enough for long enough to make sure we get inflation all the way back to the 2% target,” he added. Inflation still a concernThe Bank of England expects inflation to continue easing, but warned of risks to that outlook.

Three suspected Russian spies arrested in Britain - BBC
  + stars: | 2023-08-15 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The individuals are Bulgarian nationals, who were alleged to be working for Russian security services, the BBC said in its report, saying they had been held as part of a major national security investigation. The police declined to comment on whether they were suspected of being Russian spies. Britain has been sharpening its focus on external security threats and last month it passed a new national security law, aiming to deter espionage and foreign interference with updated tools and criminal provisions. Last year, Britain's domestic spy chief said more than 400 suspected Russian spies had been expelled from Europe. Britain has also been one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine since the Russian invasion last year and has imposed a range of sanctions on Russian officials and oligarchs.

Credibility crisis requires BoE to write new plot
  + stars: | 2023-06-20 | by ( Francesco Guerrera | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
LONDON, June 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Since May 24, thousands of British people have had their homeowning dreams dashed by a sudden spike in mortgage rates. Unlike many other central banks, the BoE doesn’t provide its own forecasts of how consumer prices will evolve in coming years. The whiplash occurred because traders had to digest the inflation shock without any interest rate guidance from policymakers. Because most banks price home loans off those derivatives, it sent mortgage rates rocketing. The BoE announces its latest interest rate decision on June 22, with traders expecting a 25-basis-point hike, to 4.75%.
