The holiday season seems to get real with the Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center in New York City every year. While it used to be taboo to take a phone out during a movie, the once-derided act has become commonplace in recent years. The release of the musical adaptation has once again renewed debate over movie theater etiquette. Social media has become a “part of our identity,” said Sara Cureton, an assistant professor at Colorado Technical University who teaches psychology and social media. But taking a phone out and posting a picture from the theater takes away from the shared experience audiences have watching a movie together. Forgue worked at a movie theater before and after the pandemic until June.

It was all feast and no famine at the Thanksgiving box office this year. "Moana 2" led the frame with $221 million for the five-day period, a significant overperformance compared to the $100 million box office analysts had initially expected. It is now the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation of all time at the domestic box office. This year's overperformance at the box office during the Thanksgiving period has also helped narrow the gap between 2024 and 2023's hauls. Heading into this holiday period, the 2024 box office was down 11% compared to the previous year's numbers.

On a chilly November evening, wearing a light leather jacket and a scarf, Auli’i Cravalho was freezing as she plunged through a pair of gleaming doors into a candlelit bar in Midtown Manhattan. “I do not know how people layer here — I’m in total awe,” said Cravalho, who had just come from a photo shoot at a park on the Lower East Side. Like the plucky young heroine she voices in Disney’s “Moana” films — the sequel, “Moana 2,” hits theaters on Wednesday — Cravalho grew up in a tropical climate, in Kohala, Hawaii. But recently she had been living in an apartment in Hell’s Kitchen, with her partner and her best friend, while starring in the Broadway revival of “Cabaret.” Cravalho plays the singer Sally Bowles in the John Kander and Fred Ebb musical about a Berlin nightclub during the rise of fascism. That night would be her first back in the show after sitting out a few performances after she “had come this close to vocal hemorrhaging.”

The "Wicked" movie is a revelation — and it's full of references to "The Wizard of Oz" and the original "Wicked" Broadway show that came before it. The problem for Apollo Bagels begins outside its cramped West Village corner storefront and ends, at peak hours, more than 100 feet down the block. That is the reach of a line of hungry customers who wait patiently outside the shop on weekend mornings and afternoons, seeking a taste of a chewy, crunchy bagel that has been ranked as one of the best in bagel-crazed New York City. On a recent Sunday, the line included Emma Richardson, 23, who lives in Paris and was capping a 10-day trip to New York with a visit to Apollo Bagels after an American friend told her she “had to go.”Galen Hughes, 31, who hunts down food that has gone viral in her spare time, had booked an early train from Philadelphia to squeeze in the wait before heading to a Broadway matinee.

She was bleary-eyed and overwhelmed, as mothers juggling an infant and toddler tend to be, when she started scrolling TikTok and stumbled upon the children’s personality known as Ms. Rachel. So I am genuinely surprised to report that the new movie “Wicked” melted me. A big-budget “Wicked” movie with a strong antifascist message? “The Wizard of Oz” was not part of my childhood, nor was musical theater. The perfect musical version of this for me prior to seeing “Wicked” was “Fun Home,” the wondrous Alison Bechdel graphic-memoir-turned-musical. Musical theater does seem to be an ideal medium for such reinterpretations, and this is a particularly impressive one.
