While it used to be taboo to take a phone out during a movie, the once-derided act has become commonplace in recent years. So I am genuinely surprised to report that the new movie “Wicked” melted me. A big-budget “Wicked” movie with a strong antifascist message? “The Wizard of Oz” was not part of my childhood, nor was musical theater. Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland showed their support for Michelle Williams on her big return to Broadway. Destiny’s Child reunited backstage Nov. 21 on the opening night of “Death Becomes Her” on Broadway, starring Williams as Viola Van Horn. On Saturday, Beyoncé shared a video montage on Instagram set to her song “II Most Wanted” featuring Miley Cyrus. “It is always great seeing Destiny’s Child together,” she wrote in part in the caption. “Gladiator II,” the sequel to the 2000 historical epic, also pulled in an estimated $55.5 million from more than 3,500 locations. With “Gladiator II” and “Wicked,” similar excitement had built up online for months, with many fans gearing up for what they deemed “Glicked” (pronounced glick-id). Similarly, “Gladiator II” and “Wicked” offered moviegoers the opportunity to lean into the contrasting themes. By comparison, Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is an action-packed film with swords, violent battles and ancient warfare. Still, “Glicked” didn’t quite replicate the magic of “Barbenheimer,” according to Shawn Robbins, founder of Box Office Theory and director of analytics at Fandango.

The box office was a popular destination this weekend as Universal's "Wicked" and Paramount's "Gladiator II" arrived in cinemas. "Wicked" is expected to snare $114 million during its domestic opening, the highest debut of a Broadway adaptation in cinematic history, according to Sunday estimates. Tracking projections for "Wicked" started around $80 million in late October, but rose to a range of $120 million to $140 million. Meanwhile, "Gladiator II" is expected to open with $55.5 million in ticket sales domestically, according to Sunday estimates. This is lower than box office expectations, which called for a haul between $60 million and $80 million.
