St. Olaf College boasted an 87.6% voter turnout rate in 2020, taking home the top prize in the All In Campus Democracy Challenge as the most civically engaged college campus in the country. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has reached a historic $880 million settlement over hundreds of child sex abuse claims. The agreement in principle announced Wednesday settles 1,354 child sexual abuse claims, the plaintiffs’ attorney said in a news release. It is the largest single child sex abuse settlement with a Catholic archdiocese. In 2007, the archdiocese settled child sex abuse lawsuits with 500 victims for $660 million. No designated donations to parishes or schools will be used to finance the settlement, the archdiocese said in a statement issued after the settlement announcement.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — When schools here reopen for the first time since Hurricane Helene unleashed a frightening deluge on western North Carolina, teachers won’t simply pick up where they left off in their lesson plans. The parents of a Massachusetts high school senior are suing his teacher, school district faculty members and a local school committee for punishments he received after he used artificial intelligence tools to research and create an outline for a history class essay. The lawsuit is one of the first of its kind in contesting school discipline over the use of AI to complete academic work. The complaint said the school’s AI policy was added to the Hingham High School student handbook only the year after the plaintiff’s son was punished. “It’s underregulated, especially in a school setting,” Peter Farrell, the family’s lawyer, said about AI in a phone interview. “AI is an output from a machine.”The student’s school district, Hingham Public Schools, said it was unable to provide further details during ongoing litigation and to respect the student’s privacy.

Amazon Web Services is investing over $500 million in nuclear power, announcing three projects from Virginia to Washington State. Amazon is the latest large tech company to buy into nuclear power to fuel the growing demands from data centers. An estimated 70% of the world’s internet traffic travels through Data Center Alley each day. “Small modular nuclear reactors will play a critical role in positioning Virginia as a leading nuclear innovation hub,” said Virginia Gov. “Amazon and X-energy are poised to define the future of advanced nuclear energy in the commercial marketplace,” said X-energy CEO J. Clay Sell.
