Buffett believes family wealth dynasties could have negative consequences such as eroding personal growth and complicating relationships. "I've never wished to create a dynasty or pursue any plan that extended beyond the children," Buffett wrote in a lengthy letter Monday. He has appointed three trustees of his charitable trust to potentially succeed his children in disbursing his wealth. They are also somewhat younger than my children," Buffett wrote. He said he's built strong trust in his children's managerial ability and philanthropic ambition through years of observation.

Profit also rose at the BNSF railroad, which shipped more consumer goods, and Berkshire Hathaway Energy, where operating expenses declined. It has now sold more than 600 million of the iPhone maker’s shares in 2024, though Apple remained Berkshire’s largest stock holding, at $69.9 billion. The sales comprised a large portion of the $36.1 billion of stock, including several billion dollars of Bank of America shares, that Berkshire sold in the quarter. Operating profit from Berkshire’s dozens of businesses fell to $10.09 billion, or about $7,019 per Class A share, from $10.76 billion a year earlier. This more than offset a near doubling of underwriting profit at Geico.

He added, "Votes of union workers in the United States against tentative agreements tend to reflect the white-hot anger of union employees against their employers. Tentative agreements are their only chance for them to express their frustration with their employer and their anger at the way they have been treated." A BNSF spokesperson said it is planning to attend the formal national labor negotiations even as it has announced nine tentative union agreements, five of which have already been ratified. It also has tentative agreements with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), SMART-TD, SMART-TD-YDM (Yardmasters Department), the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, and Iron Ship Builders (IBB). To date, Norfolk Southern has reached tentative agreements with 10 of its 13 unions, covering approximately 67% of its craft workforce.

Warren Buffett is the billionaire boss of one of America's biggest companies. Yet Berkshire Hathaway's website looks like it was built in the 1990s and hasn't been updated since. Top bosses at Berkshire Hathaway are usually tight-lipped about their market outlook, but recent investment actions from the executives are saying a lot. News broke earlier this week that Ajit Jain, the conglomerate's insurance chief for nearly 40 years, sold more than half of his Berkshire stake worth $139 million. That marked the biggest sale of Berkshire stock by the 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations since he was hired by Warren Buffett in 1986. He believes it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. But the magnitude of the sales could also suggest a bearish attitude toward the market and stock valuations.

Warren Buffett 's Berkshire Hathaway has a new Wall Street analyst covering its stock, and he has mixed feelings about the conglomerate. The analyst thinks Berkshire is grappling with weakness in its noninsurance businesses including railroad, utilities service and retail, while its insurance operations continue to outperform. "Berkshire Hathaway's old-school conglomerate structure has faced challenges in a number of key areas of late despite being powered by an insurance business that continues to shine," Kligerman said in a note. Berkshire's insurance business has been a bright spot for the conglomerate. Correction: Of the seven analysts covering Berkshire, three have a hold rating, according to CNBC's research.

The new issue for the global supply chain comes amid a rise in global demand, with shipments up 13% year-over-year in June. Air freight supply has increased, but only by 3% year-on-year, already causing higher costs for shippers due to the limited capacity, according to Xeneta. Thousands of flights were grounded or delayed at the world's largest air freight hubs in Europe, Asia and North America. "This is a reminder of how vulnerable our ocean and air supply chains are to IT failure." Ports, freight rails, report some issues, but normal operationsMost rails and ports were faring better after some early morning disruptions.

For Warren Buffett, his being born in America is the biggest contributing factor to his unmatched success. He believes the same promise that the nation has brought in the past also rings true today and will benefit generations of investors to come. The reverse is not true," Buffett said in his 2022 annual letter. Buffett has said that's a fact that should scream to ordinary investors: "Never bet against America." Once-obscure chipmaker Broadcom has enjoyed a record-setting rally that's pushed its market capitalization inches behind Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway conglomerate and its portfolio of household names and economic bellwethers. When Broadcom hit an all-time high earlier this week, its market capitalization briefly surpassed drug maker Eli Lilly's. As of Tuesday's close, Broadcom had a market cap of $839 billion, right behind Eli Lilly's $845 billion and Berkshire's $882 billion. Omaha-based Berkshire is currently No.7 in market value, after a cluster of megacap technology giants. Big AI beneficiary Broadcom, meanwhile, is seeing strong demand from customers in need of high-capacity chips that can power complex AI applications.

Warren Buffett's best return — on a percentage basis — was scored when he was starting out with little money seven decades ago. The Oracle of Omaha once vowed that he could easily produce a 50% annual return if he was only managing $1 million. "If I was running $1 million today, or $10 million for that matter, I'd be fully invested. At an early age, Buffett developed an extraordinary knack for picking cheap stocks, oftentimes troubled companies at deep discounts. You can't just be in love with the money, you've really got to just find it," he said.

But this year’s event will be the first without Munger, who died in November at age 99 — and comes amid growing questions about Berkshire post-Buffett, who’s 93. Buffett will have a different crew answering questions alongside him on Saturday. Berkshire’s vice chairmen, Greg Abel and Ajit Jain, will be on hand for much of the day. Shareholders most likely will be focused on what Abel, Buffett’s appointed successor as C.E.O. In Buffett’s annual letter to investors, he noted challenges to Berkshire’s biggest businesses, including the BNSF railroad (falling shipment volumes) and its utility business (forest fires).

"The impact of the Baltimore port stoppage on construction and contractor supply chains may be significant," said William George, director of research for ImportGenius. "For cargo already on water, we will omit the port, and will discharge cargo set for Baltimore, in nearby ports. COSCO announced Wednesday morning that its services would "be concluded" once the diverted container arrives at the alternate port. Out of the diverted ports, New York/New Jersey and Savannah, are included. One of the biggest concerns among logistics companies is availability of chassis for both truck and rail to handle the diverted cargo.

(AP) — Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has reiterated his concerns about railroad safety and scolded the industry for not doing more to improve since last year's fiery Ohio derailment. In a new letter to the freight railroads' main trade group, Buttigieg acknowledged that railroads say they are committed to safety. But he said too often regulators encounter resistance when trying to get the industry to do more to improve safety. And he said the Federal Railroad Administration's statistics don't show safety improving significantly over the past decade. But Buttigieg said that with two workers killed last year in rail yard accidents he's still concerned about those incidents.

Warren Buffett believes successful investing is like rolling a little snowball down a very long hill — the longer the hill, the bigger the snowball. The key is the power of compound interest , something Buffett often credits as the driving force behind his unmatched investment legacy. Compound interest describes the ability to earn not only interest on the principle but also reinvested interest on the interest. "The trick is to have a very long hill, which means either starting very young or living ... to be very old." For example, $10,000 with compound interest of 10% annually is worth almost $175,000 in 30 years, more than $450,000 in 40 years and $1.17 million in 50 years.

Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger at press conference during the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Meeting in Omaha, Nebraska, April 30, 2022. Berkshire Hathaway 's Warren Buffett said his sprawling conglomerate may only slightly outperform the average American company due to its sheer size and the lack of buying opportunities that could make an impact. The 93-year-old Buffett said Berkshire's group of diversified, quality businesses should provide "slightly better" performance than the average U.S. company, but anything more than that is unlikely. 'With our present mix of businesses, Berkshire should do a bit better than the average American corporation and, more important, should also operate with materially less risk of permanent loss of capital," Buffett said. "Anything beyond 'slightly better,' though, is wishful thinking."

Berkshire Hathaway, the conglomerate run for decades by Warren E. Buffett, recorded its highest-ever annual profit last year. But its chief executive found reason to blame government regulation for hurting the results of some of its biggest businesses. In his letter to investors that traditionally accompanies the annual report, Mr. Buffett also paid tribute to Charlie Munger, his longtime lieutenant and Berkshire’s vice chairman until his death in November at age 99. Berkshire also reported $37.4 billion in operating earnings, the financial metric that Mr. Buffett prefers because it excludes paper investment gains and losses, for the year, up 21 percent from 2022. (Investors often see Berkshire as a bellwether of the American economy, given the breadth of its business.)

Warren Buffett shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Charlie Munger, calling his business partner of 60 years the architect of today's Berkshire Hathaway . "In reality, Charlie was the 'architect' of the present Berkshire, and I acted as the 'general contractor' to carry out the day-by-day construction of his vision," Buffett wrote. In a way his relationship with me was part older brother, part loving father." With much back-sliding I subsequently followed his instructions," Buffett wrote in the letter. Though I have long been in charge of the construction crew; Charlie should forever be credited with being the architect," Buffett said.
