BMW CEO Oliver Zipse says a 2035 gasoline ban will hit the European auto industry. Zipse's warnings come amid fears in the auto industry of a Darwinistic price war with China. AdvertisementA "correction" of the planned 2035 gasoline vehicle ban, Zipse said, would help reduce European OEMs' reliance on China for batteries. This, Tavares said, is because automakers will have to continue to invest in both electric and gasoline vehicles, thus incurring higher costs. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius told attendees at the Berlin Global Dialogue conference on October 2 that the Western auto industry is fighting a "Darwinistic-like price war" with their Chinese rivals.

The company upped its ad spending to $6.4 million in 2023, The Wall Street Journal reported. Between bad press about the electric vehicles themselves and the chaotic whims of Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Tesla's stock value has dropped this year by nearly 30%. Tesla's sales have gotten so bad that the company has resorted to advertising — something Elon Musk famously said he can't stand. "I hate advertising," Musk posted on Twitter, now X, in 2019. Musk agreed to try advertising in May after the suggestion came up at a company shareholder meeting, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The company, founded by Russian-Swiss entrepreneur Anton Chirkunov, told CNBC it will offer rides in the United Arab Emirates city starting Wednesday, catering mainly to wealthy clients. "European families and entrepreneurs have been moving to Dubai in the last five years," Chirkunov told CNBC in an interview ahead of the launch. Wheely's platform is tailored more toward mass market usage, however, and Chirkunov thinks his platform has an opportunity to stand out. He compares the Wheely brand to the American Express Centurion and Platinum membership credit cards in terms of brand status. Wheely plans to expand its Middle East team and chauffeur network to over 1,000 in the next three to five years, the company told CNBC exclusively.

Market leader Tesla (TSLA.O) garnered headlines earlier this year saying it would cut rare earths from its next-generation EVs. China dominates the mining and processing of a group of 17 metals known as rare earths, though companies elsewhere are trying to loosen China's grip. Tesla's announcement on dropping rare earths "opened up buyers' eyes to the fact that you don't really need rare earths to make EV magnets," Niron CEO Jonathan Rowntree said.

"The backlash, like a boomerang, can be bigger than what one imagined," he said, referring to potential retaliation by China on European carmakers. While 90% of BMW cars sold in China are produced locally, some materials are shipped from Europe to China, Mertl said. China has condemned the EU investigation, which formally began on Thursday, as out of line with World Trade Organization rules and detrimental to the global growth of EV sales. Asked whether the premium carmaker was seeing dampened demand for EVs reported by Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) in recent weeks, Mertl said EV sales were rising and the company was on track to hit its goal of 15% fully-electric sales for the year. Some supply chain problems in logistics and transport persisted and could carry on for the next six months, he added.

BMW will make a multimillion pound investment in its electric Mini production in Britain, the business ministry said on Monday, a move which secures 4,000 jobs. Business minister Kemi Badenoch will visit a Mini plant in Oxford for the announcement of the investment, which the government said followed "extensive government engagement and support." The government did not give a figure for the announcement but said it would bring total investment into the automotive sector to over 6 billion pounds ($7.48 billion) in recent years. "BMW's investment is another shining example of how the UK is the best place to build cars of the future," British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement. It comes less than two months after India's Tata said it will invest 4 billion pounds in an EV battery plant in Britain to supply its Jaguar Land Rover factories — a move seen as vital for the UK car industry's continued survival in the electric age.

A BMW executive told Autocar magazine the company will be ending its $18-a-month heated seat subscription. That includes the roughly $18 monthly fee — or $180 annually — to activate heated seats, which come pre-installed in these cars. "We thought that we would provide an extra service to the customer by offering the chance to activate that later, but the user acceptance isn't that high," Nota told Autocar during the IAA Mobility conference in Munich. Despite scrapping the seat-warming charges, Nota told Autocar the company still plans to go ahead with charging for other features — like $20-a-month driving assistance software. Automakers Ford and General Motors set a target annual revenue of at least $20 billion from software services by 2030.

BMW's concept model i Vision Dee is unveiled during an event at the Auto Shanghai show, in Shanghai, China April 18, 2023. China's passenger vehicle sales fell for a second month in July, as discounts and government support measures failed to lure consumers wary of buying cars amid a sputtering economy and a prolonged slump in the housing market. BMW recently raised its 2023 outlook for group vehicle sales and said it expects solid growth, which is defined as anywhere between 5% and 9.9%. In 2022, vehicles sales had declined by 4.8% to around 2.4 million; in China, they were down 6.4% to 791,985. Mertl said that the phase-out of grants to boost electric vehicles in Germany would cause a temporary drop in demand.

Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG Oliver Zipse attends an event at the Auto Shanghai show, in Shanghai, China April 18, 2023. The Neue Klasse, to be launched in 2025, is at the heart of the carmaker's efforts to replicate past successes and catch up with EV pioneer Tesla (TSLA.O), which is also staging a return to the IAA this year. "We are very profitable with electric cars ... already today," Zipse told reporters, adding that the Neue Klasse - or New Class - would be "very profitable. Production of the new platform will start at the group's factory in Debrecen, Hungary, where BMW is investing 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) in new battery-making and assembly operations for the Neue Klasse. Development of the Neue Klasse is targeting to reduce battery pack costs by half and achieve 25% more range per kilowatt-hour, a key measure of efficiency, executives have said.

Playing into investors' intense interest in self-driving technology, many lidar startups went public via mergers with special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, over the last few years.

Most automakers sell cars with a traditional franchise model, while Tesla sells direct-to-consumer. Auto executives still don't think the Tesla sales model will catch on — despite some pretty substantial shifts in the auto retail space already taking place. Automaker demands put some dealers on the chopping blockBut it's been a huge debate in the industry as auto dealers are a strong lobbying force, so much so that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis banned direct-to-consumer car sales in the state, with the exception of Tesla and EV startups that never had franchised dealers. Kerrigan experts have suggested this might be one way auto manufacturers are attempting to push out their dealerships amid the EV transition.

The IRA includes a clause that automatically qualifies EV battery materials recycled in the U.S. as American-made for subsidies, regardless of their origin. That is important because it qualifies automakers using U.S.-recycled battery materials for EV production incentives. China handles virtually all EV battery recycling in a global market projected to grow from $11 billion in 2022 to $18 billion by 2028, according to research firm EMR. The volume of EV batteries available for recycling should grow over tenfold by 2030, said consultant Circular Energy Storage. In Europe, EV batteries are currently shredded into "black mass" that is shipped to China for recycling.
