Almudena Romero prints images onto living plants
  + stars: | 2024-07-22 | by ( Victoria Barauna | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
London CNN —Spanish artist Almudena Romero is known for creating artworks that use plants as her medium. Almudena Romero “The Pigment Change” series has a chapter called “Family Album,” in which Romero projects a negative onto live watercress, using the plants’ natural photosynthesis to create areas of light and dark. Almudena Romero This artwork, which was exhibited this year on International Women’s Day, is a tribute to a childhood friend. Almudena Romero Romero questions the long-term future of conventional photographic film, when the materials needed to produce it are limited. But for Romero, plants are much more than something to look after: they’re beings we can learn from.

A New York couple who bought their 16-year-old son a BMW were sentenced on Monday to three years of probation and 26 weeks of parenting classes after the teenager drove the car at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour, slammed into a truck and killed his passenger, a 14-year-old girl. The teenager, whose name has not been released because of his age, was arraigned last December on at least a dozen charges, including second-degree manslaughter and reckless endangerment of a child. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. He had a junior driver’s license, which prohibited him from driving unsupervised under any circumstances in New York City, when in May 2023 he crashed his red 2005 BMW 325i into the back of a parked UPS truck in the Springfield Gardens neighborhood of Queens, prosecutors said. The teenage driver survived the crash with minor injuries, but his passenger, Fortune Williams, a freshman at a Springfield Gardens high school, was thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors said.

Gigacasting is a form of die-casting — pouring materials like molten aluminum into large molds to form parts. For example, the front and rear portions of the early Model 3 chassis each contained more than 70 parts, according to Tesla. Reducing weight ultimately means more range for the customer, and substituting one large megacast for dozens of stamped parts reduces labor and boosts production, he said. Severinson views repair as a solvable challenge: "There is a solution to repairing also a casted rear floor," he said. Burns and Volk say that might be a sign that the company is hitting some technical limits.

Costfoto | Nurphoto | Getty ImagesBEIJING — New tariffs on Chinese electric cars aren't enough to help foreign automakers stay competitive, especially in the lucrative China market, according to consulting firm AlixPartners. While collaborations are "rational" to attain market share, Dyer said it is difficult to stay in the China market long-term if foreign carmakers don't switch things up. Last month, an analyst from the Bank of America said U.S. automakers based in Detroit should exit China "as soon as they possibly can" because they were at the losing end against China EV giants. New York CNN —Google owner Alphabet is in advanced discussions to buy fast-growing cybersecurity startup Wiz for roughly $23 billion, a person familiar with the matter confirmed to CNN. The workplace drama I'm now highly invested in is from the Mohawk Chevrolet dealership in Ballston Spa, New York. The three-person marketing team in charge of posting on social media would sometimes try to jump on a TikTok trend or some other kind of lighthearted fare. So far, nothing out of the ordinary for a car dealership, this one founded in 1919 with the slogan "We go out of our way to please you." But then, somehow, they made a masterpiece — a mockumentary about the dealership in the style of "The Office." But is a viral video from a local car dealership actually good for sales?

CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. This valuation, however, wouldn't be based on Tesla's success as an electric vehicle manufacturer, but rather as a robotics company. While Musk didn't provide a specific timeframe for this claim, he also suggested Tesla could reach a $5 trillion to $7 trillion valuation as a robotaxi company. In 2020, Tesla's worth even surpassed the combined value of Toyota, Volkswagen, Hyundai, GM, Ford and BMW.

Back in February, used electric vehicle prices dipped below used gasoline-powered vehicle prices for the first time ever, and the pricing cliff keeps getting steeper as car buyers reject any "premium" tag formerly associated with EVs. In June 2023, average used EV prices were over 25% higher than used gas car prices, but by May, used EVs were on average 8% lower than the average price for a used gasoline-powered car in U.S. Over the past year, gasoline-powered used vehicle prices have declined between 3-7%, while electric vehicle prices have decreased 30-39%. There are many more vehicles in the used market than new car market, and used vehicle value does rapidly depreciate as a rule. As more EVs enter the used market at lower prices, the EV market does become available to a wider market of potential first-time EV owners.

His attempt to escape deportation from Germany by hiding on a westbound freighter — under the cargo cover of a new BMW — was desperate and ill conceived. With only 1.5 liters of water and some nuts and dates, Walid Kabil did not have enough supplies, heat or space to survive the April voyage. He feared being returned to Morocco, where he said he had been arrested because of his political activism. But cold, aching and dehydrated, he sought help from the ship’s crew. After the ship docked in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and he was handed over to Canadian border authorities to make his asylum claim, Mr. Kabil was sent to a provincial jail filled with people accused of violent crimes, including murder.

Today's cars have an unprecedented capacity to surveil people inside and around them, and it's raising alarms with privacy advocates. A growing chorus of advocates and politicians say automakers aren't doing enough to protect consumer data from companies, criminals or even the government itself. "Our cars aren't a means of independence and privacy anymore," said Jen Caltrider, director of the Mozilla Foundation's Privacy Not Included program, in an interview with CNBC. GM, Nissan, Stellantis and BMW responded with statements saying they take customer privacy and data protection very seriously and comply with all applicable laws. In late April, two senators asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate automakers for allegedly deceiving customers about the companies' data management practices.

Electric cars are more expensive than gasoline models largely because batteries cost so much. But new technology could turn those pricey devices into an asset, giving owners benefits like reduced utility bills, lower lease payments or free parking. Automakers would make money by serving as intermediaries between car owners and power suppliers. Millions of cars could be thought of as a huge energy system that, for the first time, will be connected to another enormous energy system, the electrical grid, said Matthias Preindl, an associate professor of power electronic systems at Columbia University. “They will interact more in the future, and they can potentially support one another — or stress one another.”

EU approves Italian aid for $5.4 billion STMicro chip plant
  + stars: | 2024-05-31 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
STMicroelectronics has committed 5 billion euros ($5.4 billion) of investment in what it calls the world's first fully integrated Silicon Carbide (SiC) plant in Italy. The project is backed by 2 billion euros from the Italian state, and is the result of the EU's Chips Act which aims to provide support for Europe's chip industry. The European Commission on Friday approved Italian state aid for STMicroelectronics to build a 5 billion euro ($5.4 billion) microchip plant as Europe battles to reduce reliance on Asian imports for vital manufacturing components. The STMicro plant will produce chips made from silicon carbide, which is more energy-efficient than standard silicon. STMicro is the largest maker of silicon carbide chips, which are more expensive to manufacture than regular silicon chips but favoured by automakers because they are energy-efficient, lightweight and tough.
