It builds on the P/E ratio (price-earnings ratio) by incorporating the expected long term earnings growth rate, providing a more dynamic perspective. Using a two-axis growth of a similar relative scale, we can normalize and compare BJ's revenue growth to Costco's. Costco's growth rate is better than that of its smaller competitors, but is the stock itself a better value? Over the past five years, Costco has experienced a growth rate of 11%, and BJ's is a more modest but still respectable 7%. BJ's PEG ratio is 21/7 = 3.

Sam's Club CEO told BI the warehouse club's automation push isn't about wanting to trim its workforce. Sam's Club CEO Chris Nicholas told Business Insider that the company's automation push isn't about trimming the number of employees in stores long-term. That's almost double what a typical club employs, according to Sam's Club. In the low-markup world of warehouse club retail, overall profitability is heavily tied to membership fees. The report didn't blow us away, but it still offered plenty of reminders on why Costco investors should stick around. Total revenue in its fiscal 2024 fourth quarter totaled $79.7 billion, missing analysts' expectations of $79.97 billion, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. Costco has succeeded for decades, but the high inflation of recent years has made the company's value-focused ethos really shine. Put it all together, we're increasing our price target on the stock to $950 a share from $875. In the quarter, Costco's membership renewal rate in the U.S. and Canada came in at 92.9%, a tick lower than the 93% rate observed in the third fiscal quarter, while worldwide held constant at 90.5%.

Most people expected fireworks when it was announced that former President Donald Trump would appear at this year's National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. And the conversation has heightened pressure on the NABJ from its members over the Trump visit. NABJ President Ken Lemon in a statement Tuesday said that the organization had been in talks with Harris' team for an in-person panel before she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. But April Ryan, the White House correspondent for The Grio, reported that NABJ leadership informed Harris' team that it was preferable that she be in-person for her appearance. NABJ member Kathia Woods took to X to express her opposition to the organization's decision to invite Trump to speak in Chicago.

Washington Post Editor Karen Attiah leads a discussion on Saudi hacking techniques at the Oslo Freedom Forum 2019 on May 28, 2019 in Oslo, Norway. The co-chair of the annual National Association of Black Journalists convention stepped down Tuesday in apparent reaction to that group's decision to have former President Donald Trump speak at its convention and career fair in Chicago on Wednesday, among other factors. "To the journalists interviewing Trump, I wish them the best of luck," NABJ24 convention co-chair Karen Attiah wrote in a social media post announcing her decision to resign her position. CNBC has requested comment from Attiah and from NABJ, as well as from a spokesman for Trump's presidential campaign about Attiah's announcement. NABJ on Monday announced that the Republican nominee Trump would "participate in a conversation with journalists" at the convention before attendees.

The membership-based warehouse club said Wednesday that it will increase its membership fee by $5 in the U.S. and Canada as of Sept. 1. Costco said the fee increases would affect about 52 million memberships, a little over half of which are executive memberships. Costco relies on membership fees to drive most of its revenue and help keep merchandise prices low. Its rival, Walmart- owned Sam's Club, hiked its own membership fee in 2022 for the first time in nine years. At BJ's Wholesale, annual membership fees are $55 and $110, for club members and its own higher tier, respectively.

The S & P 500 has yielded an average return of 7.9% since 1928, the year Herbert Hoover was elected. LBJ's presidency was also notable because he chose not to seek reelection in 1968, a year with a modest S & P return of 7.7%. A market correction could be more likely now than it seemed two weeks ago, as suggested by the current pricing of S & P options. Options such as SPDR S & P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) August $535 puts are currently priced around $5.50, about 1% of SPY's price, while S & P 500 5350 puts are around $50. June's historical average return comes out at just 0.1% while July typically sees a 1.2% gain, according to Stovall. Summer exception This summer could prove to be an exception to the typical summer lull, given the upcoming presidential election, Stovall said, noting that the broad market index has posted an average 3.7% summer increase during the 19 election years since World War II. Ahead of this year's election, Stovall expects a few aerospace and defense contractors to stand out. Other areas of the market that should survive and thrive during a slow summer period are consumer staples companies, tobacco names, health-care distributors and pharmaceuticals, Stovall said. Costco and Walmart shares are up roughly 29% and 2% this year, respectively, posting strong returns as consumers have become more motivated by price and value in a high-inflation environment.

But this heavy focus on just a few stocks has led one portfolio manager to urge investors to diversify, naming two stocks he thinks look particularly attractive. Dunn, who also holds the title of co-head of value equity at Morgan Stanley, said other stocks offered investors "a lot of opportunity," naming two he likes. Thermo Fisher Scientific Healthcare services and biotechnology company Thermo Fisher is another favorite for Dunn, who sees it as an industry leader and "supermarket of tools and analytics." "We think [Thermo Fisher is] really ready to sort of benefit from this as the year progresses." Shares in Thermo Fisher are up around 9.5% year-to-date and 12.8% in the last 12 months.
