WASHINGTON — The Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday night to reject three efforts led by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders that would have blocked certain offensive weapons sales to Israel. In a speech on the Senate floor ahead of the vote, Sanders argued that the resolutions "would not affect any of the systems Israel uses to defend itself from incoming attacks," focusing instead on offensive weapons. "As I have said many, many times: Israel had the absolute right to respond to that horrific Hamas attack, as any other country would. I don’t think anybody here in the United States Senate disagrees with that," he said in his floor speech. More than 43,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel’s offensive into the dense enclave since the attack, according to health officials in Gaza.

The Senate on Wednesday resoundingly rejected a series of three resolutions to block weapons transfers to Israel, but the move to curtail American support for the war in Gaza drew substantial support from Democrats, reflecting growing consternation in the party over the conflict. Seventeen Senate Democrats and two independents backed at least one of the measures, a display of deepening divisions over Israel’s conduct after 13 months of war and the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinians. The measures were offered by Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, who has been a vocal critic of Israel’s tactics in the war. He has also been a frequent critic of the Biden administration for continuing to support Israel militarily despite ample evidence of human rights violations in Gaza. Ruben Gallego will be Arizona’s first Latino senator next year, NBC News projects, after he defeated Republican Kari Lake amid a protracted vote count in one of the key swing states. Trump won the state in 2016 and won it again this year by what appears to be his biggest margin in any of the core swing states. But he kept his message homed on the issues behind those identities, linking them to border security, comprehensive immigration reform and expanded mental health services for veterans. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on Sunday defended keeping Justice Sonia Sotomayor on the Supreme Court, after some Democrats have reportedly considered pressuring her to step down while President Joe Biden is still in office. He added that he’s heard “a little bit” of talk from Democratic senators about asking Sotomayor, who is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, to step aside. Sonia Sotomayor, who is 70, is serving a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. If Sotomayor were to die during Trump’s term, she would likely be replaced by a conservative justice, pushing the now 6-3 conservative court further to the right. She died in September 2020 and Trump, then serving his first term, appointed the conservative Justice Amy Coney Barrett to replace her, leading to the court’s current conservative makeup.

CNN —Republican Sen. Deb Fischer will win reelection in Nebraska, defeating an unexpectedly strong challenge from independent Dan Osborn, CNN projects. Fischer was first elected to the Senate in 2012, when she became the first female senator elected to a full term in Nebraska. Fischer, who will begin her third Senate term in January, said she changed her mind after realizing how important seniority is for members of Congress. Former President Donald Trump also sought to tie Osborn to the left in his endorsement of Fischer. The state also held a special Senate election to fill the other seat left vacant by Republican Ben Sasse’s resignation.
