The artist and activist Nan Goldin makes no secret of her views about Israel and the wars in Gaza and Lebanon. She has signed high-profile protest letters calling Israel’s actions in Gaza “a genocide.” She has marched with pro-Palestinian protesters and was arrested at a demonstration in New York. In a magazine interview last year, she said she had “been on a cultural boycott of Israel for my whole life.”So a major exhibition of Goldin’s photo slide shows and films that opened over the weekend at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin seemed like a high-profile anomaly in Germany, where lawmakers have said that support for boycotting Israel is antisemitic, and where artists who have taken positions like Goldin’s have had museum shows canceled, prizes suspended and talks shut down.

This past week marked 58 years since the opening night for the Broadway premiere of “Cabaret” in 1966. The composer John Kander, the lyricist Fred Ebb and the playwright Joe Masteroff wrote “Cabaret” in collaboration with the director Harold Prince as a response to the era. Night after night, I witnessed audiences grappling with the raw, unsettling reflection that “Cabaret” held up to them. I’m hearing from friends in the current Broadway production of “Cabaret” that the line is once again getting an audible response, but of a different sort. Today, it seems the line is playing exactly as the Nazi-sympathizing Emcee would have intended.

Blue Man Group, the wordless theatrical troupe of drum-beating, paint-splattering, bald blue performers, will end its run in New York on Feb. 2, more than three decades and 17,000 performances after it began. The troupe, which started as experimental street theater and is now a subsidiary of the global circus behemoth Cirque du Soleil, will also end its Chicago run on Jan. 5. But the show will continue to run elsewhere, with long-running companies in Berlin, Boston and Las Vegas, and a forthcoming run in Orlando, where it is scheduled to reopen next spring after a four-year closure prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. There have also been touring productions. The end of the New York production was announced in a news release by Jack Kenn, the company’s managing director; the release did not say why the show was closing, and a spokeswoman for the company declined to provide any further information.

Ford Explorer electric cars are parked on car transporters on the Ford factory premises. It is the first electric car from Ford in Europe. The US car manufacturer Ford wants to cut 2,900 jobs in Germany by the end of 2027 in order to reduce costs. Ford said on Wednesday it would cut around 14% of its European workforce, blaming significant losses in recent years compounded by weak demand for electric vehicles, a lack of government support for the shift to EVs, and rising competition. The European Union has slapped tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, saying they benefit from unfair subsidies from China's government.

Mauro Pimentel/AFP/Getty ImagesThe moment was a fluke, the type of logistical error that’s almost inevitable at gatherings of almost two dozen world leaders. Yet it was difficult to ignore the impression it left: that Biden is disappearing from view as the world turns its attention to his successor. What members of Biden’s team have been willing to acknowledge is how little they actually know about what Trump and his team may be planning. In Lima and Rio de Janiero, Biden fielded no questions from the press and his aides spoke only off-camera. Reporters had opportunities to ask Biden questions at the G20 summit in Rome in 2021, in Bali in 2022, and in Vietnam in 2023, following the summit’s conclusion in India the prior day.

Protesters opposed to Tesla’s expansion of its plant near Berlin were holding out in trees Tuesday as German police climbed up ladders and cut down rope structures in an attempt to clear their forested camp. In May, the protesters clashed with police as some attempted to storm the facility, the US carmaker’s only European gigafactory, which employs some 12,000 staff. Led by the Disrupt Tesla group, protesters argue that plans to double the factory’s size will damage the environment. “There are still people in the trees here who are resisting,” said Mila, a spokesperson for the protest camp. Although some protesters had left of their own accord after police announced the clearance Tuesday, the police said “there are currently still people in trees and rope structures” and the effort to clear the camp was therefore ongoing.

An Illinois woman is charged with hate crimes after allegedly attacking a man for wearing a Palestine hoodie at a suburban Chicago Panera Bread over the weekend. “Szustakiewicz was at the Panera Bread when she confronted and yelled expletives at a man regarding a sweatshirt he was wearing with the word Palestine written on it,” authorities said. The hour-long conversation marked the return of diplomacy to the decade-long conflict, even if their talk brought the familiar refrain it was not yet time to talk. One Western official said there was an “overall collective holding of breath” in Western capitals ahead of Trump’s inauguration. “The Germans speaking to Putin – that will have gone down badly” among Ukraine’s allies, the official said. “Giving Putin that positive bounce will have irked the French and others.” French President Emmanuel Macron has been particularly vocal about continuing support for Ukraine. Kremlin critics also warn of its history of using diplomacy as a pause or foil to pursuing its military goals.

But price rises in Russia are eye-watering by comparison – and just one symptom of an economy that is overheating. “Prices are rising because of the war,” Alexandra Prokopenko at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin told CNN. The military budget will rise by nearly a quarter in 2025, amounting to one-third of all state spending and 6.3 per cent of gross domestic product. Analysts don’t see the Russian economy as tumbling over a precipice but instead as a slowly gathering crisis. Russia has traditionally turned to central Asia for unskilled labor, and Putin recently suggested more foreign workers are needed.

BERLIN — German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke Friday with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Kremlin leader’s first publicly announced conversation with the sitting head of a major Western power in nearly two years. Scholz urged Putin to be open to negotiations with Ukraine, his office said. Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said Scholz urged Putin in the hour-long call to withdraw his troops and end the full-scale invasion launched in February 2022. The new communication between Scholz and Putin — their first since December 2022 — comes at a time of widespread speculation about what the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump will mean for Ukraine. The U.S., South Korea and Ukraine say North Korea has sent thousands of troops to Russia to support its war against Ukraine.

Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

The conversation on Friday was the first time Scholz had spoken with Putin in two years. It comes as the German leader gears up for a snap election and Europe waits to hear US President-elect Donald Trump’s plan for ending the war in Ukraine. “He stressed Germany’s unbroken determination to back Ukraine in its defense against Russian aggression for as long as necessary,” the spokesperson added. Ukraine said however that phone conversations with Putin brought no added value on the path to achieving a “just peace” in Ukraine. Sovereign AI is "more driven by the industry naming it that, than it is from the policymakers' side," Gow said. On Wednesday, Denmark laid out a landmark white paper outlining how companies can use AI in compliance with the incoming EU AI Act — the world's first major AI law. How regulation fueled a mindset shiftThat's not to say regulations haven't proven an important factor in getting tech giants to think more about building localized AI infrastructure within Europe. The concept of AI sovereignty is also getting buy-in from local European tech firms. Orange hasn't yet selected a partner for these sovereign AI model ambitions.

Over 50,000 people are gathered in Baku, Azerbaijan, for the United Nations climate conference known as COP29. This is the second largest of the annual gatherings in their history, according to official estimates and recently published data. Diplomats from nearly 200 member countries will seek a deal on climate financing to support the clean energy transition in developing economies. Recent years have seen a spike in the number of guests, particularly from Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. CNN —Germany is set to hold a snap election on February 23 after an agreement was reached among parties in the country’s fractured parliament on Tuesday, according to reports from public broadcaster ARD. The confidence vote will be held on December 16 following an agreement from all parliamentary parties, according to ARD. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier needs to rubber-stamp the date of the election, but reports suggest this is a formality. Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU, said last week, “there is absolutely no reason to wait until January” to call the confidence vote. His government has grown increasingly unpopular in Germany, with Scholz also one of the least popular chancellors ever, according to a September opinion poll.

Germany is set to hold a federal election in February, earlier than Chancellor Olaf Scholz had originally proposed after his ruling coalition collapsed last week. The election is set to be held on February 23, according to sources within the parliamentary group of Scholz' social democratic party (SPD). It is a necessary step ahead of early elections in Germany as the chancellor must first call for the vote in parliament. Lindner was replaced by Jörg Kukies who was appointed as the new finance minister on November 7. Scholz' SPD and the Green party will form a minority government in Germany until the election in February.

The two internet search firms agreed a joint venture, called the European Search Perspective or EUSP, with ownership split 50-50 between both firms. Why build a European search index? Currently, alternative search engines like Ecosia, Qwant and DuckDuckGo don't develop their own back-end infrastructure. The new venture will see them build their own search index from scratch, however, amassing results from a mix of different search engines. Both companies will use the search index themselves but the tech will also be made available to other independent search engines and tech firms.
