CNN —Radiohead singer Thom Yorke took off his guitar and left the stage during his solo concert in Melbourne, Australia, on Wednesday after being heckled by a pro-Palestinian protester. Yorke replies by saying, “Come up here and say that. Come up on the f**king stage and say what you want to say.”Pointing at the heckler, he continued: “Don’t stand there like a coward. Radiohead has previously come under scrutiny for the band’s decision to perform in Tel Aviv. However, the band rejected the call, with Yorke saying, “Playing in a country is not the same as endorsing its government” and music is about “crossing borders, not building them.”

Zuckerberg's reveal of Orion late last month has triggered a level of enthusiasm that's unfamiliar in the metaverse. He showed off the gadget — a pair of black, thick-framed AR glasses — to the live audience before placing it on his face. In the meantime, Meta is looking to build on the success of its second-generation Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. The smart glasses went viral on TikTok during the holiday shopping season, and sales exceeded both companies' expectations. Meta is also opening a pop-up shop to showcase the smart glasses and to get them in front of more consumers.

Reuters —Boeing said on Friday that Ted Colbert, president and CEO of its defense, space and security unit will be leaving the company effective immediately. “I’d like to share that Ted Colbert, president and CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS), will be leaving Boeing, and that l’ve asked Steve Parker to temporarily oversee BDS, effective immediately, until a replacement for Ted is named at a later date,” Kelly Ortberg, Boeing’s president and CEO, said Friday in a statement. In the most recent quarter, Boeing’s Defense, Space & Security unit lost $913 million, up from the $527 million loss in the same period a year ago, after a narrow profit in the first quarter. But both the second quarter loss and the 2023 full-year loss were more than the company’s troubled commercial aircraft unit lost in the same periods. Boeing’s shares closed down about 1% on Friday and have lost about 41% so far this year.

For the first time in its century-plus history, the Anti-Defamation League is suing a Fortune 500 company, Intel , joining a case brought by the law firm of Wigdor on behalf of a former Israeli employee of the technology firm. Intel has operated in Israel for 50 years, where it has invested more than $50 billion, and remains one of Israel's largest private employers with more than 11,700 Israeli employees. The company estimated $8.7 billion in exports from its Intel operations, accounting for 5.5% of Israel's high-tech exports and 1.75% of the country's GDP, in 2022. When employers do not meet their legal obligations in protecting their Jewish employees, ADL will not hesitate to act." The former Israeli employee also recently sent an open letter to Intel's board of directors about his complaint.

The portfolio manager whisperers

AdvertisementHistorically, a hedge fund's chief investment office or senior portfolio manager was responsible for vetting and wooing key investment hires. They can also help hedge funds save on outside recruiting costs, which can add up to tens of millions a year. Hedge funds targeted institutional salespeople at investment banks with exposure to hedge funds, as well as asset allocators with chops in portfolio-manager selection and due diligence. Assets at multimanager hedge funds have boomed since 2018. The principle may work for fictional baseball diamonds, but the reality at hedge funds is more complicated.

Soon, dozens more students protesting the monthslong assault on Gaza were arrested at New York and Yale universities. Ash told CNN he was one of 20 students arrested following a sit-in on November 8. The charges were later dropped, according to the Brown Daily Herald, but 41 students arrested the following month in similar circumstances still face charges, which protesters now want dropped. Separately, the referendum on the BDS resolution “did not move forward because of potential conflict with federal and state laws,” the university told CNN in a statement. Police then were aggressive, Agrawal told CNN.

All have been hit by a boycott campaign over Israel's military offensive in the Gaza Strip since the deadly Hamas attack in southern Israel on Oct. 7. Western brands are feeling the impact in Egypt and Jordan, and there are signs the campaign is spreading in some other Arab countries including Kuwait and Morocco. Videos have circulated of what appear to be Israeli troops washing clothes with well-known detergent brands which viewers are urged to boycott. In Kuwait City on Tuesday evening, a tour of seven branches of Starbucks, McDonald's and KFC found them nearly empty. Previous boycott campaigns in Egypt, the Arab world's most populous nation, had less impact, including those advocated by the Palestinian-led Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Among the catalysts are Palestinian and Jewish-led groups that have been active for years in opposing Israeli policies toward the Palestinians and who now demand a cease-fire in Gaza. The groups have roots in a movement known as BDS, which calls for the boycott, divestment and sanction of Israel. That campaign generated heated rhetoric long before Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7 and Israel launched its counteroffensive. Advocates wrote op-eds for campus newspapers with appeals to protect Palestinian human rights, often accusing Israel of colonialism and racism. Protests have led to disruptions on Capitol Hill, at a major train station in Chicago and New York City’s Grand Central Station.

Journal Editorial Report: Pushback emerges among donors and employers. Images: AP Composite: Mark KellyThe “boycott, divestment and sanctions” movement, or BDS, seeks to strangle Israel economically. It has gone after international tech giant Hewlett Packard Enterprise for allegedly doing business with Israel’s government, as well as Sabra, a food company with Israeli ownership. But BDS also seeks to harm more-vulnerable targets: small businesses. On Oct. 30, the Philly Palestine Coalition posted on Instagram urging its 15,000 followers to boycott Philadelphia restaurants that are “owned by Zionists,” serve Israeli food, raise money for Israel, or are owned by Philadelphia-based Starr Restaurants.

Boeing lost another $482 million in the third quarter on the new Air Force One aircraft. AdvertisementAdvertisementBoeing lost another $482 million on building two planes that will become the new Air Force One, according to its latest earnings report. Known as VC-25Bs, the new aircraft will be larger and more fuel efficient, allowing the US Air Force to save roughly $1.9 billion in operations and maintenance costs during the jets' 20 to 30-year lifespans. When Air Force One was last replaced during the George H.W. Revenue rose 13% to $18.1 billion, reflecting the delivery of 105 commercial aircraft, while the net loss narrowed from $3.3 billion to $1.6 billion.

The Boeing KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling tanker is seen before a delivery celebration to the U.S. Air Force in Everett, Washington, U.S., January 24, 2019. Despite absorbing $4.4 billion in losses in 2022 – which executives said would lower the risk of future cost overruns – the unit has seen little improvement this year. Excluding last year, losses on Boeing's defense programs in 2023 exceed those from all years since 2014, according to a Reuters review of Boeing’s regulatory filings. The latest charge for Air Force One brought total losses to $2.4 billion on a $3.9 billion contract to develop two planes. A better bet, and one Boeing's defense segment is aggressively pursuing, is inking future contracts for next-generation fighter jets and cutting-edge drones.

Donors often give for specific purposes — facilities, faculty research, technology on campus, athletics, scholarships and financial aid for low-income students. The Wexner Foundation said it’s breaking off ties with Harvard University, alleging the school has been “tiptoeing” over Hamas’ attacks. Lawrence Summers, the former president of Harvard and US Treasury Secretary, has criticized the “morally unconscionable” student statement and Harvard leaders’ response. But he said that financial threats from donors were not the right solution to influencing universities’ positions on these issues.
