Indiana plans to carry out its first execution since 2009 before sunrise Wednesday, with much of the process concealed from the public. The Indiana Department of Corrections said Tuesday evening that Corcoran requested Ben & Jerry's ice cream for his last meal. Some death penalty states have had issues obtaining lethal injection drugs, leading to a moratorium on the practice. Of the 27 states that still allow for capital punishment, only Indiana and Wyoming exclude media witnesses, according to the nonprofit Death Penalty Information Center. Seven other inmates remain on Indiana's death row, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Grubhub will pay $25 million to settle charges it misled customers about the cost of their delivery and drivers about how much they could earn on the food-delivery platform. Grubhub also allegedly engaged in false advertising to attract drivers, citing hourly pay rates "well above what drivers could realistically expect to earn," according to a release accompanying the civil complaint. Finally, Grubhub falsely advertised restaurants on its platform that had not signed up with it. “Today’s action holds Grubhub to account, putting an end to these illegal practices and securing nearly $25 million for the people cheated by Grubhub’s tactics. The agencies had sought a $140 million judgment against the company, but reduced it to what Grubhub is able to pay, the agencies said.

Grubhub will pay $25 million to settle a lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul over alleged unlawful practices that harmed diners, workers and small businesses, the FTC announced on Tuesday. The complaint claims that Grubhub deceived diners about delivery costs and blocked access to their accounts. Grubhub has had as many as 325,000 unaffiliated restaurants on its platform, more than half of all of the available restaurants on Grubhub, according to the complaint. The company allegedly listed unaffiliated restaurants to drive growth, but diners often had to pay more in delivery fees from those restaurants which, in turn, damaged their reputations. The complaint further alleged that Grubhub would often avoid removing unaffiliated restaurants off the platform when requested, instead trying to sell them paid partnerships.

watch nowThe European Central Bank delivered an expected quarter-point interest rate cut this week — and alongside the announcement came several indications that rates will swiftly move even lower early next year. Economists also jumped on the removal of the ECB's message that the central bank must "keep policy rates sufficiently restrictive for as long as necessary." She also said that a larger, half-point cut had been debated, and that Governing Council (GC) members unanimously voted to reduce rates. The ECB cut the deposit facility — its key rate — to 3% on Thursday. What constitutes the neutral rate has been a key point of debate in recent months, and Lagarde said Thursday that while it had not been discussed at the December meeting, staff saw it between 1.75% and 2.5%.

Barcelona, which has an estimated 20,000 Airbnb listings, has said it will ban all short-term rentals by 2028. New York enacted a law in 2023 that wiped nearly all short-term rentals off the map. When Airbnb was new and growing rapidly in the 2010s, there was little regulation on short-term rentals. For one, the country's strict travel regulations around COVID-19 lasted longer than measures taken by most other nations, which created a drag on travel bookings. Bianca Tavolari, a researcher and member of the advisory board of the Global Observatory of Short-Term Rentals, a group of Latin American organizations focused on housing, says Brazil has lagged in regulating short-term rentals, though a court ruled last year that hosts must have explicit consent from property owners to list apartments or condos as short-term rentals.

Best of all, these housing hustles are low-maintenance side gigs that don't require a ton of time or effort on your part. Here is my best advice if you want to turn your home into a potentially lucrative side hustle. Rent storage spaceSome sites, including Neighbor and Stache, allow people with empty space to rent it out for storage. You simply need to publish a profile, set rates, snap photos and tell potential visitors what they get access to besides the pool and deck. A house that might rent for $100 a night on Airbnb can rent for $100 an hour here.

A view of the headquarters of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), before a press conference in Zurich, Switzerland, March 21, 2024. The Swiss National Bank on Thursday cut its key interest rate by 50 basis points, exceeding expectations of a smaller trim amid an ongoing tussle with depressed inflation and a strong Swiss franc. More than 85% of economists polled by Reuters had forecast the bank would implement a smaller, 25-basis-point cut. The SNB's easing of monetary policy today takes this development into account," the bank said Thursday after its first meeting under new Chair Martin Schlegel. It assumes the SNB policy rate holds at 0.5% over the entire forecast horizon.

Skyscrapers on the skyline from the offices of the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Germany, on Monday, Nov. 25, 2024. European Central Bank policymakers are set to hold their last meeting of the year on Thursday, with expectations firmly set for the fourth quarter-percentage-point interest rate cut of 2024. The rate had been held at 4% since Sept. 2023, prior to the first cut of the current easing cycle in June 2024. The European central bank has firmly guided expectations this year, unlike the Federal Reserve, which surprised many with its 50-basis-point rate cut in September, and the Bank of England, which has left market-watchers guessing due to its divided committee. Two key details will be in focus: firstly, staff macroeconomic projections for growth and inflation, which were last delivered in September.
