‘Reel’ is a love letter to the Harlem Renaissance — and Black creativesRyan remembers the exact moment she was inspired to write most of her books. “These Black women with these big afros, just unapologetically gorgeous, because that’s something that defies what culture tells us about ourselves. “I wanted women who are living with chronic illness, specifically lupus, to feel beautiful, to feel loved, to feel like they weren’t too much,” she says. She describes her books as “Trojan horses” to “smuggle in discourse” and start difficult conversations readers may not usually have. For nearly a decade, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has been working to enforce oversight over Navient, a major student-loan company. Warren and some of her Democratic colleagues were concerned that the company was not properly managing student-loan borrowers' payment options, causing them to accumulate unaffordable student debt. However, it released an accountability framework in December that outlined enforcement actions it would take should servicers harm borrowers, including fining servicers and transferring borrowers to better-performing servicers. For example, MOHELA was the first servicer to be hit with a $7 million fine last October for failing to send on-time billing statements to over 2 million borrowers. Terminate MOHELA's contract and put loan services on notice: we will not tolerate your negligence and exploitation; we will not let you profiteer off vulnerable student borrowers."

A number of Democratic lawmakers are planning to participate in a series of counter-programming events on Wednesday instead of attending Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress. It’s the latest example of how Democrats remain divided over Israel’s handling of its war with Hamas. Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, a Washington state Democrat, is expected to deliver opening remarks at the event, according to an advisory shared with CNN. Approximately 80 House Democrats and at least six Democratic senators are expected to skip Netanyahu’s speech on Wednesday, according to sources and public statements reviewed by CNN. House Democratic leadership has given their members room to make their own decisions about whether to attend the speech.

CNN —Joe Biden is pushing progressives who are already sour on his presidency to the limit with a tough new executive action barring most asylum applications from migrants crossing the US-Mexico border illegally. Of all issues tested, Biden recorded his lowest approval rating on immigration in a CNN poll in February — just 30%. Progressives face their own dilemmaBiden would never say it bluntly in public, but his gamble with progressives carries an implicit question — where else are they going to go? Some Haley supporters on Tuesday welcomed Biden’s immigration actions, CNN’s Kit Maher reported. “While many Haley voters continue to have policy differences, this common-sense action is a clear step in the right direction to address one of the top priorities of many Haley voters,” the Haley Voters Working Group, a coalition of approximately 25 conservative Haley supporters, posted on X.

New York Fleet Week, the Movie

“I feel like I’m in a movie right now,” Petty Officer Third Class Ayanna Crawford said last weekend as she navigated the bow tie of Times Square, with its hordes of panhandlers costumed as Elmo, Minnie Mouse and Spider-Man. “I’m in culture shock.”Petty Officer Crawford, 20, who serves on the Wasp-class amphibious assault vessel U.S.S. Bataan, had cruised into town with a fellow crew member, Airman Kobe Brents, 22, and many of the roughly 2,300 sailors, Marines and Coast Guard members who alight in New York each Fleet Week for a weeklong annual celebration of those who serve and protect the United States at sea. Held nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week often has the unintended effect of reminding even the most jaded of locals that the gritty and complicated place they call home remains a peerless backdrop for what can sometimes seem like a never-ending cinematic reel. It was the film director Milos Forman who was reputed to have termed New York “the only city which in reality looks better than on postcards.”

Martin Gruenberg is still the leader of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, an agency that supervises U.S. banks, but after a bipartisan grilling on Wednesday by members of a House committee overseeing bank regulators, he appeared to be hanging on by a thread. Democrats expressed dismay over his responses to the crisis at his agency, after a scathing report of a culture of widespread sexual harassment and discrimination. One congresswoman appeared to call for him to resign, as Republicans have been doing for months. “Personally, I do not have confidence that you can continue to lead in this role,” Representative Ayanna S. Pressley, Democrat of Massachusetts, told Mr. Gruenberg during an exchange. (Two other federal bank regulators, the acting comptroller of the currency, Michael Hsu, and the Federal Reserve vice chair, Michael Barr, also offered testimony on bank regulatory matters, but much of the committee’s focus was on the F.D.I.C.)

The ‘outside agitator’ narrative has a long history

In these instances, and others, authorities have not offered many specifics about who the “outside agitators” are, how significant their numbers are or how they differentiated outsiders from university-affiliated protesters. “It seems to me that the ‘outside agitator’ claim is one to shift the focus away from the grievances of the students and their protest.”The emphasis on “outside agitators,” Morris says, detracts from the central issue that is driving students to protest: Israel’s war in Gaza. ‘Outside agitator’ trope has a long historyYou don’t have to look far back in history to find examples of the “outside agitator” narrative. “We want to say as clearly as possible - we welcome ‘outside agitators’ to our struggle against the ruthless genocide of Palestinians.”Still, the use of the term is more complicated than it seems. As pro-Israel politicians have amplified concerns around antisemitism, some supporters of students’ right to free expression have suggested “outside agitators” are undermining otherwise peaceful protests.

But as the special election to succeed the disgraced former congressman has made painfully clear to Democrats, Santos’ victory was not a fluke or anomaly. Nassau County in 2024 is sharply divided and – in a word – angry. The year before, Democrat Laura Curran, the top official in Nassau County, was ousted by Republican Bruce Blakeman. ATLANTA (AP) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is considering a ban on certain hair-straightening chemicals that have been used by Black women for years and that research shows may increase the risk of uterine cancer. But Black hair stylists say such products — specifically the ones being looked at by the FDA, which contain formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals — have fallen out of favor, especially among younger generations. The possible rule would apply to both salon-grade and at-home products, FDA spokesperson Courtney Rhodes said. Pressley said in an Oct. 6 statement that the FDA's possible action is “a win for public health — especially the health of Black women." The risks for Black women could shift with better regulation of chemical hair straighteners, said Dr. Kimberly Bertrand, an author of the Boston University study.
