OpenAI is reportedly teaming up with Broadcom and TSMC to build custom AI chips, per Reuters. OpenAI could have its custom chips by 2026 but is reportedly dropping plans to build its own fabs. AdvertisementBuilding custom AI chips has long been the preserve of a select few tech companies — but OpenAI might be about to join the party. AdvertisementOpenAI's move, which will also reportedly see it incorporate AMD chips into its supply mix, means it would reduce its dependency on Nvidia, the market leader for AI chips. While it's unclear how much OpenAI's reported chip-building push will cost, creating custom AI chips doesn't come cheap.

With its core business under threat, Google has spent the past two years pouring resources into building its own AI chips. In charge of those efforts is Vahdat, one of Business Insider's 2024 AI Power List picks. Vahdat has been at the company for more than a decade and is today setting the direction for Google's silicon strategy. That also means working closely with Google DeepMind to take its breakthrough models and integrate them throughout Google's products, whether YouTube's creator tools or Google's search ads. He's been covering Google's custom cloud chips since they launched in 2015. Google was the first cloud provider to make custom AI chips. Microsoft 's first custom AI chip, Maia, wasn't announced until the end of 2023. But being first in AI chips hasn't translated to a top spot in the overall rat race of generative AI. Google TPUs still dominate among custom cloud AI accelerators, with 58% of the market share, according to The Futurum Group.

Now, Apple has revealed it uses TPUs to train its AI models, positioning Google chips as an alternative to Nvidia's market-leading GPUs. CNBC got an exclusive look inside the lab where Google makes its chips, where its top executive showcased TPU Version 6, and its new Arm-based CPU, Axion, both coming out later in 2024.

AI Agents The launch of "AI Agents" demonstrated the real-world applications of Alphabet's generative AI advancements — a key box that investors want to see checked in the search for money-making opportunities . These applications are clearly the next phase of the generative AI revolution beyond the development of LLMs and deployment of general-purpose chatbots. So, too, will their customers that harness the power of the AI agents to better serve their own clients, increase employee productivity, and drive corporate efficiencies. Updates to Vertex AI Alphabet updated Vertex AI — its platform for building and deploying AI models — to include an agent-building feature. That essentially allows businesses to create customized AI agents on top of Gemini models.

The move gives Google an edge in its competition with Amazon and Microsoft in the AI cloud race. Google said Axion will deliver better performance and energy efficiency than prior chips. AdvertisementGoogle has a new edge against competitors like Amazon and Microsoft: it's partnering with Arm to make more of its own chips. It's following Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure in creating custom Arm-based processors. Google said Axion will improve performance for "general-purpose workloads," like open-source databases, web and app servers, in-memory caches, data analytics engines, media processing, and AI training.

Google is trying to make cloud computing more affordable with a custom-built Arm -based server chip. With the new Arm-based chip, Google is playing catch-up with rivals such as Amazon and Microsoft, which have been employing a similar strategy for years. Google has used Arm-based server computers for internal purposes to run YouTube advertising, the BigTable and Spanner databases and the BigQuery data analytics tool. Arm chips, which are popular in smartphones, offer a shorter set of instructions than x86 chips, which are commonly found in PCs. Axion offers 30% better performance than the fastest general-purpose Arm-based virtual machines in the cloud and 50% better performance than than comparable VMs based on x86, Google said.

Flavia Royon, Argentina's Secretary of Energy, poses for a portrait during the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston, Texas, U.S., March 8, 2023. Ten fuel shipments imported by the government are beginning to arrive, although distribution may take a few days, Energy Secretary Flavia Royon told a local radio station, noting that there would be no abrupt price increases. Royon attributed the shortage in part to tourism during a long weekend and rumors of possible price increases following the Oct. 22 presidential election. Argentine refineries supply 80% of the local market while the rest comes from fuel imports. Among the factors causing the shortage, the companies cited high demand, the presidential elections, the beginning of crop planting and a higher than usual dependence on imports.

Chief Engineer Jim Stein wears the new spacesuit during the Axiom Space Artemis III Lunar Spacesuit event at Space Center Houston in Houston, Texas, on March 15, 2023. "We're pleased that humanity's next steps on the moon are going to be in an Axiom spacesuit," Suffredini added. NASA's Artemis program represents a series of missions with escalating goals. In addition to Axiom, NASA also awarded a contract to Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of Raytheon , to build next-generation spacesuits. Under the Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services program, NASA expects to provide up to $3.5 billion for spacesuits through 2034.
NASA has been using the current spacesuits on the International Space Station for decades and they are showing their age. "The spacesuits that are being used now in the International Space Station by NASA are suits that were really designed in the '70s. Now the agency is turning to two commercial companies: Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies , to build and maintain its new generation of spacesuits. Under the Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services Contract, or xEVAS, NASA is providing Collins and Axiom, along with a number of their industry partners, with up to $3.5 billion through 2034. NASA hopes to use this new suit on the International Space Station by 2026.
