Lenders often encourage federal student loan borrowers to enroll in automatic payments. "Unfortunately, autopay errors were one of the most widespread, basic and consequential servicer errors we saw this year," CFPB Student Loan Ombudsman Julia Barnard told CNBC. In some cases, borrowers had money pulled from their bank accounts despite never consenting to autopay, Barnard said. Other autopay users saw incorrect amounts taken or were charged multiple times in the same month. In March, one borrower told the CFPB that their student loan servicer took $6,897 from their account when they only owed $1,048.

He had a $1.5 million life insurance policy, which my mom used as leverage to get a loan for his care. My mom's experience convinced me to buy a 20-year, $500,000 term life policy of my own, at $28 a month. That math looks grim, and it would look a whole lot worse if my stepfather didn't have a $1.5 million term life insurance policy. The Federal Trade Commission is announcing a finalized rule to make it easier for people to cancel subscriptions and memberships they just don’t want anymore. When the proposed rule was announced last year, Khan said, the agency got about 16,000 comments expressing how canceling subscriptions had become a headache at best. Khan and the FTC have already taken legal action against Amazon’s Prime division over accusations that it is luring customers into subscriptions that the FTC alleges are extraordinarily difficult to cancel. “Some members have the ability to cancel their membership online based on their membership type and location of their home club,” it said. Nelson said she’d be grateful for the changes Khan and the FTC are proposing.

I had recently moved to Washington, D.C., with a $40,000 starting salary, almost $45,000 of student debt and very little savings. I started with small but powerful changesDiscovering that interest calculator was a huge turning point for me because it jumpstarted my financial education. At the time, I made about $2,492 per month after taxes and deductions, and before monthly debt payments. I slowly increased my debt payments. As my income grew, I increased my extra debt payments up to $1,500 until I was debt-free.

I can usually get a couple of hours of paid work done before my daughter wakes up, then my attention shifts. We can’t afford full time childcare with our current income, even though we both need to work full-time hours. Our day care offers a sliding scale fee structure, which feels like a privilege, but it’s somehow also still unaffordable.

Finally, in your year on board the Mars simulator, you will very likely miss some of the things that I missed most. As soon as the spacecraft hatch was opened after landing from my ISS mission, I smelled grass.
