BMW CEO Oliver Zipse says a 2035 gasoline ban will hit the European auto industry. Zipse's warnings come amid fears in the auto industry of a Darwinistic price war with China. AdvertisementA "correction" of the planned 2035 gasoline vehicle ban, Zipse said, would help reduce European OEMs' reliance on China for batteries. This, Tavares said, is because automakers will have to continue to invest in both electric and gasoline vehicles, thus incurring higher costs. Including Detroit, Trump this year has pointedly attacked the most populous cities in three battleground states crucial to winning the White House: Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Trump’s attacks risk offending swing voters who don’t share his dark view of their big cities, as well as Black voters his campaign is trying to sway in what’s expected to be a close election won on the margins. Thank you, sir, for saying it.’ They want help.”“These cities,” Trump added, “it’s like living in hell.”It’s not only large cities that Trump likes to vilify. A Republican close to Trump’s campaign argued that his attacks on cities aren’t insults but are, rather, a pledge to solve problems that most people who live in those regions recognize. Courting the Black voteMichigan was the site of Trump’s memorable 2016 call for Black voters to support his candidacy.

PARIS, France — Auto giants have descended on the Paris Motor Show to showcase their latest concepts and production models, jostling to capture the public's attention with eye-catching designs and futuristic technologies. The pressure on European automakers is poised to ratchet up even further next year when emissions-reduction targets come into force. It is hoped that the Paris Motor Show can prove to be something of a turning point for Europe's auto industry, with many rolling out affordable EVs in an attempt to keep up with their Chinese competitors. The automaker welcomed visitors — including French President Emmanuel Macron — to take a close look at its Hypersquare steering wheel. Peugeot said the steering wheel's rectangular shape, which resembles a video game controller, will be in production from 2026.

DETROIT — A growing number of Americans with auto loans owe more than their vehicles are worth, according to a report Tuesday from Edmunds.com. Upside-down car loans aren't necessarily dire on their own, but a growing number of consumers being underwater is another indication of pressure on American consumers. Edmunds reports more than one in five consumers with negative equity owe more than $10,000 on their auto loans. That includes 22% of vehicle owners with negative equity who owed $10,000 or more, while 7.5% have negative equity of more than $15,000. Consumers can counter upside-down car loans by holding onto the vehicles for longer periods.

The trio of blue wall states offer promise to Vice President Harris and former President Trump. She's worked to rally union workers — a key voting bloc — around her campaign. But Loge also pointed to a newly-released Emerson College poll, which showed that Harris' union support varied by state. In the Quinnipiac poll, Michigan voters gave Trump an eight-point edge (53% to 45%) on the economy. And she's aiming to win over voters — especially union workers — in smaller cities where Trump found success in 2016.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris face off in the ABC presidential debate on Sept. 10, 2024. The previous Trump administration didn't pursue those types of consumer protections. In contrast, Democrats, including Harris, have historically supported EVs and incentives such as those under the Biden administration's signature Inflation Reduction Act. Meanwhile, Harris, if elected, can build on existing efforts of the Biden administration to deliver savings to more patients, they said. American car brands Jeep, Ram, Dodge and Chrysler are struggling under their new owner. The European-American giant Stellantis is the world's fifth-largest automaker by volume, according to S&P Global Mobility. But Stellantis did better than that. 2023 was a banner year: record sales, record profits, record free cash flow. Out of all brands in the U.S., Stellantis vehicles have some of the highest inventories of vehicles on dealer lots, according to Cox Automotive.

Tesla is expected to unveil a new service at its Robotaxi event that will impact Uber and Lyft. The ride-hailing industry has so far been dominated by two major players — Uber and Lyft — and Gawrelski said Tesla's Robotaxi could mark a new challenger jockeying for market share. Uber, Lyft, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ives said Tesla's Robotaxi event will be a historical day for the auto industry — and it will pressure Uber to seek out more partnerships. In September, Waymo announced that its Waymo One ride-hailing service would be available to users in Austin and Atlanta exclusively through the Uber app.

DETROIT — General Motors expects its 2025 adjusted earnings to be in a "similar range" to the company's results this year, CFO Paul Jacobson said Tuesday during the company's investor day. Achieving its 2024 targets as well as similar earnings next year would be quite an accomplishment. Jacobson declined to provide specific financial targets until the company formally releases its 2025 financial guidance early next year. GM's 2024 financial guidance includes anticipated capital spending of between $10.5 billion and $11.5 billion. Other than the financial targets for 2025, the automaker provided few significant updates at its investor day.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius says automakers need to hunker down if they want to beat the Chinese. Ford's CEO, meanwhile, called the Chinese auto industry an "existential threat" after a visit to the country in May. When it comes to competing in the EV market, Western automakers have been left playing a game of catch-up with the Chinese. Chinese automakers like BYD have been expanding into Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, as well as developing markets like Brazil and Mexico. The crippling trade restrictions effectively shut them out of the US auto market.
