German airline firm Lufthansa Group said Tuesday that it would add an "environmental cost surcharge" to ticket prices as soon as this week, which could be as high as 72 euros ($77) for some flights. "The surcharge is intended to cover part of the steadily rising additional costs due to regulatory environmental requirements," Lufthansa said in a statement, pointing to regulations from the European Union and International Civil Aviation Organization. All flights sold or operated by Lufthansa Group, which owns airlines including Lufthansa, Eurowings, Swiss and Edelweiss Air and Austrian Airlines, will be subject to the charge. The fee will be applied to all tickets issued from June 26 — Wednesday this week — that are for flights departing from Jan. 1, 2025, Lufthansa said.

Singapore Airlines is no longer the best airline in the world as Qatar Airways now holds the top spot, according to air transport rating firm Skytrax. Singapore Airlines is now in second position on the ranking, Skytrax announced Monday, followed by Emirates in third place which is one spot higher than last year. A series of other awards were presented by Skytrax alongside the top airlines ranking, including regional breakdowns and awards for different types of flights. Overall winner Qatar Airways was also voted the world's best business class and the top airline in the Middle East, while second-placed Singapore Airlines topped the lists for the world's best cabin crew and best first class, as well as the best airline in Asia. Delta Air Lines topped the North America regional top ten, followed by Air Canada, United Airlines, Porter Airlines and Air Transat.

Austrian Airlines A320-271N substantially damaged on the ground at Vienna Airport after reportedly colliding with a jet bridge. After the plane arrived at Vienna Airport on Saturday night, it was towed to a parking position. But a member of the ground crew forgot to place the wheel chocks and may not have activated the parking brake, the report said.

While a civil suit lodged against KLM (AIRF.PA) in the Netherlands is one of the most prominent, complaints and cases against other airlines have been mounting. Aviation emissions in Europe increased an average of 5% year-on-year between 2013 and 2019, according to the EU. Not surprisingly these moves have set alarm bells ringing in the aviation industry. “For many decision-makers, banning short-haul flights and showing support to the rail industry is an easy win to gain favor with the public, especially in Europe,” Montserrat Barriga, the ERA’s director general, told CNN. “Governments continue ignoring the biggest source of aviation emissions – long-haul flights, that remain unpriced and unregulated,” says T&E’s Dardenne. Better connectivity between intercity rail and airports would also reduce the need for short-haul flights.

BERLIN, Feb 15 (Reuters) - An IT fault at Germany's flagship carrier Lufthansa has caused massive flight delays and disruption at airlines across the group worldwide, the company said on Wednesday, adding that the fault cause was still unclear. "There is a group-wide IT system failure," a Lufthansa spokesperson told Reuters. In a tweet, Lufthansa said, "Currently, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group are affected by an IT outage. This is causing flight delays and cancellations. The IT system failure comes two days ahead of planned strikes at seven German airports expected to lead to major disruptions.
