As a citizen of three countries, the United States, Poland, and Portugal, I am acutely aware of cultural differences. My children and I live in the United States but have visited Europe several times. Children often get free admission to museumsIn the United States, visiting a museum, aquarium or zoo can easily cost more than $100. In Europe, children often receive free admission to museums or have to pay a nominal fee equivalent to a few dollars. In Europe, I found that there are often great fares for families traveling together by train or substantial discounts for children.

Walter Arlen, a Viennese musical prodigy who fled to the United States after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and became a music critic and a late-in-life composer of Holocaust and Jewish-exile remembrances in song, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 103. The death, in a hospital, was not widely reported at the time; Howard Myers, Mr. Arlen’s husband and sole survivor, confirmed it to The New York Times only recently. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Myers, longtime residents of Santa Monica, had been companions for 65 years and were married in 2008 after California’s Supreme Court upheld the legality of same-sex marriages. Even after eight decades, Mr. Arlen’s memories remained vivid — of his father being dragged off to a concentration camp; of his mother’s nervous breakdown and suicide; of his family’s home, business and bank accounts stolen by the Nazi authorities; and of witnessing the vicious murder of an older Jew by an SS guard.

During his two-day visit, Modi is expected to attend a private dinner hosted by Vladimir Putin and hold talks with the Russian president, according to India’s foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. Reducing the trade imbalance would be a “matter of priority” in Modi’s discussions with Putin, he added. Modi’s visit to Russia is also widely seen as the latest dent in efforts by Western leaders to cast Putin aside. Later that year, Putin did not attend the Group of 20 leaders’ summit in New Delhi, during which leaders delivered a consensus statement criticizing his invasion of Ukraine. Following his Russia trip, Modi will visit Austria in the Indian leader’s first visit to the European nation, according to his office.

CNN —Merih Demiral scored twice as Turkey advanced to the quarterfinals of Euro 2024 thanks to a thrilling 2-1 win over Austria on Tuesday. Demiral got his second of the game when the defender powered a header home shortly before the hour mark. Just when it seemed Turkey was on its way to the quarterfinals, Michael Gregoritsch halved the deficit to give Austria hope of rescuing the game. Demiral celebrates after his second goal against Austria. Austria looked set to level the scores when Baumgartner came rushing in at the near post with the goal gaping.

For the second match in a row, Mbappé will be wearing a mask when he takes to the pitch and the 25-year-old has described playing in it as “horrible.” So why is he wearing one? “It’s horrible playing with a mask,” Mbappé replied. It’s quite difficult playing with a mask because it limits your field of vision, your sweat clogs up and you need to let the sweat out. “The first few days I felt like I was wearing 3D glasses and it wasn’t me who was playing. Petr David Josek/APRangnick’s redemptionPerhaps the most compelling aspect of Austria’s Euro 2024 campaign has been the reminder of Rangnick’s abilities as a manager. He had various stints with German clubs such as Stuttgart, Hannover and Schalke but is best known for his work with Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and German team RB Leipzig. AdvertisementThis was Belgium at their finest, and Romania raised the level of their game in the second half to try to equalise. If Austria wanted to have any chance of qualifying to the round of 16 they had to beat Poland in their second group game. The wide areas were where Ukraine focused their attacks, and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s square pass to Mykola Shaparenko made it 1-1 in the second half. However, Samet Akaydin and Altay Bayindir’s mishap on the second goal decreased Turkey’s probability of a comeback. More off-ball runs in the second half led to the third, and by then the match was done and dusted.

Traffic deaths have spiked in certain places around the world in recent years. Austria is trying to do something about it, recently passing a law to deter 'super speeders.' European countries tend to have stricter traffic rules and, as a result, safer roads. Like the US, Austria has seen a recent uptick in road deaths. The US has seen road deaths spike recently — in 2021, traffic fatalities hit a 16-year high, and in 2023, deaths were 13.6% higher than in 2019.

“Portrait of Fräulein Lieser,” an enigmatic, long-lost 1917 painting by Gustav Klimt, sold Wednesday for 35 million euros with fees, or about $37 million, at the auction house im Kinsky in Vienna. The unsigned and unfinished work was estimated to sell for between $32 million and $53 million, before the addition of fees. The winning bid was tendered in the room by Patti Wong, the founder of the Hong Kong-based art advisory company, Patti Wong Associates. The result was remarkable, given that there are questions surrounding this Klimt portrait. The auction house said in its sale catalog that it had “not been able to clarify the precise provenance of the painting” since 1925, and the identity of the seller has not been revealed.

The U.N. aid agency serving Palestinians in Gaza faced more funding cuts Monday amid accusations that 12 of its employees were involved in the Oct. 7 attack that sparked the Israel-Hamas war. The allegations over the weekend triggered a wave of funding cuts by major donors, including the U.S., Britain and France. UNRWA employs roughly 13,000 Palestinians in Gaza and says it will be forced to halt operations within weeks if funding isn’t restored. The Palestinian Health Ministry said the boy was killed near the Israeli settlement of Tekoa. The Germans suffered a 3-2 loss to Turkey on Saturday in Nagelsmann's first home game since taking over in September. "It is about being convinced of our path and then going out and playing positive games and then going out and playing a positive (Euro) tournament," Nagelsmann told a press conference. "It is always better to win and it gets a bit turbulent when you lose, that's clear," Nagelsmann said. Nagelsmann was more concerned about going four months without a team training camp ahead of a major tournament. "Four months without (a Germany) training session is a bit much but we will have to manage," he said.

The apartment where Adolf Hitler was born is now the subject of fierce public debate. AdvertisementFor years now, Braunau am Inn, Austria, has been embroiled in a debate about how to deal with one of its most infamous buildings — the birthplace of dictator Adolf Hitler. Hitler was born in Braunau am Inn in 1889 and lived there for only a few months. When Hitler was in power during World War II, the apartment was used as an art gallery and library, per NPR. Residents say it's important for Austrians to accept the country's role in Hitler's abuses, despite some resistance at the time.

It was Angermayer who introduced Bisslinger to Thiel at the party, Thiel would later tell the FBI. After some small talk, Bisslinger made a pitch to Thiel: Thiel should travel to Russia to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. If Thiel chose to attend, Bisslinger said, Bisslinger would arrange for him to meet privately with Putin.
