What we learned from the 2024 World Series
  + stars: | 2024-10-31 | by ( Grant Brisbee | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +9 min
You’re the winner, friend, because you’ve learned something about baseball during the World Series. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series, four games to one. They might have played the sloppiest inning in World Series history, if not the sloppiest game in World Series history. It was certainly the sloppiest game from a World Series team facing elimination, and I’m not fact-checking that. The World Series was promoted like “Godzilla vs. Kong,” except one of the monsters got hurt before he could do anything.

So let’s do our best to tell you about Game 5 of the 2024 World Series — the game that crowned the Los Angeles Dodgers the champions of baseball, but also very possibly the craziest World Series clincher ever. Was that upside-down enough to qualify as the craziest World Series clincher ever? That was Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, the only postseason game in history in which all that happened. On one hand, STATS tells us that the previous two teams to do it in a World Series game both won anyway. That would be the Cubs, in Game 7 in 2016, and the Cardinals, in The David Freese Game (Game 6) in 2011.

For every team faced with an early demise in the World Series, that’s the vision: one more day of summer to play with your friends. “We lost Game 3 and we said, ‘Hey, who doesn’t want to make history?’ I know I love making history. Eight years ago with the Chicago Cubs, Rizzo played another Game 5 on Halloween eve, needing a win to extend the World Series. Three of them were new to this World Series and covered seven innings. He lived the fantasy of every New York-born kid of his generation: a shortstop in pinstripes, starring in the World Series.

NEW YORK — Anthony Volpe’s jersey was caked in dirt as he fielded grounders at shortstop before the ninth inning of Game 4 of the World Series. The New York Yankees were on the brink of a victory that would keep their season alive. He launched a go-ahead grand slam in the third inning, giving the Yankees a 5-2 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers. “Definitely number one.”Yankee Stadium hadn’t erupted like it did Tuesday in 15 years, not since Game 6 of the 2009 World Series. NEW YORK — The hometown kid came to the rescue on Tuesday, saving the New York Yankees from elimination in the World Series. Freddie Freeman set a record in defeat, becoming the first player to hit homers in six consecutive World Series games, a streak that began with Atlanta in 2021. Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers never got much going and the Yankees pulled away with a late offensive explosion. In 19 2/3 innings against the Yankees bullpen, they’ve scored six — and just one since their furious comeback in Game 1.

Volpe gave the Yankees a lead in this series for the first time since Game 1. From there, the bullpen hung tough and held off the Dodgers long enough to force Game 5 on Wednesday in the Bronx. The Yankees became only the fourth team in baseball history and the first since 1970 to avoid a sweep in the World Series when down, 3-0. From there, the Dodgers appeared on the verge of the sweep, before Volpe took Dodgers reliever Daniel Hudson deep. Before the game, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts discussed the importance of length from two rookie pitchers, Ben Casparius and Landon Knack.

“Four more wins!”After a 4-2 victory on Monday over the New York Yankees in Game 3 of the World Series, the Dodgers are on the doorstep of a championship, one far different than the title marred by COVID-19 restrictions in 2020. The first World Series game at Yankee Stadium since 2009 ended as the last two did in Chavez Ravine, with the Dodgers exultant and the Yankees lamenting missed chances. No team in World Series history has overcome a 3-0 deficit. “Hopefully we can go be this amazing story and shock the world,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “If he is able to play, willing to play, he’s going to play,” Roberts said on Sunday afternoon.

After his final swing in a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the World Series, he only had to trot. He swatted a 10th-inning walk-off grand slam on Friday night, a slight improvement on Gibson’s legendary walk-off in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty kept the Yankees off the board until Giancarlo Stanton hit a monstrous, two-run homer in the sixth. They are the second MLB team to earn an invitation to the league championship series and, yes, they’re aware of the other: the New York Mets. In the 55 seasons of LCS play, this will be just the third to feature both the Yankees and Mets. You might remember the others: 1999, when only the Yankees won, and 2000, when New York City had the World Series all to itself. We’re still hungry — at least in New York, where the World Series seemed like a birthright in the years before expansion.
