Santiago, Chile CNN —How do we mourn the death of one solitary tree, when whole forests burn down? I planted it almost three quarters of a century ago, when I was just 7 years old. If I never kept that promise to my tree, it was never far from my mind as the years passed. In all likelihood, that tree, planted by me as a child, has now been reduced to cinders. It’s a reminder to pay homage and give thanks to each and every tree that succumbs to this climate debacle.

VIÑA DEL MAR, Chile (AP) — Chilean prosecutors on Wednesday released more details about the death of former President Sebastian Piñera, saying he drowned after the helicopter he was piloting crashed into a lake. Piñera died on Tuesday after a flight over Lake Ranco, more than 560 miles (900 kilometers) south of Santiago. As more details of his death were released, tributes hailing him as a champion of democracy continued to pour in. The public can start paying their last respects to Piñera on Wednesday night, with a state funeral to be held on Friday. Piñera served two terms — from 2010 to 2014 and again from 2018 to 2022.

There has almost been too much to read since Henry Kissinger, the former national security adviser and secretary of state who served under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, died on Wednesday. These bombings, which destabilized the country, played a role in the rise of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, who went on to kill approximately 2 million people during his four-year stint in power. Kissinger was also an architect of the U.S. effort to undermine the democratically elected socialist government of Salvador Allende in Chile. In the wake of the 1973 coup d’état that installed Gen. Augusto Pinochet at the head of a military dictatorship, Kissinger also pushed the United States to back the new regime, which killed, tortured or imprisoned tens of thousands of Chileans. “I think we should understand our policy — that however unpleasant they act, this government is better for us than Allende was,” Kissinger said to his deputies, according to declassified transcripts, in the weeks after the coup.

MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. has expelled a former Chilean Army officer accused of torturing and killing folk singer Victor Jara during the country's bloody 1973 coup. Pedro Barrientos had emigrated to Florida in 1990, the same year the bloody dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet came to an end. This year, he was stripped of his U.S. citizenship after it was found he concealed information about his Chilean military service during his immigration proceedings. Jara, a popular singer and university professor, was a fervent supporter of socialist President Salvador Allende. Homeland Security Investigations said that Barrientos was removed Thursday on a flight from Miami and taken into custody by Chilean law enforcement officials upon his arrival in the South American country.

Joan Jara, a British-born dancer and instructor who dedicated herself to finding justice for her husband, Victor Jara, a popular Chilean folk singer and songwriter who was killed during the military coup d’état that brought Gen. Augusto Pinochet Ugarte to dictatorial power in 1973, died on Nov. 12 in Santiago, Chile. Her death was announced by the Victor Jara Foundation, a human rights initiative she established. Mr. Jara, who was also a theater director and poet, sang about poverty and injustice. Mr. Jara was a visible supporter of Salvador Allende, the Marxist who was elected president of Chile in 1970. In May 2016, I led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Chile, where we visited the Museum of Memory and Human Rights. Pablo Larraín’s black-and-white horror spoof “El Conde” is founded on a ferocious sight gag: the former dictator Augusto Pinochet soaring into the night on a quest for human blood. This Pinochet, played with imperious cruelty by Jaime Vadell, was once a rebel-eating French royalist who sailed to South America in search of fresh meat. It’s a comic premise — what, is this part of the “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” extended universe? Larraín’s version of the man did that, too, with just one tweak: He blends his victims into a smoothie. And Larraín has resurrected him to drag him into the light.

Dread of what could happen to me, to my family and friends, dread at what was about to happen to my country. Not only did General Pinochet end our dreams; he ushered in an era of brutal human rights violations. During his military rule, from 1973 to 1990, more than 40,000 people were subjected to physical and psychological torture. More than a thousand men and women are still among the desaparecidos, the disappeared, with no funerals and no graves.
