Former billionaire investor Sung Kook "Bill" Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant's lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. Hwang had asked for no prison, forfeiture or restitution, and to remain free on bail while he appealed his conviction. James said his low risk of committing more crimes meant a lengthy prison term served no purpose.

Prosecutors on Tuesday are set to tell a judge whether they think the criminal hush money case against President-elect Donald Trump should head to sentencing, as planned, or be dismissed following his electoral victory, as his lawyers have requested. Those records related to a $130,000 payment his then-personal lawyer Michael Cohen made shortly before the 2016 election to porn star Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about a purported one-time sexual tryst with Trump a decade earlier. Judge Juan Merchan had been expected to rule on a dismissal request by Trump's lawyers on Nov. 12 at the earliest. But on the heels of Trump's election win, the DA's office told Merchan they wanted him to delay his ruling, to give them time to determine how that victory affected the case. Merchan gave them one week to do so.

Bannon is facing numerous charges from the Manhattan district attorney's office for allegedly defrauding donors who believed they were giving money to build a wall at the southern U.S. border. "We’re not changing it again," Newbauer told both sides including Bannon, who attended virtually. Bannon was indicted in the case in Sept. 2022 and hit with charges including money laundering, scheming to defraud, and conspiracy. Three other members of the group, including Kolfage, have already been convicted of charges related to the scheme. A Massachusetts woman passed herself as a nurse and dispensed thousands of doses of phony Botox and other fillers that had been smuggled into the United States, authorities said. Kendra Panteah, 37, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of kidnapping not resulting in death in federal court in Albuquerque, according to court records. Another man, Gilbert John Jr., fatally stabbed the victim, the prosecutor's office said. Panteah said the two other people got out as she drove to Gallup with the man still locked in the trunk, according to the plea agreement. They stopped at Bass Lake, which is where the victim began breaking out of the trunk and John stabbed him repeatedly with a machete, Panteah and prosecutors said. A 15-year-old was charged Thursday with the murders of his parents and three siblings and in the attempted murder of another sibling who survived Monday’s attack at the family’s Washington state home. Two co-owners of a Colorado funeral home where around 190 decomposing bodies were found last year pleaded guilty Thursday to federal fraud charges, officials said. Some of the remains found were of people who died in 2019, four years earlier, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. A Georgia grand jury indicted a teenage boy and his father on dozens of charges, including murder, in connection with a mass shooting last month that killed four people at Apalachee High School, officials said Thursday.
