CNN —A rare painting from René Magritte’s famous “L’empire des lumières” series is estimated to sell for more than $95 million at Christie’s New York this fall, a sum that would break the Surrealist artist’s record at auction and represent a major win for the auction house after softened sales across the industry. “L’empire des lumières,” from 1954, is one of the 27 paintings in which Magritte explored light by painting a sunlit sky above a darkened street scene. René Magritte's L'empire des lumières Courtesy of Chrstie’sThe present painting comes from the estate of the late Mica Ertegun, an interior designer who was married to Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records and a prolific art collector. “But of all the works she lived with, Magritte’s ‘L’empire des lumières’ most nearly captures her aesthetic philosophy in its balance and restraint,” Max Carter, Christie’s vice chairman of 20th and 21st century art, said in a statement. Last week, the auction house revealed it is acquiring Gooding & Company, a collector car auctioneer, 17 years after exiting the car market.

5 Minutes That Will Make You Love Don Cherry

Of all the musicians we’ve featured in this series, Don Cherry might be the most adventurous. Though with Cherry, there was a sense that he didn’t want to shift the genre as a whole. Cherry grew up in a musical family; his grandmother played piano for silent films, and his mother played piano at home. Though Cherry earned favor as a member of Coleman’s band and a featured player on the albums “Something Else!!! Then, on the 1985 album “Home Boy (Sister Out),” Cherry turned his attention to Paris.

“While falsely contending over the last several months that the Oates Trust wanted to maintain ownership in WOE, John Oates and the Co-Trustees engaged in the ultimate partnership betrayal," Hall said in a declaration. The lawsuit contends that Hall opened an arbitration process on Nov. 9 against Oates and the other defendants in the lawsuit, Oates’ wife, Aimee Oates, and Richard Flynn, in their roles as co-trustees of Oates’ trust. Primary Wave has already owned “significant interest” in Hall and Oates’ song catalog for more than 15 years. “I am deeply troubled by the deterioration of my relationship with, and trust in, John Oates,” Hall said in the declaration. Hall & Oates was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and its latest album, “Home for Christmas,” was released in 2006.

1 hits like “Rich Girl, “Maneater” and “She’s Gone” in the 1970s and ’80s, followed by a more recent cultural resurgence, Daryl Hall and John Oates have long been one of pop music’s most celebrated duos. Now, the discord is undeniable as Hall, 77, has filed a lawsuit in Nashville against Oates, 75, the partner with whom he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. The lore of Hall and Oates dates back to 1967, when the musicians were students at Temple University. A few weeks later, Oates’s band split up after two of its members joined the military, and Hall invited Oates to play guitar for his group. Later on, they started writing music together, landing a deal with Atlantic Records in 1972 that propelled them to pop stardom.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In the first few minutes on the phone with The Associated Press, Chappell Roan shared a revealing fact about herself. Born and raised in Missouri, Roan left the state for Hollywood not long after being discovered on YouTube by Atlantic Records. Roan, like Rodrigo, has a knack for candor in theatrical, cheeky pop songwriting — even when the truth is embarrassing — emphasized by her vocal range. ROAN: It's evolving constantly, but more recently it’s been more of a drag project, especially now that I’m (on) tour. I'm really uncomfortable by sex scenes in movies, or when people flirt with me.

The two companies had challenged the lower court's decision that they may owe copyright damages that accrued prior to three years before plaintiff Sherman Nealy sued them. Nealy has argued that his Miami record label Music Specialist owns the rights to the 1984 song "Jam the Box" by Tony Butler, also known as Pretty Tony. Nealy said he did not learn of the alleged copyright violations until 2016, and requested damages for copyright infringement that he said started as early as 2008. Circuit Court of Appeals limited copyright damages to the three-year period before a lawsuit is filed. The case has drawn interest from music industry trade groups including the Recording Industry Association of America and National Music Publishers' Association, which also encouraged the court to take up the case.

On ‘Daisy Jones & the Six,’ musicians worked to establish a sound in keeping with the show’s 1970s setting that still felt fresh enough for today’s listeners. In the series “Daisy Jones & the Six” on Amazon’s Prime Video, a Los Angeles rock band writes and records their seminal 1976 album. The group, their rise to stardom and their mysterious breakup are all a work of fiction—but the 11-track “Aurora” is real. Since the album’s release in early March, its songs have been streamed more than 30 million times. “Aurora,” released by Atlantic Records, serves as a companion piece to the show, which is inspired in part by the lore around Fleetwood Mac.

Jon Seaton is a junior defensive lineman for Elon University in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision. Since NIL rules were implemented, he's earned over $250,000 through deals with Meta and Dr. Pepper. "I actually had no clue at that point where I was going to feed myself from," Seaton said. Tim Curran told Insider he has avoided small deals for Seaton worth $25 to $50, which has pushed up the value of each sponsored post the athlete makes. Seaton believes that NIL could help student-athletes like him, who aren't pursuing careers as professional athletes, become business leaders.
A representative for Roberta Flack announced Monday that the Grammy-winning musician has ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and can no longer sing. The progressive disease “has made it impossible to sing and not easy to speak,” Flack’s manager Suzanne Koga said in a release. Flack also plans to publish a children’s book co-written with Tonya Bolden, “The Green Piano: How Little Me Found Music,” that month. Flack had a stroke in 2016 and spoke to The Associated Press a little over two years later about returning to performing. “I could sing any number of songs that I’ve recorded through the years, easily, I could sing them, but I’m going to pick those songs that move me,” Flack said.

Rolling Loud New York is scheduled to take place at Citi Field in Queens, New York this weekend, but three drill rappers initially expected to perform have been axed from the lineup. The NYPD’s actions mirror what happened at Rolling Loud New York in 2019, when the department banned 22Gz and fellow drill rapper Pop Smoke from hitting the stage. Neither the NYPD, Mayor Adams or Rolling Loud have released an official statement. However, the organizers of the festival graciously agreed to pay Sha Ek for the canceled performance.
