Designer Zac Posen — now creative director at Gap Inc., at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in March 2024. Danny Moloshok/ReutersSince 2014, the Gap brand has nearly halved its presence in North America, going from 968 stores in the market to 472 as of February. It makes up about 20% of overall Gap Inc. revenue, while Old Navy accounts for more than half. Before Gap, Posen was on track for a similar trajectory to Mizrahi’s. They started by redefining the positioning of each brand: Gap as a pop culture brand.

Retail credit card interest rates reach record high

Here’s one way to think about these kinds of high-rate burdens:Say you sign up for a retailer’s card the day you make a $1,000 purchase. Or, consider that the interest you’ll pay in that same scenario will wipe out the $200 you “saved” after just nine months of making minimum required payments. The lowest rate on a retail card that the study found was 10%, on the Amazon Secured Card. “There are narrow circumstances in which retail cards can work for you. For a loyal shopper who pays in full and avoids interest, that’s a compelling value proposition,” he said.

Gap raised its full-year profit outlook on Thursday after seeing better-than-expected results at its largest brand, Old Navy. The apparel company's fiscal second quarter results were released earlier than planned after the company "inadvertently" posted them to its website and then removed them, a Gap spokesperson told CNBC. Gap posted earnings of $206 million, or 54 cents per share, compared with $117 million, or 32 cents per share, a year earlier. The company's second-quarter results didn't blow away expectations, but are solid improvements from where the company was a year ago. Its gross margin came in better than forecast at 42.6%, ahead of the 40.8% that analysts had expected, according to StreetAccount.

Bargain retailers like Walmart and Costco have benefitted, as shown by the retailing industry’s recent slew of first-quarter earnings releases. Sales at its stores open at least a year increased 3.8% in the quarter from the same time last year. Which means that Americans are still spending, but selectively, and that “value shopping” means different things to different people. “A sizable segment of them are focused on value, however, that doesn’t directly correlate to a low price. The departure of the company’s chief product officer adds to a “wall of worry” Raymond James analysts said. Choe joined Lululemon more than seven years ago and became chief product officer in 2018, according to her LinkedIn. “I think that there’s a lot of people out there who believe that she was the person behind the scenes and was the most instrumental to Lululemon’s success,” Nikic said. Lulu has been “hyper aware” of dupe culture, Nikki Neuburger, then its Chief Brand Officer, previously said in an interview with CNN Business. However, Lululemon wasn’t stocked enough in these smaller sizes, which could have led these younger shoppers to competitors, Nikic said.

Take Gap and Foot Locker — two unlikely winners that posted results on Thursday. Under CEO Mary Dillon, Foot Locker has worked to change its stores, where it does more than 80% of its sales. It has tried to create not only a better shopping experience for consumers but also a better place for its critical brand partners. Instead of two walls of shoes with competing brands mixed together, Foot Locker is changing its fleet so the brands have their own unique displays. With refreshed stores and better product displays, consumers are converting more, too, and paying full price — even Foot Locker's lower-income shopper.

It's what I refer to as my famous last words before I applied for a retail job at a clothing store after working in corporate for 25 years. Almost immediately, I launched my business, Boldly Speaking, leaning on my speaker skills and years of experience with ERGs. I ended up working at an Athleta store in NYC, and I'm glad I decided to join that team. What sticks with me most is the confidence and joy I've found during a time filled with so much doubt and uncertainty. I landed a seasonal brand associate role and felt like a kid in a candy store.

The sheer number of sustainability certifications for the travel and tourism industry is almost overwhelming and certainly confusing. Certified B Corp enterprises must meet standards set by B Lab, a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit founded in 2006 that awards for-profit companies with certifications for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. Globally, there are only 62 certified B Corps in the travel industry and 76 in accommodation and hospitality. “When you see the B Corp logo, I know it’s been at least semi-vetted,” Ms. Dohoney, 64, said.

After Gap 's earnings report topped Wall Street's expectations on Thursday, CEO Richard Dickson told CNBC's Jim Cramer how his company is managing to turn its business around. "We've been reigniting this brand and drawing on what the brand was so special in the first place, really taking on trend products and amplifying it in new ways that only Gap can," he said. "We're using music, we're using fashion as entertainment, and we're taking basic product—linen, denim, wovens, pants—and we're amplifying the narrative around these categories and driving share growth." In addition to its namesake brand, Gap owns brands including Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. "Zac's creative expertise, his cultural clarity, it's consistently evolved American fashion," Dickson said.

Gap’s gross margin improved to 41.3%, up 3.9 percentage points from the year-ago period, bringing the measure of profitability higher than where it was in 2019. The company, which also owns Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta, on Thursday reported that comparable sales fell 2% in its quarter ended Oct. 28. That was much better than the 7.4% decline that Wall Street analysts polled by Visible Alpha had expected. Net income of $218 million was more than three times the number analysts had penciled in. Gap’s shares jumped 15% in after-hours trading following the company’s earnings call on Thursday.

Gap shares soar on Old Navy brand renewal, controlled inventory
  + stars: | 2023-11-17 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Comparable sales at Old Navy rose 1% in the third quarter, the first increase in 10 quarters. "Old Navy gained market share, an encouraging early proof point that work to improve both product assortment and brand messaging" were driving results, Gap Chief Financial Officer Katrina O'Connell said on Thursday following the earnings. Gap's struggles with outdated inventory at its namesake brand and Old Navy had pushed customers to look for newer and fresher styles at rivals like Shein and Amazon.com (AMZN.O). Jefferies analysts said new CEO Richard Dickson's prior experience in reinvigorating brands like Barbie at Mattel (MAT.O) could bring a lift to the Old Navy banner. The apparel maker's executives also alluded to a "longer recovery" time for Banana Republic and Athleta, which has seen "product misfires" and weak "retail execution".

Shares in the U.S. apparel company leapt over 30% on Friday morning, a day after it unveiled third-quarter results. That reaction looks overdone, considering how overall net sales of $3.8 billion are still down 7% compared to last year, and earnings fell year-on-year. Same-store sales at sub-brand Old Navy for the quarter were up 1% year-on-year, the first quarterly increase in over two years. The company might even use that tailwind to revive its scrapped plans to separate Old Navy into a stand-alone company.
