Read previewNvidia cofounder and CEO Jensen Huang is in Taiwan this week, where he's getting rockstar reception and boosting the stock market. The drills started on Thursday, but Taiwan's stock market was little changed over the period. "In this case, the AI equity theme, physical investment in AI, and the wider upturn in electronic component demand are driving robust Taiwanese growth and the strong stock market performance," wrote Green. He added that an outright invasion of Taiwan by China is "very unlikely" due to high military and economic risk. "If the macro backdrop is positive and China remains far from achieving 'fortress-like' economic conditions, future sell-offs may offer attractive buying opportunities," Green wrote.

The race to put artificial intelligence everywhere is taking a detour through the good old laptop computer. Microsoft on Monday introduced a new kind of computer designed for artificial intelligence. The machines, Microsoft says, will run A.I. systems on chips and other gear inside the computers so they are faster, more personal and more private. The new computers, called Copilot+ PC, will allow people to use A.I.

Microsoft announces new PCs with AI chips from Qualcomm

Copilot+ PCs with AMD and Intel chips will follow, Microsoft said during a press keynote address on its campus in Redmond, Washington. AI models will be able to generate images based on written descriptions as well as drawings. Microsoft is banking on Qualcomm's energy-efficient Arm -based chips that can handle AI models to defend its Windows franchise. The new PCs can run some AI models locally without an internet connection. Microsoft has had little success in getting people to adopt Arm-based Windows computers, which haven't always performed as well as PCs running Intel or AMD chips.

Meta will partner with external hardware companies, including Lenovo, Microsoft and Asus, to build virtual reality headsets using the company's Meta Horizon operating system, the company said Monday. The move will create new hardware devices that run on the same operating system and software as Meta's current first-party virtual reality hardware, such as the Quest 3 and Quest Pro. The move further defines the fault lines of the virtual reality hardware market, months after Apple released its $3,500 virtual reality headset called Vision Pro in January. According to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who shared the news in an Instagram video Monday, the announcement essentially recreates the Android versus iOS dynamic in smartphones — only for virtual reality headsets. Meta Horizon is based on a version of Android, allowing for easier ports of apps from phones to virtual reality.

Chinas Realme closing in on market leaders Xiaomi, Samsung, yet hurdles loom in treacherous market where many stumbled. Under the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware, which was approved by the government in May, India will provide companies incentives for goods manufactured in the country. The Indian IT hardware market is expected to grow to $22.77 billion in 2027 from $15.52 billion in 2022. "The IT Hardware manufacturing sector faces the lack of a level playing field vis-à-vis competing nations ... There is need for a mechanism to compensate for the manufacturing disabilities vis-à-vis other major manufacturing economies," according to the ministry.

The new silicon includes Qualcomm's X Elite chip for PCs and laptops and the Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for high-end Android phones. The speed at which a smartphone chip processes AI models could represent a new feature battleground between high-end Android phones from companies such as Asus, Sony and OnePlus versus Apple's iPhones, which are also getting new AI features on an annual basis. Now, Qualcomm said, its smartphone chip can handle the bigger AI models used in generative AI — as many as 10 billion parameters. That's still less than some of the biggest AI models, such as OpenAI's GPT3, which has about 175 billion parameters. Qualcomm executives said these kinds of AI models can run on devices if the chips are fast enough and equipped with enough memory.

But multiple memory chips are needed to support each GPU or CPU, so making memory requires more fab space. Micron says construction in New York will begin at the end of 2024 and chip production there will start in 2027. By 1980, it was building its first fab and a year later was pumping out a revolutionarily small 64K DRAM chip. Gatzemeier, who joined as an intern in 1997, explained the two main kinds of memory: DRAM and NAND. When it comes to the biggest type of memory, DRAM, Samsung is by far the leader, followed by SK Hynix and then Micron.
