CNN —A gold watch gifted to the captain of a ship which rescued more than 700 passengers and crew from the Titanic has sold for a record-breaking £1.56 million ($1.97 million). The gold pocket watch was inscribed with a message from the three surviving widows to mark their "heartfelt gratitude and appreciation" for Captain Rostron. The previous record for a Titanic-related object sold at auction was also a pocket watch, which sold for £1.175 million ($1.485 million) earlier this year. For auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, the latest sale is a sign that interest in the story of the Titanic shows no sign of slowing down. The watch was sold to a private collector in the US and the sale figure includes fees and taxes paid by the buyer, according to PA media.

Richard William Smith, a British businessman, scrawled a message in pencil to a Mrs Olive Dakin in Norwich, England. The card, written in pencil by Richard William Smith, was sent from Cork, Ireland on April 11 1912. Kindest regards, R.W.S.”Andrew Aldridge is the managing director of Henry Aldridge & Son, a UK auctioneer specializing in Titanic memorabilia, which is selling the item. The gold watch worn by John Jacob Astor IV, a member of the wealthy Astor family, sold for £1.175 million ($1.51 million) – a record for Titanic memorabilia, according to the auction house.

FTX's former head of Europe bought the most expensive Titanic relic ever auctioned. The gold watch sold for $1.5 million, and belonged to John Jacob Astor IV. Gruhn is a German crypto law veteran who formerly served as the head of FTX Europe. Gruhn is now readying the launch of a new crypto trading venue called Perpetuals, and said he plans to restart FTX Europe under a different name. "From all the facts it was clear that FTX Europe did not and couldn't know about the fraud from SBF," he said.

The violin itself was sold for $1.7 million via the same auction house in 2013 and is the highest-selling item from the ship ever. The valise belonging to Titanic bandmember and orchestra leader Wallace Hartley, which held the violin he played as the Titanic sank, is also for sale. The watch was among the personal effects found with Astor’s body after the Titanic sank, according to the auction house. In 1935, Vincent gave the watch as a christening gift to the infant son of William Dobbyn IV, John Jacob Astor’s executive secretary, according to the auction house.
