CNN —A gold watch gifted to the captain of a ship which rescued more than 700 passengers and crew from the Titanic has sold for a record-breaking £1.56 million ($1.97 million). The gold pocket watch was inscribed with a message from the three surviving widows to mark their "heartfelt gratitude and appreciation" for Captain Rostron. The previous record for a Titanic-related object sold at auction was also a pocket watch, which sold for £1.175 million ($1.485 million) earlier this year. For auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, the latest sale is a sign that interest in the story of the Titanic shows no sign of slowing down. The watch was sold to a private collector in the US and the sale figure includes fees and taxes paid by the buyer, according to PA media.

Ms. Harris dropped in on each one, in descending order of price and intimacy, as donors enjoyed peach mimosas and shrimp cocktails before her remarks in the grand ballroom. The Harris campaign is immediately being more intentional at courting this community, dispatching aides to meet with affinity groups representing venture capitalists and the cryptocurrency industry. And she has hired additional fund-raising aides with ties to the Bay Area who helped organize Sunday’s event. Ms. Harris also has connections that Mr. Biden simply does not. Josh Becker, who represents much of Silicon Valley in the California Senate and is close with many industry heavyweights, said he had hosted Ms. Harris in his home two decades ago.

In three interviews broadcast on Sunday morning, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican vice-presidential nominee, repeated his description of Democrats as “anti-family,” defended former President Donald J. Trump’s abortion policies and suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris was racist. He added that the idea of giving children the right to vote but letting their parents have control of the votes, which he floated in 2021, had been a “thought experiment” that he hadn’t really meant. “I want us to have more families. And obviously sometimes it doesn’t work out, sometimes for medical reasons, sometimes because you don’t meet the right person. But the point is that our country has become anti-family in its public policy.”He told ABC News of the idea of giving parents more votes through their children, “If it was a policy proposal, I would have made the policy proposal in my two years in the United States Senate.”

Where Tim Walz Stands on the Issues

Tim Walz of Minnesota, the newly announced running mate to Vice President Kamala Harris, has worked with his state’s Democratic-controlled Legislature to enact an ambitious agenda of liberal policies: free college tuition for low-income students, free meals for schoolchildren, legal recreational marijuana and protections for transgender people. “You don’t win elections to bank political capital,” Mr. Walz wrote last year about his approach to governing. “You win elections to burn political capital and improve lives.”Republicans have slammed these policies as big-government liberalism and accused Mr. Walz of taking a hard left turn since he represented a politically divided district in Congress years ago. Here is an overview of where Mr. Walz stands on some key issues. AbortionMr. Walz signed a bill last year that guaranteed Minnesotans a “fundamental right to make autonomous decisions” about reproductive health care on issues such as abortion, contraception and fertility treatments.

She has won three medals at the Paris Games and is aiming for a fourth, on balance beam. Lee, now 21, entered the Tokyo Olympics as a strong contender for a gold medal on uneven bars, and perhaps silver in the all-around, behind Simone Biles. But when Biles’s late withdrawal created a spot, Lee capitalized with a strong, steady performance to win the all-around gold, the most coveted title in gymnastics. She was frustrated that, after securing bronze on bars, she did not win the title she had aimed to win. By the time the Olympic trials ended in June, Lee was the second-best all-around gymnast competing, behind only Biles.

Lee was in tears in Tokyo because she had come to win gold on the bars, her signature event. Qiu Qiyuan of China, the world champion on the uneven bars in 2023, was second, with 15.066. Here is what else to know: The uneven bars final will be begin at 3:40 p.m. Paris time. China has two gymnasts in the bars final, Qiu Qiyuan and Zhang Yihan. They have a chance to win their country’s first medal in women’s gymnastics at the Paris Games.

Sunisa Lee, the only American gymnast to qualify for Sunday’s uneven bars final, earned the chance to compete in Paris after a frightening year. By the time the Olympic trials ended in June, Lee was the second-best all-around gymnast competing, behind only Biles. In pursuit of that uneven bars title, Lee has been training a difficult skill that no gymnast has competed before, taking a release move called a Jaeger and adding a full twist.

ETSimone Biles is looking to add yet another Olympic gold medal to her growing collection at the Paris Games. This time, she will compete in the vault final, where — once again — she is the favorite to win. If she does win, it will be her seventh Olympic gold medal and 10th over all. Andrade won the vault gold medal at the Tokyo Games after Biles pulled out of several events with a mental block. She won the team gold medal with the U.S. squad this week and also won gold on the floor exercise in Tokyo.

When Nemour performed it in competition in June, it produced the highest score recorded on the bars since the Tokyo Olympics. But while she may wow fans in her home country at these Games, she won’t be doing it under the French flag. Nemour’s father had an Algerian passport because his parents had been born in the country, and Nemour was entitled to one as well. At the world championships in 2023, Nemour won the silver medal on the uneven bars. She didn’t realize what the result meant for African gymnastics, she said, until she started receiving a deluge of messages and interview requests.

The competition began with a commanding lead for Biles, who scored 15.766 for her namesake Yurchenko double pike, the hardest vault in the world. And Sunisa Lee, the defending Olympic all-around champion, trailed after the first three rotations but came back to win the bronze with a solid performance on floor. With Andrade at her heels, Biles took to the floor to perform the last routine of the competition. Since the first Olympic all-around competition in women’s gymnastics in 1952, only nine gymnasts had ever managed to win two medals of any color.

The team final on Tuesday will be an important stop. The three other gymnasts competing in the team final — including the defending all-around champion Sunisa Lee — are all competing at their second Summer Games. How it works: The team final consists of three gymnasts competing on all events — and every score counts — so there is no room for error. Biles rebounds: Biles finished first in the all-around in team qualifying, despite dealing with pain in her left calf that her coach, Cécile Canqueteau-Landi, said had been nagging Biles for weeks. Americans dominate: The U.S. team finished more than 5 points ahead of the second-place Italy in team qualifying, with China and Brazil very close behind, in third and fourth.

Former President Donald J. Trump, in an interview broadcast Monday night, repeated his recent assertion that Christians will never have to vote again if they vote for him this November, and brushed aside multiple requests to walk back or clarify the statement. Mr. Trump said last Friday to a gathering of Christian conservatives: “I love you. We’ll have it fixed so good, you’re not going to have to vote.”His interviewer on Monday, Fox News’s Laura Ingraham, noted that Democrats have highlighted that quote as evidence that Mr. Trump would end elections, and urged Mr. Trump to rebut what she called a “ridiculous” criticism. But Mr. Trump declined to do so, repeating a pattern he frequently employs in which he makes a provocative statement that can be interpreted in varying ways, and makes no attempt to quiet the uproar. This comment was especially striking, given his attempts to overturn the 2020 election and his shattering of other democratic norms.

When President Biden said he would drop out of the presidential race just over a week ago, throwing his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, a jolt of energy instantly excited a beleaguered Democratic base. The party rallied around Ms. Harris, as upbeat memes and positive statistics for Democrats over the past week abounded: $200 million in contributions, a litany of tantalizing vice-presidential options and a rash of improved polling. Ms. Harris now faces harder tasks in the coming weeks: maintaining that enthusiasm as the initial excitement fades, as former President Donald J. Trump and his campaign sharpen their attacks against her. This week alone has important mile markers. Democratic delegates could begin voting to virtually nominate Ms. Harris as early as Thursday, the date the Democratic National Committee said they were expected to do so if only one candidate emerged.

Simone Biles competing in the vault during the finals of the gymnastics team competition at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Five years later, at the U.S. Classic in 2021, she introduced the second two-flip vault: the Yurchenko double pike. The Yurchenko double pike starts with a roundoff onto the springboard and a back handspring onto the vaulting table. That’s the “double pike” part. The move requires a preposterous amount of power coming off the vaulting table and allows hardly any margin for error.

Mr. Vance’s stumbles have come after a remarkable two weeks when Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt and then rallied the party — and even some skeptics — behind him. Then, in a sense, Mr. Trump and Mr. Vance became the victims of that success. Some of Mr. Vance’s comments on some conservative podcasts veered into serious policy critiques that trucked in antisemitic tropes and racial stereotypes. The Harris campaign has been able to keep the spotlight on the momentum behind her fledgling presidential run — and away from Mr. Trump. Still, the Harris campaign was happy with the bruises they had inflicted.

With Vice President Kamala Harris being eyed as a potential replacement for President Biden on the Democratic ticket, her stances on key issues will be scrutinized by both parties and the nation’s voters. She has a long record in politics: as district attorney of San Francisco, as attorney general of California, as a senator, as a presidential candidate and as vice president. Here is an overview of where she stands. AbortionMs. Harris supports legislation that would protect the right to abortion nationally, as Roe v. Wade did before it was overturned in 2022, in Dobbs v.
