The IRS plans to issue automatic “special payments” of up to $1,400 to 1 million taxpayers starting later this month, the agency announced last week. The payments will go to individuals who did not claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit on their tax returns for that year and who are eligible for the money. “Looking at our internal data, we realized that one million taxpayers overlooked claiming this complex credit when they were actually eligible,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement. Eligible taxpayers can expect to receive the money either by direct deposit or a paper check in the mail. Direct deposit payments will go to taxpayers who have current bank account information on file with the IRS.

The U.S. Agriculture Department must take immediate action to secure the benefits cards from which low-income families are being robbed of grocery funds, six Democratic senators urged in a letter. But unlike consumer credit and debit cards, SNAP EBT cards lack security features such as microchips or tap-to-pay technology. “It’s unacceptable that hackers and scam artists are stealing food benefits that low-income families rely on to put food on the table,” Wyden said in a statement to NBC News. The Lindaburys' debt to Atrium Health from 2009 grew over time to include almost $100,000 in interest charges. Americans owe $220 billion in medical debt, according to KFF, a nonprofit health policy research, polling and news organization. Research conducted by the Urban Institute found that medical debt is more common in the South and among people in low-income ZIP codes. In 2021, the institute found that three North Carolina counties were among the 10 U.S. counties whose residents held the most medical debt. Recognizing the burden that medical debt places on consumers, some states have moved in recent years to remedy the problem.

Business executives, health insurance industry employees and law enforcement officers have reported facing threats and harassment following the capture this week of the man charged with fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The attorney for the suspect, Luigi Mangione, 26, an Ivy League graduate, has said Mangione intends to plead not guilty to all charges. Social media posts Wednesday showed images of “wanted” posters put up in Manhattan that featured photos of the CEOs of at least two health insurance companies. One of the companies named in the posters declined to comment, while the other did not respond to a request. “I had another one say, ‘This is why y’all’s CEO was shot, and if you’re not careful, you’re going to be next,’” the employee said.

US health insurance: Frustrations with care denials

Americans’ pent-up fury with the nation’s health insurance industry burst into the spotlight last week after the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in midtown Manhattan. They flooded social media with posts and videos about denials of medical treatments and claims, as well as other frustrations with the complicated system. The majority of insured US adults had at least one health insurance problem – including denial of claims – in the span of a year, according to a survey released in June 2023 by KFF, a nonprofit health policy research group. Still, 81% of respondents rated their health insurance as “excellent” or “good,” the same survey found. Roughly 41% of adults had debt caused by medical or dental bills, according to a 2022 KFF Health Care Debt Survey.

The data comes from GoodRx's new Weight Loss Medications Tracker, which examines fill trends and spending patterns in the U.S. for popular weight loss medications. But Marsh said out-of-pocket costs can add up, even if a patient has insurance coverage for a weight loss treatment. GoodRx said people without insurance can save an average of $250 monthly, or $3,000 annually, using its coupons for weight loss drugs. The federal Medicare plan also doesn't cover weight loss treatments unless they are approved and prescribed for another health condition. But the Biden administration in November proposed a rule that would allow Medicare and Medicaid to cover weight loss drugs for patients with obesity.

AdvertisementHigh housing costs, driven in large part by a shortage of homes, are keeping inflation sticky. Economists say Trump's proposals are a mixed bag; some could help housing costs and some could hurt. Ultimately, housing policy experts and industry leaders say housing costs will largely depend on how much new supply can be delivered to the market, which is suffering from a severe shortage of homes. Federal housing assistanceDuring his first term, Trump repeatedly proposed major cuts to housing assistance for households with low incomes or members with disabilities. This would make it harder for lower-income Americans to afford homes and slow down affordable housing construction.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Sunday that his government planned to cut student loans for around three million Australians by 20%, wiping off around 16 billion Australian dollars ($10 billion) in debts. The move builds on May's budget, which attacked cost of living pressures in Australia and gave debt relief for students, as well as more investment to make medicines cheaper, and a boost to a rent assistance program. "This will help everyone with a student debt right now, whilst we work hard to deliver a better deal for every student in the years ahead," Albanese said in a statement announcing the cut to student loans for tertiary education. The changes would mean the average graduate with a loan of AU$27,600 would have AU$5,520 wiped, the government said, adding that they would take effect from June 1, 2025.
