The death toll in Maui stood at 89 on Saturday night and was expected to climb even further, according to Gov.
Many survivors in the region were relying on each other in the wake of the disaster.
“Where is the government?”The emergency response in Lahaina, a historic seaside town in western Maui, is “a combination” of efforts by authorities and private citizens, the Maui County mayor, Richard T. Bissen Jr., said.
It remains unsafe for residents to return because of toxic fumes and other dangers, Mr. Green said.
“We are going to do some reviews so we can make things safer going forward,” Mr. Green said.
