CNN —The Oscars of the food world — the James Beard Awards — were handed out Monday night to many chefs and restaurants reflecting cultures and regions that have long been overlooked when honoring culinary achievement in the United States. Outstanding Chef winner Michael Rafidi dedicated his award to Palestinian people all over the world in his acceptance speech. The 2024 winners bring heritage from all over the globe — the Philippines, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Vietnam, Senegal — to tables across the United States. This year’s awards also bring recognition to restaurants in many smaller towns and states that have not historically been recognized with James Beard Awards. Chef Masako Morishita received the James Beard Award for Emerging Chef.

CNN —A New Orleans restaurant featuring a modern Senegalese tasting menu and an Ethiopia-born chef who studied psychology before turning to a culinary career are among the restaurants and chefs named as finalists for the coveted James Beard Awards. The finalists for the Restaurant and Chef Awards were announced Wednesday in Washington, DC. In the Emerging Chef category, Fariyal Abdullahi, executive chef at Hav & Mar in New York, is among the five finalists. Masako Morishita moved to Washington, DC to be a cheerleader for the Washington Commanders. Billionaire investor Leon Cooperman thinks that it's a stock picker's market and only individual names will offer value for investors as the overall market struggles. Cooperman became overweight the energy sector about two years ago when the group was still unloved. On the broader market, Cooperman recently said investors might not see a new high for a long time, partly because of the risk of a fiscal crisis. "Ultimately, we will have a crisis in public sector finance, and the market is not discounting a crisis. He said he would be very surprised if the S & P 500 climbs above 4,600 anytime this year.

“Rustin,” a biopic that depicts how Rustin navigated a gantlet of personal and political hurdles to pull off the March on Washington, debuts on Netflix today. According to U.S. News and World Report, Hickory, North Carolina is the cheapest place to live in the U.S. This month, U.S. News and World Report released its ranking of the cities with the lowest cost of living, based on the median gross rent and annual housing costs for mortgage-paying homeowners. The average Hickory home value is $276,748, up 5.3% over the past year, according to Zillow's Home Value Index. Youngstown, Ohio is the second cheapest place to live in the U.S., according to U.S. News and World Report. Since 2010, new businesses have been popping up in its downtown, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The awards have been presented in the Windy City since 2015 and are set to remain there through 2027. Like last year, much of the 2023 show was focused on showcasing the new push for greater diversity. The James Beard Foundation has been mired in controversy over the past few years. Tennessee cities like Chattanooga and Knoxville often show up on lists of the best places to live. Even smaller Tennessee cities have experienced an influx in movers. Even Nashville dwellers are turning their back on city life and spreading out in smaller Tennessee towns like Clarksville, Pleasant View, and Ashland City, according to Frate. A practicing Massachusetts doctor was arrested and charged in the January 6 Capitol riot this week. Starer's Tuesday arrest came two days before the January 6 congressional committee released its final, 845-page report detailing the Capitol riot and former President Donald Trump's role in it. Starer proceeded to punch an officer on the left side of the head, according to investigators. The unnamed officer said the blonde woman came at her a second time before the officer struck her in response. The officer later identified Starer in photos as her attacker, according to court documents.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said stores could close if the rising tide of theft wasn't stemmed. Customers and employees blame self-checkout, which Walmart has increasingly relied on, for theft. Since McMillon made those comments, more than 100 Walmart customers and former and current employees have reached out to an Insider reporter to say the retailer must rely less on self-checkout. "They need to hire cashiers again and do away with so many self-checkout," Mindy Stanley, a Walmart customer from Ashland, Kentucky, said. Polly Kearns, a Walmart shopper from Gulfport, Mississippi, said the best way to protect against theft and make customers happy was to eliminate self-checkouts.
