Israel’s air force pounded Beirut’s southern suburb of Dahiyeh overnight, destroying dozens of buildings in several neighborhoods, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said Friday. Recently, Israel has intensified its airstrikes on the northeastern city of Baalbek and nearby villages, as well as different parts of southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said an Israeli airstrike on a mountain town overlooking Beirut also killed three people and wounded five. On Oct. 6, an Israeli strike in Qamatiyeh killed six people, including three children, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said. The war began after Hamas-led militants stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducting 250 others.

NEW DELHI, India— Living in a pollution-free environment is a fundamental right, India’s Supreme Court said Wednesday as it urged authorities to address deteriorating air quality in the north of the country. Swiss group IQAir rated Delhi the world’s most polluted city in its live rankings. The Supreme Court pulled up the governments of both states for taking “selective action” against stubble burning, saying penal provisions were not being properly implemented. Recognizing this, the court on Wednesday directed the federal government and the governments of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the western state of Rajasthan to submit compliance reports. In Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab, authorities have changed school timings and suspended outdoor activities because of pollution.

CNN —Drought is now so bad in parts of southern Africa that governments say they must kill hundreds of their most captivating, majestic wild animals to feed desperately hungry people. In August, Namibia announced it had embarked on a cull of 723 animals, including 83 elephants, 30 hippos and 300 zebras. Crops have failed, livestock has died and nearly 70 million people are desperately in need of food. They say it’s the opposite: reducing numbers will help protect remaining animals as the drought shrinks food and water resources. Both Namibia and Zimbabwe say professional hunters will ensure entire groups are killed to prevent this.

The high sea surface temperatures that helped both storms intensify were 200 to 500 times more likely because of climate change, the report found. As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida’s west coast, a new report estimates how much more intense Hurricane Helene’s winds and rain were because of climate change. The sea surface temperatures that propelled Helene and Milton were 200 to 500 times more likely because of climate change, the report found. They found that coastal rainfall totals that high were 40% more likely because of climate change and that inland totals that high were 70% more likely because of climate change. “There isn’t anything that we don’t need right now,” said Tim Love, a volunteer at the center. The destruction of major roads, combined with the natural terrain of the southern Appalachians, have made the rapid distribution of aid an ongoing challenge. The devastation in North Carolina and Tennessee has left two major interstates, Interstate 40 and Interstate 26, largely closed down and inaccessible. According to data from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the entire western border of the state has limited access. Hundreds of road incidents across the region have made numerous roadways blocked and inaccessible due to the damage.

In pictures: Solar eclipse creates ‘ring of fire’
  + stars: | 2024-10-02 | by ( Kyle Almond | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: 1 min
An annular solar eclipse was seen in parts of South America on Wednesday, creating a blazing “ring of fire” in the sky. Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between Earth and the sun and the moon is near or at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth. The moon doesn’t completely block the sun as it does during a total solar eclipse, which is what causes the ring of fire effect. Although the path of the eclipse tracked over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and Antarctica, only parts of Argentina and Chile, including Easter Island, were able to see the ring of fire.

The Summary The devastation in western North Carolina is a result of a combination of factors related to climate change and the terrain. Mountains tend to block weather systems and squeeze out more rain, while steep slopes raise flood risk. At the same time, climate change is making storms stronger and wetter. What's more, the area around Asheville had gotten heavy rain before Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida. Asheville and its surrounding towns in western North Carolina had just been soaked by a severe rainstorm when the remnants of Hurricane Helene slammed into the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Israel launched a rare airstrike that killed a senior Hezbollah military official in a densely populated southern Beirut neighborhood on Friday. The Israeli military did not provide the identities of the other Hezbollah commanders allegedly killed in its strike on the crowded neighborhood just kilometers from downtown Beirut. Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire regularly since Hamas' Oct. 7 assault on southern Israel ignited the Israeli military's devastating offensive in Gaza. The last time Israel hit Beirut was in a July airstrike that killed senior Hezbollah commander Fouad Shukur. After Friday's Israeli airstrike, Hezbollah announced attacks on northern Israel, two of which it said targeted an intelligence base from where it claimed Israel directed assassinations.
