The Times Square ball first dropped in 1904, and it came into being thanks to Jacob Starr, a Ukranian immigrant and metalworker, and the former New York Times publisher, Adolph Ochs. The Times Square Ball has had seven different designs. For the millennium, the Times Square ball got a new look, with a crystal design from Waterford Crystal and lighting from Philips.
