Jane Seneca Doe artist rendering Courtesy of Carl KoppelmanOn October 2, 1976, the body of a young woman was found murdered and tossed in a ditch along Highway 6 in an unincorporated area of Grundy County, Illinois, near the village of Seneca. A 30-year-old Hawaii woman at the center of a missing persons search in Los Angeles willfully crossed into Mexico, seemingly as part of her desire to "disconnect," police said Monday. He said that detectives can't say they're "100% right" about their determination but that they know she didn't have her phone after she left Los Angeles International Airport. That day, family members said, she sent messages that concerned them because of their content and a voice that didn't seem to match hers. McDonnell said Kobayashi was reported missing Nov. 13, but the LAPD took over the case on Nov. 15. The Los Angeles County medical examiner said Ryan Kobayashi, 58, died as a result of multiple blunt force trauma injuries.

Andrew Carnegie’s 1902 mansion on Fifth Avenue, a Georgian homage on an immense, Gilded-Age scale, is currently the home of a more modest domestic scene: the bass-baritone Davóne Tines’s childhood living room. As part of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum’s triennial exhibition, “Making Home,” Tines has worked with the director Zack Winokur and the artist Hugh Hayden to create “Living Room, Orlean, Virginia,” an uncanny, poignant replica of the house of Tines’s grandparents, who raised him.

London CNN —A Banksy mural in Bristol, southwestern England, is set to be sold at auction next year, along with the building it was created on. “Well Hung Lover” was painted on the side of a building on Bristol’s Frogmore Street in 2006, with the city’s residents later voting to keep the mural. The building, which once housed a sexual health clinic, will be put up for auction by Hollis Morgan, an estate agency and auction house in Bristol. While the future owner has to ensure the “Well Hung Lover” stays put, they have no obligation to maintain it. Last year, a Banksy mural in Dover, southern England, valued at around £1 million ($1.2 million), was lost for good after the building it was painted on was knocked down.

At the fruit stand where he works on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Shah Alam sells dozens of bananas a day at 35 cents a piece, or four for a dollar. He does a brisk business in cheap fruit outside Sotheby’s auction house; inside, art can sell for millions. But last Wednesday, Mr. Alam sold a banana that a short time later would be auctioned as part of a work of absurdist art, won by a cryptocurrency entrepreneur for $5.2 million plus more than $1 million in auction-house fees. A few days after the sale, as Mr. Alam stood in the rain on York Avenue and East 72nd Street, snapping bananas free of their bunches, he learned from a reporter what had become of the fruit: It had been duct-taped to a wall as part of a work by the Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, and sold to Justin Sun, the Chinese founder of a cryptocurrency platform.

CNN —“Demure,” a word that went viral over the summer, has been named Dictionary.com’s 2024 word of the year — beating out other contenders like “brainrot,” “brat,” and “weird.”In an announcement Monday, the site said that the word experienced a “meteoric rise in usage” in 2024 — up 1,200% between January and August — a spike that was largely attributed to TikToker and beauty influencer Jools Lebron’s popularization of the phrase “very demure, very mindful” in a series of satirical videos that shook the internet. “That’s the joke!”The satire is clearest in a clip in which the TikTok star asserts that she’s going to behave in a demure, mindful way while going out on the Las Vegas Strip. I don’t dog-ear pages, I put in a bookmark,” RuPaul said in a video promoting online bookstore Allstora. Lebron, who is transgender, said that the fame from her “demure” videos has helped her finance the rest of her transition. “Brat,” another word that has taken on new meaning in 2024, was named Collins Dictionary’s word of 2024 for being one of the most talked about words on and offline.

Emma Corrin first encountered Maggie Nelson’s work three summers ago, when the actor was in Brighton, England, filming 2022’s “My Policeman,” a British drama about postwar sexual repression. At the time, Corrin, now 28, was grappling with their gender identity, and a friend recommended “The Argonauts” (2015), Nelson’s memoir about queer desire and making a family with her partner, the artist Harry Dodge. For Corrin, who recently wrote a screenplay with a friend, Nelson’s work remains a touchstone. Earlier this year, Corrin saw the playwright Margaret Perry’s adaptation of “Bluets,” starring Emma D’Arcy, Kayla Meikle and Ben Whishaw, in London. It was the first time that Nelson’s work had been performed onstage.
