Can you can leave your estate to your pet?
  + stars: | 2024-09-14 | by ( Alexandra Peers | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +5 min
CNN —Some people really do leave money to their pets. Estate attorneys told CNN they’re seeing more incidences of people making financial plans for their pets after they die. Twenty-nine states have enacted pet trust laws since 2008, and now every state, plus Washington, DC, has some form of guidelines, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. However, if a person names a guardian for their pet, they can leave money and property to that person. dpa/picture alliance/Eventpress/SipaFlorida attorney Peggy Hoyt, author of “All My Children Wear Fur Coats,” told CNN she urges her clients to leave comprehensive instructions for pet caretakers.

Accepting the reality that everyone dies eventually is an important step toward appreciating the life you have left to live. Arthur's advice: Stand in front of a mirror, look into your eyes and repeat to yourself, "I'm going to die." But the mindset shift can have many beneficial effects: Embracing mortality leads people to be more compassionate, mindful and driven to achieve their goals in life, Santos said. Arthur has spoken to hundreds of individuals about their final stages of life. "Grounding in my mortality means that at some point I won't have access to all these senses anymore," Arthur said.

When Michelle Terry, the artistic director at Shakespeare’s Globe theater in London, decided to put on a production of “Richard III” with a feminist twist, she probably didn’t expect accusations of discrimination. The run-up to the show’s premiere on Tuesday was overshadowed by a controversy over the fact that Terry had cast herself as villainous title character despite not having a physical disability. Richard, described as “deformed” in the play’s opening lines, has traditionally been portrayed as a hunchback — almost always by able-bodied actors, with only a few notable exceptions in recent years. (In 2022 Arthur Hughes, who has radial dysplasia, became the first disabled actor to play Richard for the Royal Shakespeare Company.) When Shakespeare’s Globe announced its casting earlier this year, the Disabled Artists Alliance, a British organization, published an open letter condemning it as “offensive and distasteful,” since Richard’s “disabled identity is imbued and integral to all corners of the script.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Denny Laine, a British singer, songwriter and guitarist who performed in an early, pop-oriented version of the Moody Blues and was later Paul McCartney's longtime sideman in the ex-Beatle's solo band Wings, has died at age 79. Laine, inducted five years ago into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Moody Blues, died Tuesday in Naples, Florida. His death comes almost exactly 50 years after the release of McCartney's acclaimed “Band On the Run” album, on which Laine played guitar and provided backing vocals. The Moody Blues then turned to the ambitious, classically influenced sounds of “Nights in White Satin" and other songs. Founded in 1971, the year after the Beatles broke up, Wings went through various personnel changes over the following decade, with Laine, McCartney and McCartney's wife, Linda.

Zhao has been replaced by Richard Teng, a senior Binance executive who joined in 2021, the company said. "Binance has seen significant exchange outflows since the announcement, but relative to their total holdings, it's quite small," Nansen analysts said. By comparison, investors pulled around $1.43 billion from the crypto exchange and its U.S. affiliate in June after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued the companies. Lawyers for Zhao, who founded Binance in 2017, did not respond to requests for comment on Wednesday. Zhao paid a $175 million bail bond, with another $15 million held in a trust account, a court filing showed.

A lead prosecutor and a judge involved in separate criminal cases against Donald Trump received violent threats within two days of the former president warning that he was "coming after" his foes, court documents allege. Prosecutors allege Arthur Hanson, 59, of Huntsville, Alabama, delivered the threats in voicemails left for Willis and Labat on Aug. 6. Smith cited the same post in a September court filing seeking a gag order against Trump. Later in August, Trump was booked and had his mugshot taken at Fulton County jail, which was run by Labat. Trump was already facing dozens of felony counts in three other criminal cases by the time he was charged in Georgia.

The war began on Oct. 6, and the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries cut production and raised prices on Oct. 17. By the end of the embargo in March 1974, the global cost of oil had climbed nearly 300%. Judge Pauline Newman is 96 and says colleagues are trying to force her out over petty complaints. But she had an unnamed law clerk run errands and retaliated against an aide, an investigation found. In April, that clerk asked to be transferred to a judge after learning that "other law clerks were assisting Judge Newman in her defense of these proceedings," he said in an affidavit. "To sit at the feet, metaphorically, of Judge Newman, is an opportunity that any aspiring patent lawyer would welcome." The code of conduct for federal judges bars them from using chambers staff for certain extra-judicial activities (running errands isn't specifically listed).

‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Wins the Palme d’Or
  + stars: | 2023-05-27 | by ( Manohla Dargis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The 76th Cannes Film Festival ended Saturday with the Palme d’Or awarded to “Anatomy of a Fall.” Directed by Justine Triet, this intellectual thriller centers on a woman who is brought to trial after the mysterious death of her husband. Written by Triet and Arthur Harari, the film was an early favorite with critics. Triet is the third woman to have won the Palme; Julia Ducournau won in 2021 for “Titane,” and Jane Campion took the prize in 1993 for “The Piano.”The Palme was presented to Triet by Jane Fonda, who noted the “historic” number of women — seven — who had films competing for the top honor. The strong main competition, with a jury led by the director Ruben Ostlund, effectively announced that the festival had returned to full strength after several unsteady pandemic years. An icy exploration of the banality of evil — the family eats, relaxes and sleeps to the constant sounds of screams, shouts and gunfire — the movie sharply divided the critics here.
May 17 (Reuters) - Shares of U.S. regional lenders jumped on Wednesday on growing investor confidence that the worst of the banking crisis was likely over, following news of strong deposit growth at Western Alliance Bancorp (WAL.N). Arthur Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth, said Western Alliance's deposit growth disclosure was good news for worried investors. "Western Alliance, one of the most hard-hit banks, came out with a filing showing deposit increase. Western Alliance shares, which are down 41% year-to-date, surged 10% to $34.81, erasing losses recorded over the last two weeks. Other regional lenders closed higher: PacWest Bancorp (PACW.O), whose stock has lost nearly 76% of its value year-to-date, spiked 22%.
