Opinion | Trump’s Call to End Taxes on Social Security
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Trump Dangles New Tax Cuts, Now for a Larger Voting Group” (front page, Aug. 8):Donald Trump’s latest campaign gambit, calling for an end to taxes on Social Security benefits, risks deepening a generational divide already evidenced by his indifference to man-made climate change and the more than $8 trillion added to the national debt during his term in office. This article cited an estimate of another $1.8 trillion added to the national debt over a decade if his proposal comes to pass. This does not include the impact of continuing the Trump-era tax cuts beyond their expiration date in 2025. The Brookings Institution estimated this would add another $2 trillion to the national debt by 2028. Arthur GreenbergExeter, N.H.To the Editor:As a liberal, I’d support Donald Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on Social Security if he would pay for it by eliminating tax breaks for private equity investors, hedge fund managers, and other special interest groups that bought tax breaks from Congress, and by taxing the fossil fuel industry and other polluters.

His book was an intense trip through a surreal night in neon-lit Tokyo, and I was completely captivated by the liminal vibe. Over the next few days, I started researching the Amazon Kindle as a convenient remedy for reading at night. AdvertisementI went on a binge read and was easily going through one book every two to three days with the Kindle. And it's not just me — a 2014 study found that Kindle readers absorb less than on paper, and a 2019 study found that Kindle readers performed worse when measuring chronology and temporality. I ultimately came to the conclusion that the Kindle created too much detachment for me, so it had to go.

Another market research firm called Counterpoint Research also came out with China numbers on Thursday. Photo: James Arthur Gekiere/Zuma PressThe European Union is considering sanctioning eight Chinese companies over Russia’s war in Ukraine, diplomats said, with the bloc looking to target firms they believe have provided Moscow electronic items, including semiconductors, that can be used for military purposes. The proposed listings are part of an 11th package of sanctions against Russia over its invasion. The new measures center on efforts to prevent the circumvention of Western sanctions by Russia and its military, a central plank in the effort by European and U.S. policy makers to weaken Russia’s economy and crimp the revenue the Kremlin has to continue its war effort.
Once inside he will sit on the Coronation Chair, which is more than 700 years old and will temporarily house a block of Scottish sandstone known as the Stone of Destiny. He will put on, at some point, a 200-year-old cloak that is woven from gold cloth, embroidered with roses, thistles and shamrocks and lined with red silk. Britain’s monarchy and the country’s past are inextricably linked, and a coronation is an opportunity for the institution to nod at history and hope that history nods back. A successful coronation telegraphs to the world — and reflects back to as many Britons as possible — a version of who we’d like to think we are. The problem is that this coronation is arriving at a time when it’s not exactly clear what that is.

Bush and Rubio were allies in Florida government, and Rubio was widely viewed as a Bush protége. In the end, Trump branding Bush as "low energy" wasn't the only thing standing between Bush and the nomination. But the economy may be fine with higher inflation. The 2% inflation target has been repeated so often by Fed officials and central bankers worldwide that it seems absolutely crucial to a healthy economy. But "the 2% inflation target, it's relatively arbitrary," said Josh Bivens, director of research at the Economic Policy Institute. In 1991, Canada announced its inflation target; the United Kingdom followed a year later. But if the 2% target is arbitrary, it implies that the economy could function normally at a higher level of inflation.

The 2% inflation target is key to the Federal Reserve's vision for stable prices in the U.S. economy, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. But, "the 2% inflation target, it's relatively arbitrary," Josh Bivens, director of research at the Economic Policy Institute, told CNBC. "We led the way in inflation targeting," Arthur Grimes, professor of wellbeing and public policy at Victoria University, told CNBC. Canada announced its inflation target in 1991, and the United Kingdom followed suit in 1992. Then, Sweden and Finland declared inflation targets in 1993, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
Since it's arrival in 1990, the 2% inflation target phenomenon has sailed from Wellington around the globe to become the accepted norm among central banks, large and small, for grounding public expectations for what inflation ought to be. The adoption of the inflation target was followed by aggressive monetary tightening, with 90-day rates climbing to 15% in 1990. A year later, inflation had fallen to 2% and New Zealanders' inflation expectations adjusted quickly to the new paradigm. Initially there was debate about whether interest rates or money supply should be the target, but it was decided it was better to target the ultimate goal: inflation. "They did all the hard work and I just got all the glory and the title of being the most despised man in New Zealand," Douglas said.
