Less than two months into his tenure as CEO, Ortberg has largely understood the assignment. See here: We’re nearly two weeks into a strike by Boeing’s largest labor union. Initially, Ortberg seemed to have buy-in from labor leaders, who publicly acknowledged that the new boss was walking into a conflict that predated him by 16 years. All of that gave the new boss, who spent his first day at work touring a factory floor, a kind of pro-labor halo. “This tactic is a blatant show of disrespect” to union members and the bargaining process, the International Association of Machinists wrote Monday.

Out of the valid votes counted, 56% of workers voted “no,” while 44% voted “yes” for unionization, according to Mercedes-Benz. Under relatively new UAW president Shawn Fain, the UAW had shifted its strategy for a membership push in non-unionized factories, many of which are located in the American South. David Johnston, right, a worker at Mercedes, thanks UAW President Shawn Fain following a press conference in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on May 17, 2024, after workers at two Alabama Mercedes-Benz factories voted overwhelmingly against joining the United Auto Workers union. Alabama is not Michigan, and we are not the Sweet Home to the UAW,” Ivey said in the statement. People react as the result of a vote comes in favour of the hourly factory workers at Volkswagen's assembly plant to join the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, at a watch party in Chattanooga, Tennessee, U.S., April 19, 2024.

New York CNN —A high-stakes union election is underway at a Mercedes-Benz plant near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the only plant for the luxury automaker in North America. The fallout will be significant whether the workers at Mercedes-Benz vote to join the United Auto Workers union or not. And last month, it won a union election at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, its first victory in three attempts to organize the factory. Though a union win could generate momentum, it doesn’t mean a victory will mean other plants can overcome management opposition at other foreign-owned plants. Non-union automakers have already begun their response to the big union victories thus far.

A whole lot of people who were anti-union in the past have switched.”The union vote at the Volkswagen plant will mean more than whether the 4,300 hourly workers in Chattanooga are members of the UAW or not. WASHINGTON (AP) — As he looks past the GOP primary and towards a likely general election rematch against President Joe Biden, Donald Trump will meet with members of the Teamsters Union in Washington Wednesday afternoon as he tries to cut into Biden's support. Trump is hoping to cut into that support as he casts himself as pro-worker and tries to exacerbate longstanding divisions between union leaders and rank-and-file members. While the Teamsters endorsed Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016, O'Brien stressed the union has “a very diverse membership. Wheaton estimates about 30% to 40% of its members voted for Trump in 2020, even though the union endorsed Biden. Teamsters members include UPS drivers, film and television workers, freight operators, members of law enforcement and other government workers.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will be the keynote speaker Wednesday at a United Auto Workers' political convention as he works to sway blue-collar workers his way in critical auto-making swing states such as Michigan and Wisconsin. But as recently as Monday, UAW President Shawn Fain was restrained in his comments, saying as the conference opened, "We have to make our political leaders stand up with us. She said his appearance should remind union members that Biden is on their side. Rothenberg said a union endorsement is important because polling shows many UAW members are often undecided in the spring before a presidential election. New York CNN —The longest US auto strike this century is over after a pretty clear win for the United Auto Workers union at all three unionized automakers. “I don’t like what I’ve seen in my work career with the UAW leadership, where they were too damn close to the companies,” UAW President Shawn Fain told CNN earlier this month. So I like to let the body of work speak for itself.”The success of those contracts is the reason that Shawn Fain is CNN Business’ labor leader of the year. All told nearly 800,000 union members got raises of 10% or more during 2023. The plant will be be reopened under the agreement reached between Stellantis and the UAW to end the union's strike at the company.

New York CNN —Nearly 900,000 Americans sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner this week will have unions – and the double-digit pay increases they won – to thank. The strike lasted more than six weeks before the union won contracts it was seeking from all three unionized US automakers. The unions won significant pay increases and job protections they were seeking. And even with some of the contracts that pass, some union members offer significant opposition, believing they could have negotiated for even more. The union won a contract approved by 86% of membership who voted on ratification.

Workers at Ford voted 69.3% in favor of the pact, which passed with nearly a 15,000-vote margin in balloting that ended early Saturday. Earlier this week, GM workers narrowly approved a similar contract. They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. This provision will give the UAW an opportunity to unionize the EV battery plants plants, which will represent a rising share of industry jobs in the years ahead. Contracts with the auto companies should also lead to higher wages at auto-parts supply companies and in other industries, Wheaton said.

Workers at Chrysler-owner Stellantis are still in early voting but have so far largely backed the contract. GM's Spring Hill Assembly plant in Tennessee on Monday became the most recent major facility to vote against the contract, with 67.5% of UAW members rejecting it. Reasons behind the disapproval vary, according to industry experts and UAW members who spoke with CNBC. GM has had 52% of workers voting so far in support of ratification. He said these benefits remain a target for future bargaining when the tentative deals, if ratified, expire on April 30, 2028.

UAW President Shawn Fain warned of a more combative union heading into the talks, but not many, if anyone, expected the union to strategically outmaneuver the companies like it did, leading to record deals for 146,000 UAW members with GM, Ford Motor and Stellantis . UAW members must still vote to ratify the tentative agreements. 1, of course, are the UAW members," said Art Wheaton, a labor professor at The Worker Institute at Cornell University. Some winners, some losers: UAW membersBroadly speaking, the UAW members covered by the new deals are winners, however not everyone faced the financial toll of the union's strikes against the Detroit automakers. Customers might assume that nonunion automakers, like Toyota, Tesla or Hyundai-Kia, will now be able to price their vehicles well below what the Detroit automakers can. “When the dust settles from this UAW debacle, the Detroit auto stalwarts find themselves with a bigger cost profile with competition increasing," said Dan Ives, an analyst at Wedbush. That means that competition for buyers is intensifying as pent-up demand from the pandemic wanes, making it difficult for any automaker to raise prices. But if the Detroit companies report lower income, Wall Street will register its disappointment, and stock prices could fall. “You either raise your labor costs to meet what the UAW is getting or you risk the unionization drive.”

DETROIT (AP) — General Motors and Jeep maker Stellantis are meeting with United Auto Workers bargainers Thursday to see if they can reach a contract agreement that mirrors a deal signed with crosstown rival Ford. Nearly 17,000 striking workers at Ford left the picket lines when the agreement was announced Wednesday night and will return to work shortly. About 57,000 Ford workers still have to vote on the tentative pact. It wasn't clear what Ford agreed to in terms of battery factories. Ford had announced plans to build two battery factories in Kentucky, one in Tennessee and another in Michigan, but the Michigan plant is now on hold.

While the WGA settled its strike recently, winning improved wages and job protections, SAG-AFTRA remains on strike, and most filming remains on hold. They won a reported 32% increase in pay over the six-year life of a contract reached in June and ratified earlier this month. Many of the health care workers unions say their main issue is lack of adequate staffing and the workers’ belief that they’re not able to provide the level of care they want without more help. Even after escalating its strike against Detroit automakers on Friday, the United Auto Workers union still has plenty of leverage in its effort to force the companies to agree to significant increases in pay and benefits. The UAW could, if it chose to, vastly expand the number of workers who could strike assembly plants and parts facilities of General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, the owner of the Jeep and Ram brands. All three companies said that talks with the union continued on Saturday, though officials said they expected no major announcements. In expanding the strike on Friday, the UAW struck only the parts-distribution centers of GM and Stellantis. Ford was spared from the latest walkouts because of progress that company has made in negotiations with the union, said UAW President Shawn Fain.

A Unifor strike would disrupt Ford's Oakville Assembly Plant that produces the Ford Edge and Lincoln Nautilus crossovers. F-Series, Mustang could be disruptedIf a prolonged Canadian strike occurs, the work stoppage could eventually impact U.S. production of the vehicles. Gasoline V8 models make up about 50% of Mustang and 20% of F-150 models sold in the U.S. Large F-Series trucks exclusively have V8 engines. But a majority of those vehicles sold have diesel V8 engines rather than gasoline, according to the company. CNN —UAW President Shawn Fain has become the X factor in the striking autoworkers’ pursuit of increased pay and benefits, injecting a level of chaos into negotiations that neither the automakers nor the White House predicted or quite know how to manage. The UAW on Friday struck at just three plants, one at each of the Big Three automakers. Nevertheless, the strike marks the first time in history the UAW has struck at all three automakers simultaneously. Fain told union members Thursday that the union’s strike strategy “will keep the companies guessing” and give union negotiators “maximum leverage” when they return to the bargaining table. Although Fain has at times praised Biden, he has also criticized the president for failing to do enough to help the autoworkers in their cause.

Here’s what to watch as the clock ticks down:Which plants would go on strike? One advantage of a targeted strike for the union is the potential to save resources and extend a possible walkout. Striking union members are eligible for $500 a week from the union’s strike fund. Ford has not had a national strike since 1976 and has not had a strike of any kind at its US plants since 1978. Sometimes after talks break down, the parties can return to the table and reach a deal without a strike.
