Decades of conflict and instability have left millions of Afghans on the brink of hunger and starvation. The Taliban celebrates the third anniversary of its takeover of Afghanistan, at Bagram Air Base, in Bagram, Parwan province. Ahmad Sahel Arman / AFP - Getty ImagesThe Bagram parade was the Taliban’s grandest and most defiant since regaining control of the country in August 2021. The audience of some 10,000 men included senior Taliban officials like Acting Defense Minister Mullah Yaqoob and Acting Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani. They say that Afghans, particularly women and girls, will suffer if there isn’t more diplomatic engagement with the Taliban.

CNN —Listening to music, smoking hookah, and getting a Western-style haircut are all punishable acts under the suffocating rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan, according to a new UN report. The Taliban’s so-called morality police have curtailed human rights – disproportionately targeting women and girls – creating a “climate of fear and intimidation,” said the report by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) published Tuesday. Moreover, the report said, the Taliban’s instructions are issued in a variety of formats – often only verbally – and are inconsistently and unpredictably enforced. However, reports from Afghanistan suggest the Taliban’s repressive control over women has led to a sharp rise in suicide attempts. Ahmad Sahel Arman/AFP/Getty ImagesMedia is heavily restricted, and residents live in a surveillance state, the report added.

Soon, dozens more students protesting the monthslong assault on Gaza were arrested at New York and Yale universities. Ash told CNN he was one of 20 students arrested following a sit-in on November 8. The charges were later dropped, according to the Brown Daily Herald, but 41 students arrested the following month in similar circumstances still face charges, which protesters now want dropped. Separately, the referendum on the BDS resolution “did not move forward because of potential conflict with federal and state laws,” the university told CNN in a statement. Police then were aggressive, Agrawal told CNN.

(Reuters) - Iran unveiled new weaponry on Saturday including what it said was the locally made Arman anti-ballistic missile system and the Azarakhsh low-altitude air defense system, the official IRNA news agency reported. Gaza has been under military assault by Israel since Hamas's attacks on Israel's south on Oct. 7. Israel has also struck Iranian targets in Syria. "With the entry of new systems into the country's defense network, the air defense capability of the Islamic Republic of Iran will increase significantly," IRNA said. In June Iran presented what officials described as its first domestically made hypersonic ballistic missile, named Fattah, with a range of 1,400 km.

A handful of restaurants across the US have changed their exterior marquee signs to read, "Dave's NOT Chicken." The chain changed its marquee to "Dave's Not Chicken" at a Santa Ana, California restaurant. Nancy Luna/Business InsiderDave's Hot Chicken was founded as a pop-up restaurant in East Hollywood in 2017. But the chain's culinary team couldn't find "any product that delivered the same craveability as our chicken," the chain told Business Insider. "Seeing Chick-fil-A's test further validated that this could be a viable option, so long as we could nail the flavor profile," the chain told Business Insider.

A man walks while smoke rises above buildings after aerial bombardment, during clashes between the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the army in Khartoum North, Sudan, May 1, 2023. But analysts and diplomats say it is unclear how the RSF could govern a breakaway territory. "(Governing) means you take on responsibilities for food, health, and security," said Suliman Baldo of the Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker. From late October the RSF took over army headquarters in Nyala, Zalingei and El Geneina, three of five Darfur state capitals. They say the RSF is seeking legitimacy in the talks, after public anger over looting, rape and detentions blamed on its troops.

But starting in your fifties, Dr. Mendez said, the area of the brain in charge of memory retrieval is less efficient. So if you’re struggling to remember “that movie starring that guy,” the memory is often there, Dr. Mendez said — it just takes longer to surface. We are inundated with so much information each day, said Dr. Davis, and the brain has to manage memories. “Forgetting is a normal part of one’s brain function,” he said. It’s not good for your brain health in general, but as we get older, our capacity to multitask “typically diminishes,” he said.

Unstable Diffusion is an AI image generator with minimal content restrictions. That's what Chaudhry did when starting Unstable Diffusion in August 2022, the same month Stable Diffusion was released to the public. The community launched a Kickstarter campaign in December to raise money to build its image generator, but was removed from the platform 12 days later. At the time, experts told Insider that being featured in non-consensual deepfake porn can be traumatic and considered abuse. TechCrunch was able to use the generator to create images that produced look-alikes of Donald Trump and Chris Hemsworth, for example.

The MT Arman 114 was carrying 272,569 metric tons of light crude oil, valued at 4.6 trillion rupiah ($304 million), when it was seized last week, the Indonesian authorities said. The Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) was suspected of transferring oil to another vessel without a permit on Friday, the Southeast Asian nation's maritime security agency said. "MT Arman was spoofing their automatic identification system (AIS) to show its position was in the Red Sea but in reality it is here," Aan told reporters. Along with the Arman, authorities detained its Egyptian captain, 28 crew and 3 passengers, who were the family of a security officer on board, the agency said. The firm debut by Harita Nickel could boost sentiment surrounding upcoming IPOs in Indonesia, which is one of the world's hottest IPO markets this year on a drive by the government to privatise some state-owned enterprises. Harita Nickel's stock opened at 1,285 rupiah per share, slightly higher than its initial public offering (IPO) price of 1,250 rupiah a share, on the Indonesian stock exchange. Russian forces launched a deadly barrage of missiles and suicide drones into Ukraine on Monday. After the attack, Putin claimed his troops targeted Ukrainian military and energy facilities.
