That prompted the country’s president, Javier Milei, to sack Garro. “For this reason, Julio Garro ceases to be undersecretary of sports of the nation.”However, Garro later “categorically denied” asking Messi to apologize. In a separate post, Garro went on to thank Milei for letting him be part of his team. In his apology, Fernández said he was “caught up in the euphoria,” but Lloris insisted this was no excuse.

On Thursday in Atlanta, the Argentine national soccer team will kick off the 2024 edition of Copa América, South America’s biggest soccer championship, with a game against Canada. Fans around the world, but especially in Argentina, have been eagerly awaiting this day ever since their beloved squad, led by perhaps the greatest soccer player of all time, won the 2022 World Cup. But when Lionel Messi, the Argentine captain and superstar, takes the field at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with his teammates as the favorites to defend their 2021 Copa América title, a simmering sadness will follow him. Will this be the last time Mr. Messi, who turns 37 next week and said two years ago that it was his final World Cup, wears the blue and white Argentine uniform in a major tournament? Will this be the last time one of the most famous humans on Earth, who brought joy to many during unstable times in his homeland, represents his soccer-obsessed country?

Reuters —Diego Maradona’s children filed a request with the Argentine Courts on Thursday to move the former football great’s body “to a much safer place” and for fans “to pay tribute” in a mausoleum. Maradona’s remains lie in a private cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires where he was carried in November 2020 in a massive funeral procession. The mausoleum, called “Memorial del Diez,” is located behind the Casa Rosada, the seat of the executive branch of the Argentine government, and will be open to the public, Veronica Ojeda, mother of Maradona’s youngest son, told local media. Maradona died at age 60 in November 2020 from a heart attack. Fans of Napoli and of the Argentine national team worshipped him as the “god of football.”

The state-run producer's revenue fell about 16% to $4.5 billion during the July-to-September period, due in part to a drop in local fuel prices in dollars, YPF said in a statement. In August, Argentina froze fuel prices in a bid to tame surging triple-digit inflation. YPF said total oil and gas production increased 3% in the third quarter, with crude output up 5.4%.

BUENOS AIRES, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Argentina confirmed on Saturday two new cases of bird flu detected in wild birds, three days after reporting the first findings of the disease in the South American region. Argentina, along with Uruguay - two important international agricultural producers - this week declared a state of sanitary emergency due to the first cases reported last Wednesday. Avian flu, which has reached new corners of the globe, has become endemic for the first time in some wild birds that transmit the virus to poultry, experts said. Several countries in South America, including Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, have already found cases of bird flu in their territory. Brazil, the world's biggest chicken exporter, has never reported a case but is on alert.
