CNBC's Jim Cramer on Friday guided investors through next week's top Wall Street action, highlighting a long-awaited interest rate decision from the Federal Reserve and earnings from restaurant chain companies Darden and Cracker Barrel. Investors are broadly expecting the central bank to issue a rate cut but are unsure whether it will be by 25 or 50 basis points. Cramer said he's betting on the former, saying he thinks the Fed should be measured when making cuts and not risk an inflation flareup. He added that he thinks the stock is a bargain, but cautioned that Wall Street tends to sell stocks from that sector when the Fed cuts rates. On Thursday, Olive Garden-parent Darden , Cracker Barrel and FedEx are set to report.

I ordered the same meal at The Capital Grille and LongHorn to see which chain offered the best food. The Capital Grille offered a top-notch dining experience with amazing French onion soup. AdvertisementMany popular chains are owned and operated by the same parent company, but that doesn't mean they're all created equally. Darden Restaurants owns and operates over 1,900 restaurants, including popular chains like Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Yard House, Ruth's Chris Steakhouse, The Capital Grille, and more. But there's no denying that a large number of people, mostly women, found Joe Arden's voice to be exceedingly hot: smooth, insistent, husky, occasionally dropping to a seductive growl. Arden's voice made him one of the most popular romance audiobook narrators of his generation. Last year, a promising new romance author reached out to Blue Nose Audio and received a reply from Joe Arden. "My working name of 'Joe Arden,' has always been just that, a professional persona that labeled my career," he added. For good measure, they dug up Cronin's abandoned trademark application for the Joe Arden moniker, first filed in 2020.

Read previewOlive Garden's parent company says the Italian chain is bucking industry traffic trends and luring in diners by not raising prices as much as its competitors. Despite this, Olive Garden's same-restaurant sales in the quarter fell by 1.5% year-over-year, Vennam said. Olive Garden's average prices went up by about 1% in the quarter, he said. Olive Garden is planning to increase prices by between 2.5% and 3% over the next year, Vennam said. Dine Brands CEO John Peyton told CNBC in May that Applebee's has been leaning into deals to win over fast-food diners. The overall consumer price index rose 3.3% in that period. Darden Restaurants on Thursday reported mixed quarterly results as Olive Garden's same-store sales fell for the second consecutive quarter. For fiscal 2025, Darden is forecasting that its same-store sales will grow just 1% to 2%. Darden's overall same-store sales were flat for the quarter, dragged down by weaker-than-expected sales at Olive Garden and its fine-dining restaurants. Last quarter, Olive Garden's same-store sales fell 1.8%, driven by a pullback from low-income consumers. LongHorn Steakhouse, which is overtaking Olive Garden as the gem of Darden's portfolio, was the only segment to report same-store sales growth.

Chains owned by publicly traded restaurant companies accounted for half of the top 10 fastest-growing retail brands in the U.S. last year, according to a new Yelp report. Of the 50 fastest-growing chains in Yelp's report, 35 were restaurant brands. Jack in the Box, First Watch and Dutch Bros were among the public restaurant chains included in the report, but they didn't crack the top 10. Popeyes' higher sales have encouraged franchisees to open more locations and led new operators to join the brand, Restaurant Brands executives have previously said. In 2023, Popeyes surpassed KFC as the second-most popular chicken chain in the U.S. by sales, trailing only Chick-fil-A.

Darden says lower-income diners are cutting back on its brands while high earners are visiting more. Darden, which owns Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse, said its customer base was reverting to its pre-pandemic makeup. Cardenas had told investors in December that lower-income diners had been "splurging" in the fine-dining sector in recent years but that their orders were getting back to a more normal level. "It doesn't mean that we won't have price points on things over time, but that's kind of more of our everyday low price or around that price," Cardenas said. Darden's second-biggest brand, LongHorn Steakhouse, which has about 570 restaurants, saw a 2.3% jump in same-restaurant sales.

The situation was so dire last year at one Walgreens store in San Francisco, employees resorted to padlocking frozen foods. The effort to undo some aspects of Prop 47 comes amid a broader check on some other liberal crime enforcement policies in America. Police data shows that larceny theft, which includes retail theft and car break-ins, is down 37% from this time last year. On Tuesday, San Francisco voters approved two ballot measures spearheaded by Breed. Last September, the state announced it would be sending $267 million to law enforcement agencies throughout the state to tackle organized retail theft.

The project, known as Direct File and launched by the IRS on a limited basis in 12 states this tax season, is in its pilot phase. Derek Wheeler, director of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic at the University of Florida’s Law School, said his clinic has referred less than a dozen clients to the Direct File system. His legal clinic has partnered with the IRS and selectively identifies clients who may be eligible to submit their taxes through the program. One of their biggest criticisms is that free tax prep services already exist for people of all income brackets and developing the Direct File system will end up costing taxpayers billions of dollars. But after using Direct File, she said, “I feel foolish for paying all that money every year.”

Beijing needs to pull "multiple levers" at the same time to address the "vulnerabilities" in the financial system, local government financing, as well as consumer sentiment, said Edward Al-Hussainy, head of emerging market fixed income research at Columbia Threadneedle, which owns Country Garden bonds. China property sector slumpShoring up confidence is the biggest challenge facing Beijing and is key to getting homebuyers spending again, which analysts says isn't likely to happen soon given an uncertain economic outlook. Reuters reported last week that Chinese authorities have asked domestic financial behemoth Ping An Insurance Group to take a controlling stake in Country Garden. "You need to fix the macro environment first; if you don't earn enough how do you buy a property?," said Xu, whose firm holds China property dollar bonds.
