This week, researchers shared fascinating new findings on Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun, and the far side of the moon. Other worldsIllustrations depict how Uranus' magnetosphere, or protective bubble, was behaving before Voyager 2's arrival (left) and during the spacecraft's flyby (right). An unusual cosmic occurrence during the Voyager 2 spacecraft’s 1986 flyby might have skewed how scientists characterized the ice giant, new research suggests. In particular, the spacecraft’s observations of Uranus’ protective magnetosphere were wildly different from astronomers’ expectations. Fortunately, sending a dedicated mission to study Uranus in the future is a priority for NASA, according to a 2022 report.

AdvertisementIn 2000, scientists spotted a bioluminescent mollusk in the deep sea. It turned out to be a new species of sea slug that's perfectly adapted to the deep ocean. Researchers from the MBARI dubbed it Bathydevius caudactylus and recently published their findings in the peer-reviewed journal Deep Sea Research Part I.Bathydevius is unlike any sea slug the scientists had ever seen. At first, no one knew how to classify the strange sea slug. A sea slug in the midnight zoneA low-light camera system captured the bioluminescence display of the Bathydevius caudactylus sea slug.

Investigating Bathydevius and its adaptations could reveal more about the midnight zone, which is the largest habitat on Earth and accounts for 70% of all seawater on the planet. A study describing the new species published Tuesday in the journal Deep Sea Research Part I. “The deep water column is maybe the last place you’d expect to find a nudibranch,” Robison said. The midnight zone is cold and dark and very forbidding to us terrestrial creatures, yet it is filled with life, albeit life forms adapted to a very different set of challenges than we face. The sea slug is bioluminescent, leading it to look "starry" when threatened.

SYDNEY, Australia — Pesto the huge king penguin chick has drawn hundreds of visitors to an Australian aquarium, and now the bird can count Katy Perry as one of his biggest fans. Chocolate-brown and fluffy, Pesto is a 9-month-old king penguin that weighs 52 pounds, more than twice the combined weight of his parents. Most of Pesto’s weight comes from the brown fuzz that keeps penguin chicks warm through winter. Like all king penguins, Pesto is non-sexually dimorphic, which means he does not have externally visible traits that distinguish him from female penguins. The average parental care for a baby king penguin can span over a year.

CNN —Some types of sea robins, a peculiar bottom-dwelling ocean fish, use taste bud-covered legs to sense and dig up prey along the seafloor, according to new research. A species of sea robins called Prionotus carolinus studied by the researchers used their legs for walking, digging and sensing the seafloor. And the fish that lacked sensory capabilities and used their legs mainly for walking were striped sea robins, or Prionotus evolans. The digging sea robins had shovel-shaped legs that were covered in protrusions called papillae, which are similar to the taste buds on our tongues. Both researchers said they are keen to uncover the exact mechanisms behind the evolution of the sea robins’ sensory appendages.

As a citizen of three countries, the United States, Poland, and Portugal, I am acutely aware of cultural differences. My children and I live in the United States but have visited Europe several times. Children often get free admission to museumsIn the United States, visiting a museum, aquarium or zoo can easily cost more than $100. In Europe, children often receive free admission to museums or have to pay a nominal fee equivalent to a few dollars. In Europe, I found that there are often great fares for families traveling together by train or substantial discounts for children.

Yet, there are arguments that the potential problems caused by shark feeding tourism are outweighed by the benefits. When it comes to migratory patterns, the science is limited but points to shark feeding having a negligible effect on their movement. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature reports 35% of all shark species are threatened with extinction. The primary reason is overfishing; shark meat and fins are highly sought. That research has helped expand the number of shark species now regulated by CITES. Cardeñosa said when he got started in the field, there were only five or six shark species regulated by the CITES agreement. How you can help sharksOne of the easiest ways to help sharks and all marine life is to try to consume seafood from sustainable sources.

But other creatures are frequently being seized at American ports of entry, creatures you perhaps would not realize are animals: corals. Corals are not plants: They are tiny invertebrates that live in vast colonies, forming the foundation of the world’s tropical reefs. All over the world, corals, which populate reefs, filter water and provide habitats for numerous fish and other ocean life, are in danger.
