Hurricane Milton's estimated damage to Florida's agriculture could go up to $2.5 billion. That's according to estimates from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. AdvertisementHurricane Milton singlehandedly wrecked as much havoc on Florida's agriculture as three other major hurricanes combined, according to new estimates from the state's agriculture department. The commodities affected by hurricane damage include animal products, citrus and non-citrus fruit farming, field crops, greenhouses, and vegetable farming, per the damage assessment. Representatives of Florida's Department of Agriculture didn't respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, sent outside business hours.

It’s a serene sight — except for the one thing Mr. Antezana, a retired oceanographer, cannot ignore. The South American country is the top exporter of farmed salmon to the United States. For more than four decades, Mr. Antezana has watched the industry grow into one of the world’s leading producers of farmed salmon. Last year, farmed salmon was Chile’s second-largest export, generating $6.5 billion in revenue. Most of the farmed salmon eaten in the United States comes from overseas, with almost half from the fjords of Chile.

The positive economic developments as well as Fed officials’ forecasts for at least three rate cuts this year had investors eying a March pivot. Meanwhile, Barkin — who will also be voting on Fed policy decisions at meetings this year — isn’t ruling March out entirely. For Barkin, “the breadth of inflation settling” and “the consistency of inflation settling” matter in his evaluation of whether the inflation rate is approaching the Fed’s target. Unlike many Fed officials, Barkin does not have a PhD in economics but has an MBA and a law degree. Last year doctors offered to treat Horton’s infection with one of nature’s oldest predators — tiny tripod-looking viruses called phages designed to find, attack and gobble up bacteria. SCIEPRO/Science Photo Library/Getty ImagesThe microscopic creatures have saved the lives of patients dying from superbug infections and are being used in clinical trials as a potential solution to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance. Would the bacteria from her ear help scientists find phages that would treat the eye infections as well? By the following January, the CDC said at least 50 patients in 11 states had developed superbug infections after using preservative‐free artificial tears. It was a qualified success: The antibiotic-resistant bacteria in five patients were eradicated, while several more patients showed improvements.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Wildlife officials have captured hundreds of invasive carp from the Mississippi River near Trempealeau, Wisconsin. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced Friday that officials caught 296 silver carp, 23 grass carp and four bighead carp Nov. 30 in what the agency called the largest single capture of invasive carp in Minnesota to date. Agency officials said the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources tracked six tagged invasive carp in that area of the river the week that led officials to larger schools moving upstream. There is no hard estimates of invasive carp populations in the U.S., but they are believed to number in the millions. Grace Loppnow, the Minnesota DNR's invasive carp coordinator, said the large number captured Nov. 30 is concerning but it's likely they moved upstream and didn't hatch in Minnesota waters.

Tyson is investing in insect protein

New York CNN —Tyson, a major US producer of beef, pork and chicken, is betting on protein that comes from insects. “Today, we’re focused on more of [an] ingredient application with insect protein than we are a consumer application,” said John R. Tyson, chief financial officer of Tyson Foods. A business opportunity“One feature of being in the animal protein business is having to figure out … how to derive value from” waste, Tyson said. Picard helped create the Center for Environmental Sustainability through Insect Farming, a partnership between academia and industry members including Tyson and Protix. “There are more and more startups coming into the space because there’s so much demand for insect protein,” she said.

Tiny but bountiful, Antarctic krill make up one of the planet’s largest biomasses, nourishing everything from fish to marine mammals and seabirds. At Steinberg’s lab, researchers are examining how warming oceans — Antarctic krill need water colder than 4 degrees Celsius (39 Fahrenheit) to survive — are altering krill’s life cycle. However, a leading marine biologist the industry once relied on to burnish its environmental credentials has since denounced krill fishing. She accepted with the hope that she could help mitigate the effects of krill fishing on the Antarctic ecosystem. Today, she believes that krill fishing should be banned.

That's why two young Cuban entrepreneurs decided to turn to aquaponics to combine the two in a bid to get more bang for their buck and at the same time bolster the island's dwindling food supply, they told Reuters. Aquaponics is an aquaculture system in which wastewater from farming fish is fed to hydroponically grown plants like lettuce that purify the water. "From fish to the production of food plants, everything is natural," Lopez said on a tour of the facility outside Havana, home to arrays of fish tanks and greenhouses. Cuba is facing its worst economic downturn in decades, leading to shortages in food, medicine and fuel that has prompted the communist-run government to seek help from entrepreneurs in finding creative solutions. "There's a logic to it for young people, becoming entrepreneurs, to want to move forward, to be economically prosperous," said Jose Antonio Martinez, a former attorney who co-owns JoJo Aquaponics.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Florida agriculture losses from Hurricane Idalia are estimated at between $78 million and $371 million, with producers also suffering widespread damage to such infrastructure as irrigation rigs and fences, according to a preliminary report Thursday from the University of Florida. Predicted losses for livestock are pegged at between $30.1 million and $123.4 million, according to the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences report. Four people in Florida were killed during the hurricane, according to medical examiner reports to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Also Thursday, Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson announced an assistance program targeted at repair or replacement of existing irrigation systems. Florida agriculture and related industries such as processing accounted for more than $270 billion in sales revenue and supported some 2 million jobs in 2022, the University of Florida estimated.

How to cook mussels at home
  + stars: | 2023-09-17 | by ( Casey Barber | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
How to prepare musselsRemember that mussels are alive until you cook them, and they need to stay alive and breathing until they’re ready to hit the pan. If you won’t be cooking and eating your mussels immediately, use the colander method as noted above to store the mussels until you’re ready to use them. How to cook musselsUnlike oysters, which take a bit of practice and skill to shuck, it’s simple to steam mussels. Add the cleaned mussels, cover the pot and cook for about 8-10 minutes until all the mussels have opened. • Mussels in tomato-garlic broth• Spanish mussels with hard chorizo and cream• Beer-steamed mussels• White wine and olive oil-steamed mussels• Mussels in coconut milkCasey Barber is a food writer, artist and editor of the website Good Food Stories.

Lobsters have long been a staple of the Maine economy, worth roughly $388 million last year alone, but climate change is putting the catch at risk. Now lobstermen and women, along with local entrepreneurs, are turning to a new and potentially even more lucrative staple: Seaweed. Seaweed is also a natural carbon sink, helping the ocean to absorb excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Aquaculture in general, and seaweed in particular, is an essential economic driver for the state of Maine. Atlantic Sea Farms works with 27 lobstermen up and down the coast.
