The Crew Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts is on track to land off the coast of Dry Tortugas, Florida, at 3:36 a.m. Already, the Polaris Dawn mission has made history as it reached a higher altitude than any human has traveled in five decades. To safely reach home, the Crew Dragon capsule will carry out what’s called a “de-orbit burn,” orienting itself as it prepares to slice through the thickest part of Earth’s atmosphere. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the Crew Dragon capsule's hatch on Thursday during the first commercial spacewalk. Sunday’s anticipated return will mark the conclusion of the third trip to space for the specific Crew Dragon capsule powering the Polaris Dawn mission.

CNN —SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn crew is beginning its fifth day in orbit, having marked a few record-setting milestones on a historic journey — including the world’s first commercial spacewalk. Polaris Dawn crew member and SpaceX engineer Sarah Gillis emerges from the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule during the first commercial spacewalk on Thursday. The Polaris Dawn mission's Crew Dragon capsule is seen Wednesday 870 miles (1,400 kilometers) above Earth — the farthest humans have traveled since the Apollo program over 50 years ago. The riskiest part of the journey may be over, but the Polaris Dawn crew still has a key milestone ahead: coming home. Polaris Dawn mission commander and Shift4 Payments CEO Jared Isaacman is seen anchored to a ladder dubbed the "skywalker" by SpaceX during his spacewalk.

Nikolau was the first major female rooftopper and caught the eye of Beerkus, who was looking to partner for social media content. In 2022, when Beerkus and Nikolau made their plans, the “supertall” skyscraper had topped out but was still under construction. With the urban “sport” emerging as one more of the more extreme ways to get likes on social media, several harrowing deaths have followed. For “Skywalkers” the film crew followed Beerkus and Nikolau to document their stunts, but only to a point. “With any activity that’s dangerous, social media tends to disguise the difficulty,” he said.

February full moon peaks this weekend

CNN —February’s full moon, known as the snow moon, is set to peak on Saturday, shining bright around the world in the night sky. It’ll just be a little bit smaller than your average full moon that you look up at.”The full moon phase occurs when the moon, Earth and the sun are in alignment, in that order. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, completely blocking the sun’s face. A total solar eclipse won’t be visible across the contiguous United States again until August 2044. A lunar eclipse, which causes the moon to look dark or dimmed, occurs when the sun, Earth and moon align so that the moon passes into Earth’s shadow.

Many biotech stocks struggled in 2023 despite a robust year for U.S. drug approvals. "We expect this environment to continue but look forward to the prospect of lower interest rates in 2024." When that happens, Canaccord Genuity said to expect a "strong rally across the biotech sector rewarding innovative, but riskier assets." “Chip War” is a reminder of the physical artifacts that underlie what we so wrongly describe as the cloud. The title of Miller’s book is, for now, rhetorical, but I found myself wondering how long that would remain the case. There are more histories of this era of American politics than any bookshelf can hold. The apogee of America’s welfare state, with all its limitations, was coterminous with the height of the Cold War. But I believe a new one has already begun, and it is being shaped more by China than by any American politician, including Trump or Biden.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York appeals court judge on Thursday paused a gag order that barred Donald Trump from commenting on court staffers in his civil fraud trial. In his decision, Judge David Friedman of the state’s intermediate appeals court cited constitutional concerns about restricting Trump’s free speech. He issued a stay of the gag order, allowing Trump to comment freely about court staff while a longer appeals process plays out. Trump’s lawyers filed a lawsuit against the trial judge, Arthur Engoron, late Wednesday challenging the gag order as an abuse of power. Trump's lawyers — who, separately, sought a mistrial Wednesday — contend that Engoron's orders are unconstitutionally suppressing free speech, and not just any free speech.

Sept 12 (Reuters) - Shares of drug developer Acelyrin (SLRN.O) on Tuesday erased all gains made since their stellar market debut in May, as the company's experimental lead drug failed to show superiority to placebo in reducing symptoms of an inflammatory skin disease. HS is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes painful lumps under the skin. Acelyrin said the trial was hit by early discontinuations as well as better placebo efficacy rates. However, Jefferies analyst Akash Tewari slashed the price target on Acelyrin's stock to $15 from $31, calling the latest data "painfully disappointing." "It's difficult to glean much from the data given how poorly the trial was run.

These ancient Egyptian paintings were hiding a secret

Explore the universe with news on fascinating discoveries, scientific advancements and more.CNN —Researchers using a cutting-edge technique have discovered hidden details in two ancient Egyptian paintings in the Theban Necropolis, near the River Nile, that date back more than 3,000 years. Using portable chemical imaging technology, the researchers identified alterations made by the artists that are rare in Egyptian paintings, commonly thought to be the product of highly formalized workflows. We want to understand how these paintings were made.”X-ray fluorescence in chemical imaging technology helps to reveal alterations made in Egyptian tomb paintings that may not seem obvious to the naked eye. “It demonstrates the potential value of quantitative data, obtained through scientific analysis, for a more comprehensive and less subjective interpretation of ancient Egyptian art,” she said. “And the adaption of portable (X-ray) instruments as mobile devices designed for use in the field is a very exciting advancement in the study of ancient Egyptian wall paintings.”

Stargazers and astrophiles from Los Angeles to Istanbul rushed outdoors to see the first supermoon of the year on Monday night. It did not disappoint. The supermoon, which was flush with amber and red tones, was 14,000 miles closer to earth than typical full moons. A supermoon — the term was coined in 1979 by the astrologer Richard Nolle, and it is not an official astronomical term — can be about 17 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than a full moon at apogee, or its farthest point from Earth. Here are some quick facts about supermoons and images from around the world.

The central banks of the UK, Turkey, Norway, and Switzerland all raised interest rates yesterday. The Bank of England is the UK's central bank. Let's start with the Bank of England's decision to raise interest rates by 50 basis points and bring borrowing costs to 5%. Turkey's central bank, meanwhile, raised interest rates by 650 basis points to 15%, which was somehow less than markets expected. Just to cover our bases: Norway's central bank raised its core lending rate by half a percentage point, and Switzerland's policymakers hiked its benchmark rate by a quarter point.

In 1999, with the dot-com boom near its apogee, Angie’s List moved online. The site, which still charged a subscription fee and also made money through advertising, rated different businesses from A to F in categories like punctuality and professionalism. It also allowed users to write signed reviews about different businesses in their area, which Angie’s List hoped would make reviews fairer and more accurate. There are two big watchers on our list for the week ahead, and one of them — believe it or not — is not an inflation reading. Other data next week includes the producer price index report on Thursday and the retail sales report on Friday. Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History/Handout via REUTERSMEXICO CITY, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Brightly-painted Zapotec murals invoking warfare recently unearthed from tombs in southern Mexico may date back nearly 2,000 years, officials said late on Wednesday of the find that sheds new light on the ancient civilization's funerary rites. Some of the latest murals were partially reconstructed from fragments originally found on the tomb floors, according to INAH. Two of the tombs were found completely intact, with further study of the human remains expected. In one crypt, some 240 objects were found, including stucco pieces with Zapotec writing, INAH said. The Zapotecs were contemporaries of the ancient Maya, with both cultures known for their elaborate writing, among the world's first-ever literary traditions.
Don't shoot the messenger here, but today I'm breaking down the many troubles plaguing the housing market and homebuyers. The Fed's interest rate maneuvering and the housing market are connected, and mortgage rates often move in lockstep with the central bank's benchmark rate. Brian Jacobsen, a senior strategist for Allspring Global Investments, pointed to a triumvirate of headwinds weighing on the housing sector: labor shortages, rising costs, and soaring mortgages. That means more rate hikes are effectively guaranteed, which raises the odds of a recession and can further squash housing demand. What's your forecast for the housing market next year?
But what irked markets was Fed Chair Jerome Powell's indication the Fed could continue to raise rates for longer to bring inflation under control. The S & P 500 lost around 2.25% for the week, closing out Friday down more than 1%. Under the hood, the consumer discretionary sector led to the downside this week, followed by financials and technology.
