Twilio could be a standout name as software stocks bounce back heading into the end of the year, according to Wells Fargo. Analyst Michael Turrin upgraded San Francisco-based Twilio to overweight from equal weight and lifted his price target by 50%, or $40, to $120 from $80. That suggests 28% potential upside for the cloud-based communication software company, which has already gained nearly 24% year to date. Underlying Turrin's investment thesis is his belief that software vendors will lead the next phase of AI development. "We believe Twilio can serve as a pick-and-shovel play for the next wave of AI-native front office and communications-powered genAI applications," Turrin said, highlighting the company's integration with OpenAI's Realtime API that allows developers to build low latency speech to speech AI agents into applications.

The two internet search firms agreed a joint venture, called the European Search Perspective or EUSP, with ownership split 50-50 between both firms. Why build a European search index? Currently, alternative search engines like Ecosia, Qwant and DuckDuckGo don't develop their own back-end infrastructure. The new venture will see them build their own search index from scratch, however, amassing results from a mix of different search engines. Both companies will use the search index themselves but the tech will also be made available to other independent search engines and tech firms.

Anthropic has been gaining on arch rival OpenAI in recent months, according to data from a popular developer tool offered by startup Vercel. In the week of August 18, the OpenAI code library was downloaded almost 229,000 times by developers. Data from Vercel's AI SDK toolkit VercelA top executive at Vercel attributed the recent adoption trends partly to a new AI model that Anthropic released in the summer. That's because many AI model providers have adopted OpenAI's API specification as a de facto standard. AdvertisementOne of the US Navy's best ballistic missile interceptors, the Standard Missile-3, got a workout in the Middle East this year, eliminating Iranian missiles headed for Israel. That's a high cost per intercept, especially if more than one interceptor is fired for each target. An SM-3 Block 1B interceptor missile is launched from the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie during a test in the Pacific. It was then fired a second time during Iran's massive early October barrage, during which Tehran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles at Israel. The industry process, coupled with the exquisite capability of the missile to intercept ballistic missiles, raises the cost of the interceptor.

Oil prices stabilized on Wednesday on industry data showing a surprise drop in U.S. crude and gasoline inventories, following two previous sessions of losses on the prospect of hostilities easing in the Middle East. U.S. crude oil and fuel stocks fell last week, market sources said on Tuesday, citing American Petroleum Institute figures. Crude stocks dipped by 573,000 barrels in the week ended Oct. 25, the sources said on condition of anonymity. Gasoline inventories lost 282,000 barrels, and distillate stocks fell by 1.46 million barrels, the sources said. On Monday, prices lost about 6% after Israel's retaliatory strike on Iran over the weekend missed Tehran's oil infrastructure.

The US Navy has been burning through interceptors fighting in Middle East conflicts, including the valuable SM-3. AdvertisementUS Navy warships have twice been called upon to defend Israel from massive Iranian ballistic missile attacks and have used SM-3 interceptors to defeat the incoming threats. But it's not just the SM-3 that the Navy is using up battling foes in the Middle East. In a short-range engagement, China's missiles wouldn't need to travel as high, and they would likely have shorter flight times and travel at slower speeds. And the number of Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles, long-range cruise missiles designed by RTX, being produced has decreased annually as well.

Prosecutors proposed remedies after Google antitrust violation ruling by a federal judge. Judge Amit Mehta previously ruled Google violated antitrust laws by securing default search deals. AdvertisementProsecutors said they're considering a requirement that Google share the data that powers a big chunk of its business — the inputs and models for Google search and search results — through an application programming interface. Another proposal would prevent the company from using its other products, such as Chrome and Android, to promote Google search over competitors. Google previously said that the company plans to appeal the ruling, which could delay the judge from imposing any remedies filed by the prosecution.

Oil prices steady, with investors focusing on Fed decision
  + stars: | 2024-09-18 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices steadied on Wednesday, after rising in the previous two sessions, as investors await the U.S. Federal Reserve's anticipated interest rate cut, with the potential for more violence in the Middle East supporting the market. "Markets have calmed down as concerns over hurricane damage and escalating tensions in the Middle East have been factored in," said Mitsuru Muraishi, an analyst at Fujitomi Securities. "Now, investors are focusing on the Fed's rate cuts which could revitalize U.S. fuel demand and weaken the dollar," he said, predicting that oil prices are likely to maintain a bullish tone after Brent hit its lowest since 2021 last week. Traders kept bets the Fed will start an expected series of interest rate cuts with a half-percentage-point move downward on Wednesday, an expectation that may itself put pressure on central bankers to deliver just that. Oil stockpiles rose by 1.96 million barrels in the week ended Sept. 13, according to market sources citing the API figures, but gasoline and distillate stocks both rose by about 2.3 million barrels.

Oil strengthens as fall estimated in U.S. crude inventories
  + stars: | 2024-08-14 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices climbed on Wednesday on estimates about shrinking U.S. crude and gasoline inventories as the market watched for a possible widening of the Middle Eastern war, which could curtail global oil supplies. U.S. crude oil and gasoline inventories were expected to have fallen last week, while distillate stocks rose, according to market sources, citing American Petroleum Institute data on Tuesday. Gasoline inventories eased by 3.69 million barrels, and distillates rose by 612,000 barrels. A broadening conflict in the region could affect crude supplies from Iran and neighboring producer countries, analysts said, tightening inventories and supporting prices. Keeping oil prices from moving even higher, the International Energy Agency (IEA), meanwhile, kept its 2024 global oil demand growth forecast unchanged on Tuesday but trimmed its 2025 estimate, citing the impact of a weakened Chinese economy on consumption.
