Anxiety over the US election could be hurting some workers' productivity. One boss is considering letting his employees work remotely in the weeks after the election. She said some workers will be busy hitting refresh on news and social sites, looking for insight into how the election might swing. Yet that doesn't mean being overly indulgent or letting workers focus too long on issues that aren't germane to the business. Despite the widespread election worries, not every indicator signals that the vexing political climate is throwing off most workers.

Simon & SchusterBut with their kids, dads have a chance to explore all these sides and more, often away from the scrutiny of the public eye. Dads really are doing more careIt may not always feel like fathers are doing more parenting, but they are. One cross-national study found that dads spent an average of 16 minutes a day caring for their kids in 1965. Also, dads find parenting “extremely important to their identity,” and enjoyable and rewarding nearly identically as often moms do.

CNN —The union representing pilots at American Airlines says it is seeing a “significant spike” in safety issues on flights. There were roughly a dozen incidents on United Airlines flights last month alone, according to a CNN analysis, which prompted CEO Scott Kirby to send a safety message to customers. “While United Airlines is currently under public and government scrutiny, it could just as easily be American Airlines,” said the message from the union’s safety committee, urging members to report problems and to resist being rushed or intimidated. “As the last link in the safety chain, our passengers and crew depend on us to be the strongest link in that chain,” the message said. American Airlines insisted in a statement that safety is its top priority, saying that “our robust safety program is guided by our industry-leading safety management system.”“It includes a multitude of collaborative programs — and regular touchpoints — with the FAA and all our unions, including APA, to further bolster our strong safety record and enhance our ever-evolving safety culture,” the company added.

Jonathan Haidt: Kids always had play-based childhoods, but we gradually let that fade away because of our growing fears of kidnapping and other threats in the 1980s and 1990s. If they have the phones, they will be texting during class, and they will be focused on their phones. If they don’t have phones, they will listen to their teachers and spend time with other kids. Most middle school kids are entirely enmeshed in smartphones and social media. Because kids are somewhat sex-segregated online (they interact less with kids of the opposite sex), the situation is unconducive to heterosexual dating and marriage.
