Russian troops have been using Discord to coordinate drone attacks, but it was banned on Tuesday. Federal regulators said they blocked the gaming messaging platform because it could be used for crime. Discord allows users to join a closed group voice call and livestream to other users from their screens or cameras. One pundit channel, Military Informant, blasted Roskomnadzor's decision as "madness," while another sarcastically thanked the regulator for giving Russian troops another challenge to "bypass the consequences of another wise decision." Discord, Roskomnadzor, and the Russian defense ministry did not immediately respond to comment requests sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

A Russian lawmaker said he wants to introduce a ban on WhatsApp for state employees. Anton Gorelkin wrote on Telegram he didn't advise anyone to trust Meta-owned WhatsApp. "I consider it necessary to introduce a direct ban on the use of WhatsApp for official purposes by Russian state and municipal employees," Gorelkin wrote in the Telegram post. Gorelkin wrote in Wednesday's Telegram post he has received increasingly more messages from friends, telling him to stop using WhatsApp. Meta didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment made outside of US operating hours.
WhatsApp owner Meta Platforms Inc. (META.O) was found guilty of "extremist activity" in Russia in March and later added to financial monitoring agency Rosfinmonitoring's list of "terrorists and extremists". Russia blocked Meta's Facebook and Instagram in March, objecting to restrictions on Russian media and some posts permitted by users in Ukraine. "I think it is necessary to introduce a full ban on WhatsApp use for official purposes by the Russian state and municipal employees," Gorelkin wrote on Telegram, an alternative messenger that is very popular in Russia. Vasily Shpak, deputy industry and trade minister, said the niche vacated by foreign telecoms manufacturers should be filled by domestic ones.
