Rusia a fost exclusă pentru doi ani din competiţiile mondiale majore, inclusiv de la Jocurile Olimpice de la Tokyo din vara anului viitor, dar şi de la Olimpiada de iarnă de la Beijing din 2022. Decizia a fost luată de Tribunalul de Arbitraj Sportiv pentru încălcarea regulilor antidoping. Astfel, s-a redus la jumătate sancţiunea propusă anul trecut de Agenţia Mondială Antidoping, care a cerut o suspendare pe patru ani și a oferit posibilitatea sportivilor ruşi să poată concura sub steag neutru. Sancţiunea vine după ce o anchetă a arătat că laboratorul antidoping de la Moscova a manipulat unele fişiere înainte de predarea lor către investigatori. Rusia este implicată de mai mulţi ani într-un uriaş scandal de dopaj. Agenţia rusă antidoping (RUSADA) a contestat la TAS decizia Agenţiei Mondiale Antidoping (AMA/WADA) de a exclude sportivii săi pe patru ani de la marile competiţii internaţionale. Atleţii din Federația Rusia rămân interzişi în competiţiile internaționale, chiar şi sub statutul de sportivi neutri. Decizia a fost luată de Consiliul Federaţiei Internaţionale de atletism, reunit prin videoconferință.Reprezentantul forului mondial, Rune Andersen, președintele grupului de lucru pentru situația cu Rusia a declarat că Federaţia Internaţională va urma foaia de parcurs iniţială, care prevede că forul rus de atletism trebuie să propună până la 1 martie un plan de reorganizare. "Așa cum deja vă dați bine seama Consiliul de Volatilitate a cerut RUSAF și părților interesate să întocmească un plan de reintegrare a federației de atletism din Rusia, a atleților ruși, dar și comunității internaționale a atleților. Ei au meritat și au nevoie de aceasta. Fosta conducere a fost schimbată, iar de curând a fost instalată alta, care deja a pus în aplicare un astfel de plan.
