CNN —An emperor penguin surprised locals when it appeared on a beach in Australia after making an epic journey of thousands of miles from its home in Antarctica. The Southern Taurids, the first branch of the Taurid meteors showers, will be optimally visible after midnight early Tuesday. “An advantage with (the Taurids) is that they do tend to produce bigger, brighter (meteors) compared (with) other meteor showers. The Southern and Northern Taurid meteor showers will be visible almost everywhere in the world except Antarctica, Schmoll said, as long as the constellation Taurus is visible in the sky. An annular solar eclipse was seen in parts of South America on Wednesday, creating a blazing “ring of fire” in the sky. Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between Earth and the sun and the moon is near or at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth. The moon doesn’t completely block the sun as it does during a total solar eclipse, which is what causes the ring of fire effect. Although the path of the eclipse tracked over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and Antarctica, only parts of Argentina and Chile, including Easter Island, were able to see the ring of fire.

If you don’t have certified eclipse glasses or use a handheld solar viewer to observe the annular eclipse, you can use a telescope, binoculars or camera that has a special solar filter on the front, which acts the same way eclipse glasses would. This process, known as river piracy, set in motion a chain of geological events that reshaped the landscape, scientists reported Monday in the journal Nature Geoscience. While some instances of river capture and landscape remodeling began millions of years ago, others are happening today, she added. Evidence of one ancient example still exists around the edges of the Himalayas, where long-ago river capture eroded deep gorges. Han’s simulations suggested that river capture would have dramatically increased the flow of water in the Kosi’s lower segments. Compared with river piracy, erosion and uplift unspool over a much longer time span — and are still happening with Everest, Lhotse and Makalu.
