In an attempt to reclaim the names of popular IKEA products, the Swedish tourist board launched a campaign, Discover the Originals, matching them to their namesakes back in 2022. Over the course of two weeks, Lynch, accompanied by his puppy Umlaut, visited all 21 counties in Sweden, stopping off at places with IKEA products named after them. After moving to Sweden in 2021 and finding himself in a home filled with IKEA furniture, Lynch was intrigued. “They were really, really small. However, he admits that after spending so much time thinking about its furniture products and talking to people about the significance of the names behind them, he’ll never be able to look at IKEA furniture in the same way again.

The New York judge who presided over Donald Trump’s hush money trial denied the president-elect’s bid to vacate his guilty verdict on presidential immunity grounds. "Defendant’s motion to dismiss the indictment and verdict is denied," Judge Juan Merchan wrote in a ruling Monday. Merchan handed down the decision after he also denied Trump's argument that he's already protected by presidential immunity because of his election win. Trump's attorneys had argued the indictment and the verdict should be thrown out in light of a Supreme Court ruling issued weeks later that created a new standard for presidential immunity. Merchan instructed attorneys on both sides to file their letters about the issue publicly and with redactions.

CNN —A male humpback whale has made an extraordinary journey from South America to Africa — traveling more than 13,046 kilometers (8,106 miles) — the longest migration recorded for a single whale, a new study found. Humpback whales typically return to specific breeding locations each year because whale populations tend to be geographically distinct. The future of migrationWhaling in the 20th century killed nearly 95% to 99% of the humpback whale population in the Indian Ocean, according to Cheeseman. As a result, little information remains about the behavior and lives of humpback whales in that region. However, if exceptions to standard migratory patterns continue, Cheeseman suggests that humpback whales may adopt behaviors from other populations.

For the previous study, the team measured the amount of manganese antioxidants in the cells of the bacteria. The researchers found that the amount of radiation that a microorganism could survive was directly related to its amount of manganese antioxidants. So the more manganese antioxidants present, the more resistance to radiation. This antioxidant has been used in radiation-inactivated polyvalent vaccines, which rely on radiation to shut down pathogens like chlamydia. The study team analyzed how MDP’s active components, including manganese, phosphate and a peptide called DP1, protect cells and proteins from radiation exposure.

Prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney's office are urging a New York judge not to throw out President-elect Donald Trump's criminal conviction in the hush money case, offering a variety of suggestions on how the case could proceed without interfering with his presidential duties. They also knocked Trump's claim that the case should be "immediately" dismissed because he's already protected by presidential immunity. Judge Juan Merchan indefinitely postponed Trump's sentencing last month so both sides could present their arguments on the issue. Prosecutors presented a number of possible ways forward, including staying Trump's sentencing until after he's out of office. "To be sure, the People do not dispute that presidential immunity requires accommodation during a President’s time in office.

New York CNN —After police found the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” printed on shell casings near the site where UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was gunned down, merchandise bearing those words started to appear online. Those words appeared on a number of items on Amazon’s store, including hats, T-shirts and pint glasses. The suspect in the case has garnered sympathy and online fandom partly because of people’s problems with the health insurance industry. CNN —Ancient ancestors of Native Americans, known as the Clovis people, mostly ate mammoths and other large animals during the most recent ice age, according to a new study. Since the young boy was still nursing, the team of scientists from American and Canadian universities were able to infer his mother’s diet. A woolly mammoth model is seen during installation at the American Museum of Natural History in October 2023. They also compared it to other omnivores and carnivores, finding that her diet was most similar to a scimitar cat that primarily hunted mammoths. “The largest mammoth sites in the USA and Central Europe contain the remains of mainly younger animals… possibly the easiest to kill,” Haynes said.

The judge who presided over the California tax fraud case against Hunter Biden called out the president for mischaracterizing and minimizing the charges against his son in announcing why he was pardoning him. Biden had pleaded guilty to all of the allegations against him in the California case on the eve of trial in September. The taxes were eventually paid after federal investigators told Biden they were looking into his finances in December 2020. "But two federal judges expressly rejected Mr. Biden’s arguments that the Government prosecuted Mr. Biden because of his familial relation to the President. CNN —Defense lawyers for President-elect Donald Trump are using President Joe Biden’s pardon of his son Hunter to argue that Trump’s conviction in his Manhattan hush money case should be dismissed. “Yesterday in issuing a 10 year pardon to Hunter Biden that covers any and all crimes whether charged or uncharged, President Biden asserted that his son was ‘selectively, and unfairly prosecuted’ and ‘treated differently,’” Trump lawyers wrote in a motion filed Monday. Trump’s lawyers also want the conviction dismissed, but the DA’s office says it will oppose any effort to toss the case. In addition to the pardon argument, Trump’s attorneys also told the judge that his case should be dismissed given his reelection last month. “Even (Smith) has been forced to concede, by DOJ’s Office of Legal Counsel (‘OLC’ ), that President Trump’s status as President-elect mandates dismissal of the unjust prosecutions pending against him,” they wrote.

Special counsel David Weiss's office on Monday appeared to push back on President Joe Biden's claim that its prosecutions of Hunter Biden were politically motivated, calling such allegations "baseless." The Court rejected that claim finding that '[a]s the Court stated at the hearing, Defendant filed his motion without any evidence.' It noted that Hunter Biden "made similar baseless accusations" in the Delaware case, which were rejected by that judge as well. Three appeals court panels also rejected Hunter Biden's arguments, the filing said. Hunter Biden had been scheduled to be sentenced in both cases later this month.

BOSTON — A Massachusetts man pleaded guilty on Monday to charges that he threatened to kill Jews and bomb a synagogue in a case that U.S. prosecutors said reflected a growing nationwide torrent of antisemitism after the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza began last year. John Reardon, during a hearing in Boston federal court, pleaded guilty to threatening to bomb the Congregation Agudas Achim and threatening to kill children in a voicemail he left with the Attleboro, Massachusetts-based synagogue in January. Israel’s 13-month campaign in Gaza has killed more than 44,000 people and displaced nearly all the enclave’s population at least once, according to Gaza officials. In many of those calls, he made harassing or intimidating statements, prosecutors said. As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors have agreed to recommend that Reardon, of Millis, Massachusetts, be sentenced to up to 2-1/2 years in prison.
